smart2go and Mobile Search

Wohoo! The beta version of Smart2go application a.k.a Nokia Maps is finally available for download. As far as I understood, it’s the same as the built-in one in N95. For other devices, you need a bluetooth GPS module to make full use of the app, but you can do the basic stuff even without one. Go try it! What do you think about this application?
Oh, and the updated version of Nokia Mobile Search app is also available, including the ability to search for stuff stored on your device. Unfortunately, I had some problems with installing this app to my Nokia N73 (I’m suspecting that upgrading built-in apps might be trickier than thought). Does it work for you properly?

The maps app is in its early age I think ;my E61 exits from maps soooo often, that I returned to my route 66 software.
If this app is on the hyped N95, sorry guys, I’ll save the 600 euros for a decent GPS-PDA system.
My kind regrets for the Nokia GPS team…
Tommi,
The mobile search is good, though I don’t use it much I have it installed. I’m glad they combined the two search things, it makes more sense to search EVERYTHING with one app.
Smart2Go is on my N73 now, right next to TomTom. I’ll be doing a comparison of the two shortly. I’ll probably spring for a week subscription to Smart2Go.
Initial Thoughts:
The Google Earth-like startup and zooming is freakin cool. One of the few times I’ve just said, “wow” to a mobile app. Got a bit hung up trying to download the map while I was flying down the freeway at 70mph, but tonite I’m going to download a whole map so its a better comparison to TomTom.
Overall, it’s feelin good.
works great with my E61 and holux gpslim236.
i hope that tele atlas and navteq will soon update their maps of bulgaria.
Sorry to clog up your comments section, Tommi, but you know what I just realized? Being that they’re both Nokia apps and all, shouldn’t both Mobile Search and Maps automatically be loaded into EVERY S60’s Download! catalog? For EVERY region? I think this is the perfect opportunity to start a new trend…..
The smart2go download page lists only E61, E70, N73, N80 and N93. However, the download link seems to be the same, no matter what the selected device is: http://fpa.smart2go.com/free_downloads/smart2go_beta_S60.SIS .
Would anyone have a guess why not all S60 3rd edition devices are officially supported? The application installs file on my E50, although usage is perhaps a bit sluggish since the phone does not have 3G.
To the Nokia GPS/MAPS team (if someone is reading)
Maps: desinstallation took 5 minutes and didn’t finished as yet…
————
Rebooted the E61, now everything is a mess in app manager, can’t remove Maps and cannot re-install again.
I was afraid of hard format but seems that’s the one and only option.
I have successfully updated Mobile Search on my N73, but all my localplugins were deleted in the process. Is there any way to get them back? I miss Yell.com…
> shouldn’t both Mobile Search and Maps automatically
> be loaded into EVERY S60’s Download! catalog?
Oh. Let me ask.
On my e62, the first version of search didn’t work at all. Just flashed the screen and then back to the menu. This version starts up, but hangs at the globe and magnifying glass and doesn’t to anything.
Paul: exactly the same thing happens with me. I’ll let people know asap. Anyone else with similar problems?
I’ve had the same problem in the past with the startup. Trying turning the phone off and back on and see if that fixes it.
Search didn’t play nice with my E61 at first. I tried to intall it to phone memory and every time I tried to start it I got “System Error”. Reinstalling the program or rebooting phone didn’t have any influence. Once I installed it on the memory card everything has worked just fine!
The one thing that bothers me a lot in Search is that it finds absolutely nothing from my Mail for Exchange inbox. Corporate email is the thing where I need searching capabilities most and it just doesn’t work. Another mail boxes, pop/imap, work ok. Tommi, could you pass this feature request to anybody that might be able to help in this problem? …it may be the same thing with other push-email systems (Blackberry connect, Roadsync, Intellisync) also.
=)juha
Horia, it’s in beta right?
BTW, guess what’s the mapping software in Nokia 6110 Navigator
Hey Beta, i knew that, but this app is too Beta:-).
now 1hour lost to reinstall everything, coz, you know all of you, backup from PC SUITE works bad. And thats not a beta.:-)
I’ve downloaded both apps on my E60 with last updates avaliable(2.0618.06.05).
Search (version for Bulgaria) works somehow, but it’s annoying that every time at start it asks for connection. Local search works only when you enable internet connections. It’s very strange. I think old local search is much better.
Maps work fine for beta. It’s very slow at some zoom levels but this is maybe due to increasing details shown. It’s interesting for me whther localized maps will be provaided as it difficult for to search Bulgarian names transliterated (unknown how) to english alphabet.
