« What kind of S60 developer blog would you be interested in? | Main | New blog: Business 2Go »
After the long, cold, and dark Finnish winter, sun is finally shining, and it's time to start the jogging season. And just in time for us S60 users, Nokia Research Center has released their wonderful Nokia Sports Tracker application. For free, of course.
Wohoo!!
Now, off you go to buy a GPS module - they are quite cheap now - and try it.
What do you think about the app? As always, drop your thoughts, and I'll make sure the developers hear your feedback directly.

I've heard rumours about the program.. How about lapping, does it work automatically, or do you need to push a button to make program understand that new lap started?
Posted by: Jasmo | March 15, 2007 12:44 PMAnother thing is who want to carry phone when jogging/running? Anyway, with that price worth of trying.

I do, when I run alone. It's surprisingly nice to bury your mind into music or interesting podcasts while your body is doing something else.
Posted by: Tommi Vilkamo | March 15, 2007 01:05 PMIf need only music/radio, I prefer Sony Walkman stick. Quite big difference in weight, especially if running 20~35km at a time.
Posted by: JJ | March 15, 2007 01:40 PMI don't think I can jog with my Nokia N93 and a GPS receiver. So much extra weight. This is where an ipod nano actually somes in handy (w/ the nikeplus kit).
Posted by: Mark Guim | March 15, 2007 05:24 PMThe Nokia 5500 is very light and durable, if you're looking for a phone or smartphone to jog with. And as it has a built-in accelerometer/pedometer you don't need the GPS unit either.
It also has a pedometer-based Nokia Fitness application which does everything that this GPS app does, both on the phone and on your PC.

Posted by: Carlos | March 16, 2007 01:07 AMAnother tool that the we Urban Sport Guerrilleros
can hack :)
One of my Guerrilleros has made an ipod/nike
software to upload his exercises up to endorphinum.
I guess it won't take long at the same will happen to this neat tool. Nokia Rocks!
Greetings,
Carlos
This is an amazing application. I've used it for a few runs now and it's not cumbersome at all. I have the E61 and the GPS module in one hand as I run. Not a problem at all!
This is exactly the right way to go Nokia. As GPS will become as common as Bluetooth over the next few years this application just broadens the usage of your cell phone.
I was going to buy a Garmin Foreunner 305 but the Nokia Sports Tracker and my E61 + BT GPS module provides the same benefit - and it saved me $300!!!
Posted by: Ed | March 16, 2007 05:56 AMCheers
The idea is nice but the software is very techy and my phone way to heavy and big for a long run. i'll stick with my nano and the nike attachment.
Posted by: Marc | March 16, 2007 08:57 AMLooks like nowadays the people are so week that they can't even lift and hold a mobile more than a few minutes.
Posted by: Riho | March 16, 2007 01:14 PMTake it as an extra to exercise (some people jog with extra weights added to arms and legs)
Yeah, I used to play basketball with ankle weights tied down. It makes an amazing difference to your strength.
Anyway, back on topic, how safe would this be with a hard disk based device; say the N91?
Boom
Posted by: akBoom | March 16, 2007 04:12 PMWhat I miss is a bluetooth "pulse rate" device.
Posted by: Stoffel | March 22, 2007 11:35 AMOf course this should be attachable to this "Sports Tracker" application....
Tried using this for a couple of runs, using the Nokia LD-3W GPS pod. Turns out the accuracy of the GPS unit is too low. The s/w would have to do some averaging, to smooth the jaggy path I seem to have taken. In particular the vertical path shows me jumping +/- tens of meters up and down.
Posted by: Peter | March 27, 2007 12:33 AMWould be nice if the s/w would integrate with two other apps Nokia provides: Wellness Diary and Maps. Both have somewhat overlapping functionality, but enough difference to make the union even better.
