« Beta Labs blog moved to http://betalabs.nokia.com/blog | Main | Official Google Mobile Blog (announcing Google Maps for Mobile update) »
Forum Nokia just released Nokia Energy Profiler, intended to help 3rd party developers to test and monitor (and improve) their application’s power consumption in real time in the target device. I proposed last month, inside Nokia, that we should release this under Beta Labs too. We decided not to go for it, however, because the app is clearly developer-focused, while Beta Labs is consumer-focused.
Yet, I wonder: are 3rd party application developers really motivated to measure and improve their power consumption? After all, if the battery runs out quickly, Nokia gets the blame - not the developer. But what if power users and loud-voiced bloggers started using this app, increasingly giving public pressure for the developers of applications that prove to be the worst power-hogs?
I wonder.
Update: I'm not talking about 3rd party apps only, but also about apps by Nokia and our partners.
Update: you can contact the Energy Profiler team directly by sending email to energyprofiler (at) nokia (dot) com. The team is interested in how to improve usability, fixing possible bugs, and your unexpected observations about power consumption in different circumstances.
Note: for Nokia Beta Labs specific discussions, visit Nokia Beta Labs blog.

I for one am all up for using this kind of a tool. I understand the problems with power consumption on a mobile device and want to create as efficient applications as possible. So this utility is very welcome. Must try it soon!
Posted by: Symbiatch | November 28, 2007 05:40 PMThis is very neat. Direct access to the measurements would be even fancier, so that one could instrument his own application to track exactly the amount of energy spent on different operations (of course, assuming that only one operation is being performed at a time...).
I must say seeing amount of power drawn by GPS in comparison to idle is enlightening, and measuring further details probably makes it quite a bit easier to estimate what kind of optimizations make the best sense for applications to make using them minimal hassle while reducing power drain, probably quite considerably. But getting all that would really be easier if one could instrument this to code being analyzed.
Posted by: kirma | November 28, 2007 05:54 PMPoint taken, I'll try to explore a bit and start using this in any app reviews that I do over on Symbian-Guru.com.
It would be cool to have this for RAM usage, as well, or perhaps even added, so that both RAM and battery plotted on the same graph.
Posted by: Ricky CaddenHey, I find this program very useful, but for some reason it suddenly closes on my nokia n95 8gb. Before I get a chance to save the data... quite annoying, any ideas?
Posted by: Helge | November 28, 2007 07:24 PMThis could be a very useful application for common users as well. I think lots of people would be interested to find out which applications use the most of their battery power and how can they increase the battery life.
Too bad this is 3rd edition Feature Pack only :(
Posted by: Jaro | November 28, 2007 09:45 PMWell I tend to notice when a newly installed application has an adverse effect on my battery life. It would be nice to have this tool available to the "Power User" community though.
I would think that peer review and/or public pressure would have much more of an effect on a software development studio that just about any other source of feedback. If we are able to point to hard numbers, which this tool would provide, it means even more.
I hope to see this tool available on Beta Labs soon.

Posted by: Tommi Vilkamo | November 29, 2007 11:14 AM@Tommi: I sincerely hope E90 developers are aware of this: E90 seems to have *huge* power consumption when the lid is open, even if screen blanking has kicked in! My measurements give 0.29 Watts for external screen active, 0.09 W when it's blanked, but 0.60 W (no surprise here) and 0.29 W (!) respectively for lid open (naturally, internal display being used then). All of these while displaying the "ready screen" with no background activity.
To say the least, this surprises me; I wouldn't have expected blanked, open phone consuming over thrice the power in comparison to when it's closed. I doubt if I'm the only one that likes to have the phone open on the table, checking it occassionally... I hope something could be done to fix this.
The firmware in use is 07.40.1.2, hardware RA-6, Nokia E90 (02).
Posted by: kirma | November 29, 2007 11:39 AMGreat little app, very useful. When developing potentially power hungry applications this will come in handy, hopefully making it possible to optimize the apps from a power perspective.
On a general note, are they any specs/data available for Nokia phones (on a per-model basis, preferably) on power consumption/battery life in different usage scenarios?
Posted by: Göran | November 30, 2007 03:31 PMI have a feeling there isn't, but maybe someone can prove me wrong...
@Göran: I doubt that, but http://www.forum.nokia.com/main/resources/development_process/power_management/ has tips. Some practical details regarding performance implications of data transfer are discussed in "Recommendations for Reducing Power Consumption of Always-on Applications" article there, but details are still rather scarce. I doubt if handset-specific details would even help that much - many of them really depend on network conditions among others.
Anyway, maybe people could collect rule-of-thumb measurements on the Forum Nokia Wiki...
Posted by: kirma | November 30, 2007 04:41 PMThank you for the nice feedback. An idea has been that there would be active discussion forum eg. in Forum Nokia. Additionally we could build a .jce (trace file) and screenshot website. People could share their interesting findings and learn how to make battery last longer. Graphs are also pretty - one needs to have some fun, too.
What do you think about this?

Hello its a pitty it does not support S60 3.0 FP0...
I wonder why?
Posted by: Aron | December 3, 2007 06:09 PMTo Aron: The reason is that S60 3.0 devices do not have the chipset firmware that supports correct real-time measurements in Symbian side.

I use both an e70 and n95. will the next firmware update for the e70 support these correct real-time measurements? and when would such firmware be made available?

Hi, I am impressed with this power profiler, but I cannot use this on my Nokia E61, becuase it is not based on Release-1.
Is there a way I get a version of POWER PROFILER that will run on Nokia E61 phones ?

I find this tool very very interresting as a user also (i'm no developer) but I can't get it stable on my N82. It crashes very often and very early after starting monitoring. And even worse: When I have the monitoring running and I connect the external power adapter, the phone completely resets itself. That makes the tool completely useless.
Will there be a new version which fixes this (i've read in this thread this problem is ? Or is there another tool that also makes it visible how much power the phone is consuming?
Feel free to mail me on gnoise_@t_gmail.com.

Posted by: toshiba battery | May 6, 2008 05:08 AMI tested this camera for a client. I didn’t have the light running for more than 15 minutes. The battery lasted approximately 6 hours before recharging. The LCD, however, had a few dead pixels - never saw this before. Tried returning for exchange and had to put up quite a fight. Anyone else seen this? http://www.batteryfast.co.uk
thank you very much for good write

Posted by: Free Online Currency Converter | June 28, 2008 10:43 AMCan anyone tell me what the average power consumption is, in Watts, when taking a picture? This info would be useful to me when relating some energy usage to staff.
