Spot a video caller

General - November 16th, 2006 - Written by Tommi Vilkamo

Carlo from Mobhappy spots an emerging trend: Okay, So That’s Three Times People Have Used Video Calls…

Back in August, Martin noticed two otherwise average-looking people making video calls, and now, Ewan’s spotted some teenage girls doing it as well.

Is this a trend, or just some isolated incidents brought together by the magic of my RSS reader? I’m still yet to see anybody use video calls outside a trade show demonstration.

Hehheh… At least I haven’t seen non-Nokia people making video calls yet. Have you?

    Tommi,

I saw in Italy (near the beach promenade) great scene. In front of the church in the evening was a young Italian familly. they have a little child that made first steps. They called to someone (videocall). They had recorded first steps and sent them live through the call. It was really beautifull and after this moment I know, videocalls have sense. But I think the usage is different than mobile operators and mobile producers wants. Rear camera for video calls is more important then front. Try post another question. Do you use for videocalls front or rear camera? :-)

Beautiful story - I guess this kind of moments are a “killer app” for video calls.

I won’t post another question, but I’m sure you are right. In fact, I think Nokia has officially supported more see-what-I-see kind of video calls than actual video calls where you see somebody’s nose in close range.

I was on a video call in Tokyo when I visited a Japanese friend and he wanted his wife who was at work at the time to get a chance to greet me. It was very cool. Now that I have a Nokia N80, I’ve tried to make video calls several times, but I have never managed to get one to work correctly. Of course, I was roaming at the time since there is no suitable 3G network here in the USA to allow me to make video calls.
