February 16, 2007 My new toys Posted by Tommi at 01:55 PM | Categories: Devices

Jukka Eklund, the original S60 Multimedia blogger, heard me begging gadgets and sent me a little gift:

gadgets.PNG

From left: my afternoon snack, Nokia 6110 Navigator, N75, N76 (with my nose reflecting from the mirror), and N95.

Thank you Jukka!!

Heh, LazyWeb seemed to work this time. But I'll try to get officially into the proto loop asap, so that we can have more enlightened discussions about the latest S60 devices in the future.

Anything you would like to know about these particular devices?

Tommi,
Could you please shoot some pictures with the N95, so I can see how well its autofocus/5MP still camera works in real life? I like my N80's camera, but its photos seem soft/slightly out of focus much of the time, particularly indoors.

Also, could you shoot a very short video indoors to see whether there is less video noise than there is on the N80?

I have been thinking about upgrading to an N95 (aargh! I only got my N80 6 months ago), but I want to make sure that the differences are significant enough to make it worthwhile.

I'd also be interested in your trying VOIP on these phones and reporting back your experiences.

Posted by: brucery [TypeKey Profile Page] | February 16, 2007 03:13 PM

@brucery

I guess that all those devices (with perhaps the exception of the N95) are pre-production prototypes with beta firmware.

So while it would be fun to hear about Tommi's experiences with those devices, nothing definite can be said about them with regard to performance and quality.

Congrats Tommi! Lol looks like someone is gonna have a busy weekend playing with new toys.

Posted by: Darla | February 16, 2007 04:21 PM

Which version of
1) Symbian OS
2) S60
3) ARM processor
they have?

Do they have RealPlayer? What multimedia formats they support and what resolutions?

Posted by: fabrizio | February 16, 2007 04:45 PM

Tommi, I have a question. Is the N75 unbranded? If so, can you look at the label on the back and give me the 7-digit product code, so that when Cingular FINALLY gets this phone out the door, i can unbrand it so it's actually usable?

Posted by: Ricky Cadden [TypeKey Profile Page] | February 16, 2007 04:49 PM

Can I beg too? ;) eheeh

have a nice weekend and play a lot with them!

Posted by: Alexandre Silva | February 16, 2007 05:24 PM

It would be interesting to understand their battery life in the real world. I have an N80 and as long as I don't touch it the battery will last two days. If I actually use it, maybe a day.
Luckily I'm not a heavy user anymore otherwise it would have gone back a long time ago. oh for my 6210.
Also do any of they use mini-USB ports for data or charging - so much better than Pop-Ports.
Enjoy playing.

sebastian, all: all of those are obviously protos (as in prototypes) and the software is not final, since none of those are selling yet. So let's not go the *** (you can guess the site name here) way and review them as final.

But all of them are "feature complete" in both HW and SW point-of-view so features can be discussed.

Posted by: Jukka Eklund | February 16, 2007 06:08 PM

were the bananas included in the package or do they come as an accessory?

Posted by: Diego | February 16, 2007 06:44 PM

Is it true that 3rd party applications can`t use gps in gps enabled smartphones? Or application only need JSR properly configured (like mgmaps can)?

Posted by: panariga | February 16, 2007 06:45 PM

Tommi,
Can you please comment (in a few days of course) the battery lives for N76 and N95?
Thank you.

Jukka,
The ****site you mentioned was THE LAST one to write about the 3GSM Nokia launches. Their anti-Nokia attitude is more than visible.

Nice weekend for all of you!

Posted by: Horia | February 16, 2007 07:26 PM

Congrats, Tommi, on these new toys!

Thank you for asking about what we'd like to know about these devices. :-) My question is similar to Horia's: I am wondering how N95 battery life compares to the N73.

Posted by: karen [TypeKey Profile Page] | February 16, 2007 11:11 PM

Congrats on new toys indeed!

I have the exact same two questions as 'brycery' (comment #1).

Posted by: Christopher | February 17, 2007 01:47 AM

Lol @ Diego!

Posted by: Darla | February 17, 2007 03:24 AM

Hi all, I wouldn't draw definite conclusions yet about the battery lifetimes since these are proto units and not final. Anyhow, my experience with N95 so far is that charging might be needed every other day.

But let me ask a question: is it an issue? All of these devices will last long enough during the day so it's not a problem to charge during night etc.

@panariga: it's totally false and it would be insane to prevent that. It's just that 3rd party apps don't use the new location APIs (since S60 3rd Edition) but they try to locate the GPS device through Bluetooth. Once they just rely on the location APIs then the app doesn't need to care which device is providing the location data (internal GPS, external GPS, network location etc.)

Posted by: Jukka Eklund | February 17, 2007 07:40 PM

Hi Jukka,

Nobody draw conclusions, as yet:-).Plenty of time for that.
We, as very very curious early-adopters, want to know how are battery lives for these new devices.

