April 02, 2007 Top-10 suggestions for S60 phonebook Posted by Tommi at 04:10 PM | Categories: Nokia S60 applications

The head honcho of our S60 phonebook future development asked me to summarize your feedback here, here and here to the question "How would you revamp the phonebook? ...or would you?"

Here's what I replied:

From: Vilkamo Tommi
Sent: 2. huhtikuuta 2007 12:32
To: head honcho of S60 phonebook future development
Subject: RE: Public feedback on "How would you revamp the phonebook?"

Top-10 suggestions:
- Utilizing the screen estate better, and showing more info
- Integration with other apps (Maps, Logs, IM, Local search, Calendar, ...)
- Smarter search (search with T9, partial name, number, …)
- Easily accessed Top-lists (the contacts you call/SMS the most)
- Improve speed (especially when 1000+ contacts)
- Online/service backend (e.g. searchable contacts database, backup/restore, ...)
- Presence (in Jaiku style + availability in IM networks)
- Better synch with PC/Outlook/Mac
- Setting default numbers for phonecalls and SMS
- Sharing info between contacts (e.g. physical address, landline number, ...)

+1: Benchmark Jaiku, iPhone, DreamConnect, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Palm Treo, OS X, LaunchBar...

There are dozens of good suggestions that didn't fit into that top-10 list. For a complete story, please read through all the ~70 comments. I think it's worth it.

Thanks everybody!

Tommi, the 9th item, aka setting defaults for phone call and sms is already integrated in the phonebook, though hard to find.
Go to contacts, choose a contact and open it (WITHOUT CLICKING ON EDIT, just open it like you want to view it).
Now choose options and scroll down, you'll find Defaults. Click and there you'll be able to set defaults for Phone number, Video call number, Test msg number, MMS number, email adress and PTT adress.

Now for example, if you want to call someone, just by clicking the green call button while the name is highlighted in Contacts, your phone calls the Default Phone Number.
And if you set your message writing to take letters instead of numbers in the "To:" box, you can just write the first letters of a name and then click the center button (or just the down button, to write the message text) then write the message and send it. It will be sent to the default Text Message Number.

I know how nagging you feel when everytime you sent a message to "Mr X" you get asked to choose which number to send to.
I have been using this for such a long time, I didn't know people ignored its existence, though you have to admit that Defaults is burried deep down in the viewing mode of a Contact, and not in Editing, which is plain absurd.

Hope this was what you were asking for.

Rita: that was exactly it!

But if not even the early adopters are aware of this, I think we should make it easier. Say, asking "save as default?" question the first time you choose the SMS/call number.

Interesting, that's actually one of the things I love MOST about the phonebook - how it handles multiple numbers.

I love the little pop-up box that gives me the option. It's incredibly handy, and allows me to easily select how I want to get in touch.

However, I also use Rita's tip on typing in a portion of the name when sending a text, and I LOVE that S60 knows that you don't send a text to a non-mobile number, and puts the mobile numbers as the primary by default.

I hope you made/will make it clear that item 2 must mean "open APIs for integrating ANYTHING into the phonebook", otherwise I'm quite sure it'll be one of those "ok, we'll support X and Y and everyone will be happy" things that we see too much nowadays.

Extensibility is key in this and all apps that come with the system. And I wouldn't be at all sad if there was an API to change the whole phonebook/messaging/notebook/etc with another implementation. So it would be really nice if these weren't hardcoded but plugins of a sort and S60 had a settings view from which to select the desired plugin to be used.

Tommi, did you check out the phonebook on S60 3rd Ed, FP2? I think there are some significant improvements there, and it looks a bit different.

Posted by: Jukka Eklund | April 3, 2007 12:26 PM

To Rita and Tommi:
yes, default numbers do exist, but problem is that you have to manually select it for every single contact, especially when a person has more than one mobile. Added "bonus" is that when you transfer Contacts via Data transfer application, all default SMS/MMS/Video numbers are "lost", and you have to set it up all again from scratch, not to mention caller groups, as well.
BTW, you can also type a first few numbers of "Company" field as well, when you send SMS. You can put a dot "." in Company field for that one specific person, and when you send SMS, just put . as a recipient :-)

-Set a graphic in a group
-Set a Video to a group
-Black list - Messages + Calls + E-mails
-Change icon fast and easy in edit mode at contact as S40 phones (e.g. From Phone (Home) to Business)
-Option how to view Contacts; like "Contact with Number" - see S40 phones
-Fonts (select diffirent sizes)
-Contacts info to show how much numbers,e-mails... we have in PhoneBook
-Sim Contacts TAB - except the 2 defaults(names/groups)
-Lock option
-2 Categories - Prof. Phbook and Everyday Phbook
-Search by number and e-mail too, not only by name

Well, in my country (Lebanon) the default mobile numbers start with 03- (and recently with 70- too) and I would love to be able to set the mobile so it automatically sets numbers starting by 03- or 70- as default mobile and default sms numbers. Would be awesome.