Tommi, why does Nokia insist that your phone be connected while you download stuff from them? I’ve given more information on my blog post, but I’m doing the Texas map, 104MB, and it’s taken already over an hour and it’s only 30% downloaded. It’s lucky I have a card reader built-into my laptop or else my phone would be sitting here in Offline mode, missing calls/emails/sms for hours. It’s the same situation with NSU, why must we be connected in order to download?
http://symbianguru.typepad.com/welcome/2007/02/nokia_doesnt_li.html
I’ve been sitting here for almost 3 hours waiting for my download to finish.
Hi,
We are planning to deliver Maps and Mobile Search also through Download!, but first we want to ensure that the consumer experience is good enough. Maps is currently in Beta version and it’s quite a big download through cellular network. The plan is to deliver the final maps version through Download! once it becomes available.
Thanks for the idea!
I’ve install the Smart2Go software, and I like it a lot. It’s brilliant to finally see it :o)
I have, however found a down-side to it, which I’m going to ask the Smart2Go team about… adding your own POIs. I have lots of POIs from pocketgpsworld.com and other sites (and some hand-made lists) which I would like to have available, but I can’t find anywhere that says whether it’s possible. I would ideally like to be able to warn when I’m getting close to some POIs too.
I’ll put a review on my blog at some point, maybe this evening about it all.
Maps seems to work okay for me, but if I install all the Finnish maps via the MapLoader it is still missing whole sections of the country, but now it won’t download anything from the net any more! Only way to get it to work is to wipe all maps and let it fetch them as needed.
@Toni Takomo,
Would this be a problem for different regions since at the moment some apps available in Download! aren’t always available.
@Duncan Sample:
smart2go integrates with the phone’s native “Landmarks” application, so all the landmarks you have added to the phone through other applications and also manually are directly accessible in smart2go. Nokia also has a XML-based landmarks exchange format http://forum.nokia.com/info/sw.nokia.com/id/9001c8de-c19e-41a0-87d3-5be4297e4d4c/S60_Platform_Landmarks_Exchange_Specification_v1_0_en.pdf.html that enables importing of landmarks to the phone’s Landmark store over different bearers such as http, MMS and SMS.
@Ricky Cadden and Jody:
I have found the MapLoader suboptimal and slow, too. Like Jody, I also found the downloaded Finnish maps incomplete. I tried downloading the Finnish maps twice, with different areas missing each time. So it seems to be some kind of server overload.
Monitoring network traffic while the MapLoader download was progressing, I found it downloading lots of small files instead of a complete archive file. Presumably MapLoader makes the same http requests as the smart2go application itself when it it streaming data as you use the application. MapLoader downloads one small file, writes it on the phones memory card, downloads the next small file, etc… that’s why the whole process is so slow and that’s why it is possible that some areas are left missing although the download was supposedly “completed”.
I like smart2go a lot. Having the option to use it offline is great.
And it’s really nice to see it’s using the integrated location APIs. This way I can use it together with e.g. a GPS logger (wich also uses the internal API like the one made by me
… ) at the same time. All other solutions I tested up to now used the bluetooth gps receiver directly which is a bad thing if the phone supports the location api.
Great!
Does anyone know how the first shown position is determined?
In my case it pointed to my house but I was 100km away (and the GPS turned off … ). So I guess it was the last know position.
But someone over at my-symbian - forums stated that he had the same experience but doesn’t even own a GPS unit. That’s weird.
@Björn Quentin
It uses the last known postion to zoom in on startup. If there us no last known position it stays at world zoom level.
Tommi, Jukka,
This application will never work on an N91.
I have a 2 month old N91-2; could you please ask someone around at Nokia if they’re ever going to release a new FW. Because in this state the N91-2 can only be used for calls, sms & music. You can clieck some pictures but can’t view them in the gallery
unless you’re ready to wait for 5 minutes for the gallery to open. Oh and if you’ve used any memory hungry app like the OSS browser once, you can’t see the pictures in your gallery unless you reboot.
Basically, this phone is a joke, I’m wondering how was it ever released, how did it pass through SW quality control? I don’t have 650 USD to throw around, anyone have an idea on how to get a refund on this phone?
I’m not angry or upset, it’s just becoming a laughing matter in the circle I hang out, we all get together and have a good laugh trying to open the gallery or browse the web.
Boom
I downloaded it into my E70 and impressed - they have even Estonia included and I could plan a route from my house to my summer cottage. Nice
Got the Texas map loaded up, and a 7-day license for the US. This weekend I’ll be doing some driving around with my N73, LD-1W, TomTom, Maps, and a video camera. Will post the comparison on Monday.