Or Tommi when was wrong when he...ummm..."Anything you would like to know about these particular devices?"

Posted by: horia | February 17, 2007 08:24 PM

BTW, the specifications for devices can be found right here on s60.com: http://s60.com/life/s60phones/browseDevices.do

and more at Forum Nokia:

Posted by: Jukka Eklund | February 18, 2007 09:20 AM

On the N95, does it have continuous autofocus video?

Posted by: Dr Tran | February 19, 2007 05:35 AM

"Anyhow, my experience with N95 so far is that charging might be needed every other day.

But let me ask a question: is it an issue? All of these devices will last long enough during the day so it's not a problem to charge during night etc."

Exactly how I feel - I am happy to charge every night, as long as I get a full (long!) day of power use out of it. So can you tell me roughly how much you are using the N95 in order to charge it every day? And are you using any of Wi-fi, GPS, 3.5G etc?

Posted by: Mark V | February 19, 2007 09:43 AM

Is the banana a toy, too? :|

Great blog

Posted by: PieroBo | February 19, 2007 06:06 PM

@Mark, all: I really don't want to say more since there are just too many 'unknowns in the equation' to make my experiences useful for anybody.

Customers should be able take a "test drive" of couple of days, to see how it feels. Of course it would help if the manufacturer offered some rough figures about battery performance with GPS, Wifi etc. but I also think those figures might be totally useless in the real world (just like the traditional talk time figures have become it seems).

Posted by: Jukka Eklund | February 19, 2007 07:23 PM

I have only one question: how much should I beg and to whom to get those for testing too? ;)

Posted by: Symbiatch | February 20, 2007 08:52 AM

@Jukka: I have had a N80 IE for a few months and at first, I was a bit surprised that I have to charge it every day (well, maybe more like every 1.5 days).

I personally don't think it's an issue and if you consider all the radios (GSM, 3G, BT and WiFi) plus the killer screen, it's really no wonder the battery drains quickly.

Besides, I have discovered that turning off 3G will about triple the time I get on a charge.

Hey Tommi,

I need ur suggestion on upgrading my SEK750i, kinda confused between a N80 & N73. I really like the N80s looks, but if you could throw some light on the specs between both these phones i would really appreciate it . Looking forward to your reply.

Cheers!!!

Posted by: kritikesh | February 23, 2007 02:04 PM

kritikesh: Frankly, these two devices are quite similar. N80 has WLAN, but I think N73 is better in many touchy-feely ways.

I chose N73. I'd gladly recommend it, unless you want WLAN.

Can you listen to music while using the sat nav

Thanks

Posted by: B-Fly | February 26, 2007 11:50 AM

> hey wen is the n76 gooing to be released?

Dunno. Quite soon, I would assume.

> Does it have flight mode

Yup, although we call it "offline mode"

> Can you listen to music while using the sat nav

Yup.

Posted by: Tommi Vilkamo | February 26, 2007 02:43 PM

On the N95 can you re organise your contacts via a first name basis?

Does the GPS navigation have extra charges on usage?

Can you edit Word or Excell docs?

How does it perform when running multiple applications? eg playing music while videoing?

Posted by: Myles | March 7, 2007 06:48 PM

can you let me know when the N95 will be available?
Also, what is the weight of the phone and the thickness?
Thanks.

Posted by: Amy | March 8, 2007 06:46 PM

Tommi,

As you may know, I've recently come into possession of a Nokia N75 (completely legally, I might add. :)) and I was wondering if you could post the firmware revision that yours has?

If you have time to discuss this one more in-depth, also, please email me.

Posted by: Ricky Cadden [TypeKey Profile Page] | March 12, 2007 11:27 PM

Hello Tommie

I've had the N80 for a couple of days but returned it to the store because of the battery.
The biggest problem was not really the battery life itself, but the fact that the at the end of a (not really heavy usage) day the indicator gave 3 blocks, but then suddenly gave up totally during a short telephone call. Completly empty. No restart possible. Extremely frustrating for a €700,- phone. Wlan, 3G, GPS en what else more is very nice, but in my opinion there should be an option for an automatic shutdown of al the extra connectivity to make sure that there's always enough power to make important phonecalls... which is what a phone is meant for in the first place isn't it?

Posted by: Jaro | March 18, 2007 11:02 AM

@Gavyn: I have been given the Australian pricing on the GPS. If you are happy to use the GPS with only the maps it is free but if you require voice directions to go with the maps it will be $2-$3 each use or $130 for 3 years.

The main thing I would like to see added to all these handsets is Hot Swap for the sim card, it would make life alot easier.

Posted by: Craig | April 11, 2007 06:12 AM

Question: Can you make a ringtone a mp3 file on the phone itself or on the memory card?