One more change, is more visibility like in s40, as PanosM said:
Imagine being able to see just names in the phonebook, but when u highlight a certain contact, a line appears beneath it with the default number (without needing to click on it, in order to open it) the when u scroll left and right, you toggle between the info about this specific contact. Then when u move up/down the line disappears and reappears beneath the new highlighted name. It's an integrated view mode without needing to open a view mode itself. I think it's a great way of presenting the phonebook.

One more thing, to Tommi, I am not an early s60 adopter, the first s60 phone I bought was 3250 (before i had an s40 device). But I guess I handle my phone so often (even in the toilet, I know you have a thing for mobile usage in the toilet) I end up finding these things I was looking for.

Posted by: Rita Khoury | April 3, 2007 09:08 PM

Sounds good Tommi!

I think there may be a bit of confusion regarding the defaults. The problem I and (unless I misunderstood) others were trying to point out is that it would be nice if sensible default numbers were automatically set. For example, if a new contact is added with 2 numbers - one landline and one mobile - then Contacts could automatically make the mobile number the defaut for SMS. My guess is that in most cases that's the number a user would want to send texts to, so automating this saves them the time of manually setting it as the default or having to go through an extra number selection every time they send that contact a text.

If a user doesn't like the auto-assigned defaults they can always override them via the existing method of manually setting them.

Please check tis out too:
When i'm putting a number in "TO" field(Messaging) from Contacts show me what number is the default(the chosen for calling) (in that case i don't have to put to all the names a default number for sms(except call) because then it won't let me change it in SMS editor if i want to)

any update to the address book is great... however, before any update should be done, can somebody at nokia 1st resolve the 1st name, last name bug 1st...

i just want to receive my txt mesages and i want to see where it came from as being displayed first name, last name and not last name, first name...

Posted by: friedbrains | April 5, 2007 08:29 PM

Rita! You rock... as Tommi mentioned us old timer S60 users didn't even know about the darn default number setting for voice, text, etc..

Posted by: Nick P | April 6, 2007 12:44 AM

My opinon: throw the Phonebook far away (e65)

When I start to write to find eg. Karlsson
I get every Karl, Kalle So I need to push the buttons less if I dial the number...

Why I have options Lastname Firstname /Lastname, firstname / Firstname Lastname
the phonebook search does not seem to care

What use I have with all other info, if one can search them only thru search app. that is behind 5+ clicks

E is real Bisphone
Autolock 5€
Office upg 40€
Antivirus 40€
a Web brower that shuts down when page is allmost loaded Priceless

But free extra: 3-4 navigation/ loaction /landmark options in menus? or is it just 1 software? Can not tell. Need a gps dingledongle before it works---

One more idea:

You could think a bit of the ICE practice. This means storing a contact to be used "In Case of Emergency" (see, for instance http://www.eastanglianambulance.com/content/news/newsdetail.asp?newsID=646104183). I'm sure you'll be surprised of how many people have an ICE contact in their phones. However, the phone book could be improved to actually support the feature. And it is spreading.

My issue with this is the redundant numbers issue. If I have the same number stored under "Mom" and "ICE", my phone can't show me the caller ID when my mom calls me - obviously, because it can't tell which one of the stored contacts to show.

Sure, I was able to work around this by storing the contact only once, as "ICE Mom" or, with some other contacts, store ICE2 or ICE3 as a given name and then "Name Surname" as the surname. However, when I need to share that contact information with someone, I first need to edit the info - as that person might not be the ICE contact for others. It also makes finding the people from the contact list more difficult. And anyway, I would prefer to have the contact information in order and avoid this kind of hacks.

So, one proposal would be to allow tagging people as ICE contacts. And to ignore that field when the contact information is shared.

In any case, the main point of having this information easily accessible (by just selecting the address book and typing 4-4-4, possibly followed by 2-2-2) is key. So I'm definately not proposing any Nokia-spesific solutions.

I'd like to easily see what group(s) the contact belongs to. Sometimes a group it's the only thing which distinguishes two contacts, like when you know only the name. It's a bit complicated to select a contact, select the menu, traverse to "belongs to", see the list. Ugly.

Or perhaps there is a setting which'd allow me to see it, like "name display"? If there is one, please be kind enough to tell me.

Hello,
Is there any way to get knowledge of PhoneBook default name for CContactNamedRemoteView?

I'm writing application that have Contacts view part.
Using standard "Name" will greatly improve application startup user experience ( although I create my own sort view after startup).

P.S. Hope someone read this post :)
Any way to get Tommy email? lol

How about Linux compatibility – or, better Linux compatibility? Linux is really going to only grow more and more, especially since software is becoming increasingly expensive. Microsoft has announced that it will no longer sell XP, and that it will also no longer create any new updates for XP unless they are major (security issues etc.) and that those releases won't be long. For one, I find VISTA too expensive and I don't own a MAC. So, I've started using Ubuntu-- it gives me what I need, works well, and costs me absolutely zero (well, except for download stuff etc.)

Smarter search is very important. Also CPU is very important. Cause lots of mobile devices are coming with slow cpus and generally they are not enough for users.

If you are only looking for what the lead users want, then why try to avoid a herd mentality in the first place? best way to figure out what the herd wants is to follow where the herd is going. trying to parse results further than that will only fracture your efforts.