Thus far I like it. There’s a few small annoyances, but these can easily be fixed with a future release. I like the UI integration, as well as the tight contact usage.
Hi,
I like smart2go, and I like my N73.
But does anyboy know how you prevent a N73 to go to screensaver mode while it simulates a route?
Doesn’t seem to work on N80.
@Ingmar:
You can go to settings->general->screensaver. Set it to “always on”. But don’t forget to set it back if you want to save your battery.
ak, how is ‘N91-2′ different than “normal” N91? Of course there will updates to software, but if you are really fed up with it you should just return it to the shop?
A few of the changes that made me get the N91-2…
8GB HDD
A2DP
OSS browser in ROM
Black colour
Unfortunately returning it is not an option; I got it from Singapore. And even if I do go back to the Nokia shop at Singapore they’re never going to refund the money. I’ll probably just sell it. You can’t understand the frustration of using a broken device unless you’ve used one yourself (after having paid good money for it).
Boom
i tried to download this over wifi with my N80 - but it says the instalation is no supported by my device! (sucks).
will it make a difference if i try via PC Suite?
….it taken 3 hours to download the UK maps and now I’m not happy. this also means that because of Nokia’s typically poor implementation of good ideas I cannot use my phone for phone calls as it’s in ‘Mass storage mode’.
Well, I don´t understand why people are so necative about this application and downloading? - Yes, it takes some time but it´s still beta- i´m sure it´s gone get better…and if you´re have to use the phone while downloading - use a card reader.
MAT
I paid to download the only available english language city guide for Valencia, Spain. I was shocked at how poor it was and how it didn’t integrate well with the rest of the smart2go service. Not that it mattered as the city guide just wasn’t usable anyway…
The worst aspect was the lack of any usable details/POIs for many crucial tourist and/or business places/businesses. Choose ‘CULTURE’ and there’s just two places listed! Choose ‘NIGHT’ and there’s just ONE bar listed (and no clubs). I could go on but then this post already contains more information than this sorry excuse for a city guide.
Nokia really need to know what these 3rd party vendors are offering before they allow them anywhere near the smart2go service. I paid over £5 (€8/$10) for this and I’m absolutely disgusted. I was expecting something of the quality level of TomTom’s Citymaps or the smart2go Wcities guides, not this!
Come on Nokia, we expect more of you (especially when some of us are unpaid ambassadors for the company!)
I cannot get the MapLoader program to install. I have tried from both Nokia.com and smart2go.com. Is anybody else having same problem? Solution?
Best regards,
Jeppe
I think you need Microsoft .NET runtimes !
If you want to minimize the phone’s offline time when downloading maps via MapLoader you can use a USB memory stick.
The whole procedure is explained on my site:
http://www.mobile-j.de
But the easiest way is still to use a card reader.
@Duncan Sample: The landmarks thing works so far. But it seems unable to handle a lot of landmarks so we have to keep the number of POI small.
If you want to import OV2 or ASC formated POI have a look at my site:
http://www.mobile-j.de/snipsnap/space/Products/POIXpress
This application can also export landmarks in some other formats.
@Sebastian: It seems that the XML-based landmarks exchange format by Nokia depends on the presence of the native landmarks application. So e.g. on my 3250 the send waypoints stuff is not working. (And so the LMX import.) (Well the 3250 isn’t officially supported by smart2go so it’s okay … I really like smart2go anyway.)
tried download map on my e61i. download finished ok but when i started smart2go app, it says ‘no maps found’. where did the map i just downloaded go? i found a cachedat.cdt file in the CITY folder of the smart2go maploader directory in my pc. transferred this file to city folder in my phone but still message ‘no maps found’. can someone please help me on how to make use of these downloaded maps? thanks a lot.

i can’t find this on your site.
Bert,
the full URL is:

Hope it’s useful for you.
bjorn,
sorry to bother you, but can you identify which folder the maps go to? i tried downloading some maps successfully to my e61i phone, but when i open smart2go application, only the world map shows. when i try to go to other location, it say’s no maps available. thank you for your time.
btw, thsnks for responding tho i can’t see my posts on this blog. i don’t know why?
bert
oops…i see my posts at the bottom only when i preview my posts. strange.
@Bert: The files are found in the folder “\Private\20001f63\diskcache\” and then they are split across several directories named like “0\0″,”1\0″,”1\1″ etc.
Hope it helps.
