QR code creation added for Nokia Mobile Codes beta

Nokia Beta Labs - October 10th, 2007 - Written by Tommi Vilkamo

Quick note: Nokia Mobile Codes beta adds support for creating QR codes, in addition to Data Matrix.

I believe these two are the main alternatives to emerge as de-facto standards for 2D barcodes. Nokia barcode reader is able to read both.

Bonus links: Data Matrix and QR Code on Wikipedia.

Glad to see it’s still an active project. I’ve always preferred QR Codes, they stand out a lot more than Data Matrix barcodes, without those keying boxes a 2D barcode just looks like a bunch of dots to me :o)

Cool! The option could be a little more visible?

I prefer QR code only because thats what I’ve been using for all this time. :)

Please join us at CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment 2007, as many in the mobile industry are anticipating the imminent announcement and launch of NeoMedia’s newly developed NeoReader application. Based off the award winning Lavasphere technology developed in Germany by Gavitec, the NeoReader reads all common non-proprietary 2D codes (Data Matrix, QR, Aztec, Maxi) as well as URL embedded 2D codes, and all 1D UPC open source codes. This allows the NeoReader to function as a universal code reader and allows the user to click on a variety of codes with a single application installed.

By utilizing NeoMedia’s NeoReader technology, camera phones are instantly transformed into universal code readers that can read UPC barcodes and two-dimensional smartcodes simply by clicking with their installed camera phone application. Users connect directly to the mobile Internet without URLs or manually entered links. The NeoReader ushers in and inaugurates a brand new era of innovative mobile enterprise and optical code reading solutions for the wireless industry.

Cool! I have to try 2D bar codes on my web sites. It might be the most simple way for visitors to store the published links to mobile phones.

I don’t know which one of the de-facto standards I should choose. May be it does not even matter for a simple link sharing..

streetstylz: Like I’ve commented you numerous times, where is the NeoReader for free download? Advertising a good solution is OK once it’s actually available.

    Jukka,

The NeoReader will be on full display at this month’s CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment in San Francisco, California.

NeoMedia Technologies will be very visible at speaker events on the 22nd, including the Smartphone Summit and Mobile Entertainment Summit. At NeoMedia’s booth, 1351, there will be live demos of the EXIO for mobile ticketing and couponing, the NeoReader, and company professionals to meet with.

    Hope to see you there.

Ok, thanks. Let us know when the reader is available for a S60 device.

It’s great to see the QR support on the writer side, but I would definitely second a greater emphasis on making the reader app available on more devices. Currently it’s only N93, N93i, N95, E90, N80.

I can’t for the life of me understand why other E-Series devices (such as the popular E65) are not on that list.

  10. Duncan Sample wrote

@Leo you can install the application onto other S60v3 devices (including E-series) but the lack of an auto-focus/macro lens means that it’s not very able to get a good image of the barcode.

There are stick-on lenses that you can buy that might help though.

    Thanks Duncan !
I will give it a try - I was going by the list of supported devices on the site and I actually tried to install it a while ago on an E65 which did not work - but that might have been a previous version.

    Cheers,

    Leo

On my E70 I was able to install the Nokia reader, Kaywa Reader and UpCode. For me the Kaywa Reader was the most successful reader but that was a little while ago.

@streetstylz - So… what’s all the fuss about? It’s Qode, which has been out for quite a while. Is there something revolutionary or are you recycling the same old software?

  15. brewskih wrote

Its basically recycling the same old software, which has been rebranded three times now with very little success, as well as the multiple launches have produced little success to date.

However the Paperclick, I mean Qode, I mean NEOREADER is now supposed to support the open standards as well to read Data matrix and QR codes, which the QODE reader was unable to do. The NEOREADER was built on Gavitecs Lavasphere technology, thus making Neomedias reader obsolete technically, so Neomedia really has nothing to show for all the years of developing their paperclick reader. They sure are lucky they were able to hold on to Gavitec for the time being, or they wouldnt have much of a reader at all.

Duncan et.al. - has anybody got the Nokia Reader to install on an E65. If yes - where would I be able to get the installer.

I would just like to compare the readers and I am aware of the downside such as no autofocus …

I recently tried Kaywa, Upcode, and I-nigma on my N81, and I found i-nigma to work nearly instanteously, even faster than the Nokia Barcode Reader does on my N95. I’d suggest that one personally.

  18. Jukka Eklund wrote

@ricky: i-nigma is really good, and it’s available as a free download whereas Nokia’s reader isn’t. However your comparison might be unfair since you didn’t have the Nokia reader on N81. Fixed-focus will always be faster because there is no delay in focusing the picture.

All, I’lll check once again if the Nokia reader could be made available as a download.
