November 20, 2007 UK residents: please give feedback about the advertising-poweded Download! Client, and win a Nokia E65 Posted by Tommi at 11:04 AM | Categories: Nokia Beta Labs

I'm sure you have tried the built-in Download! Client (or "Catalogs") on your phone. If you don't know what I'm talking about, it's the Nokia application that enables you to buy apps and content directly from your phone. Right now, we are experimenting with an advertising-supported business model, and thinking about how to include advertising to the Download! Client. In the best case, everyone would win: more discounted/free applications for you, a good targeted-advertising channel for the advertisers, and more money for the developers and our beloved shareholders.

Please help us figure out the right concept!!

We just launched the first beta version of advertising-powered Download! client under Beta Labs. The focus of this initial pilot is the UK, and the advertising links will not work yet in other countries. To encourage you to send feedback, we arranged a little competition: UK people are eligible for a prize draw to win a beautiful new Nokia E65. Yay!!! Of course, non-UK people are welcome to send their comments too - we'd love to hear your thoughts.

Compatibility:
- Download! Java application: available now for Nokia 6300, 5610, 5310, 7900, 6500 Classic, 6500 Slide.
- Download! for S60 3rd Edition: coming very soon.

Download here. Go and play around with it, and give your feedback and enter the competition

Deadline for the competition = 20 December 2007.

Update: comments thread closed. Nokia Beta Labs blog and all related discussions have been moved to http://betalabs.nokia.com/blog.

Ill have to wait for the 3rd ed. installation file. Java is painfully slow

Hi Tommi,

It says on the Download page that it is compatible with the N95 and that its a sisx file, but when I try to install it I get an "update error" message.

Does the original download app have to be uninstalled first?

It works pretty well, but the feedback form doesn't give any space to give generic usage feedback, only about the adverts.

The details display for an app could be displayed a little better, perhaps a full-screen details page would be better than the 'dialog' type display.

The price is not displayed as a price... '0' is displayed, without a currency sign and without the currency format (ie 0.00). If the price is 0 though, you could also replace it with 'Free' which would look a little nicer.

It might also be nice if you could choose to see a screenshot of the app or go to the product's web page to find out more information, as it's quite difficult to see (for new apps) if it's an app you'd actually want to install... For instance, there are 2 WiFi apps (Boingo and Easy WiFi) and it's impossible to see which one looks nicer without looking them up online or installing both.

Oh, the last comment box was supposed to be about open feedback - maybe we should have had a bit more explicit.

I'll change the question from "Your feedback: ..." to "Other comments: ...".

Thanks Duncan.
