ps. sorry about not posting my latest thoughts about Nokia's barcode reader app, and about 2D barcode ecosystem. I will do so in due time. Please be patient.

what can i use to read them on my nokia n80?? is there any apps??

Currently, I don't have proper download links for you, but I'll let you know.

Posted by: Tommi Vilkamo | October 27, 2006 04:12 PM

Well, at least Nokia's Barcode reader application happily reads MS's barcodes (it's QR Code). Too bad the app itself isn't readily available for N80 etc. Like Tommi said, we are working on it. Business card data doesn't look like vCard, anybody know what it is?

Yeah, still waiting for the QR barcode reader for N80 (or other S60 v3 phones). Nokia should act faster, other solutions are emerging (e.g. ShotCodes)

thanks for answer.....i hope to have Barcode for n80 soon....! ;)

You can already read these QR Codes with most Western phones, because there are a couple of free apps out both for S60 and Java. Go look at: http://robertpeloschek.blogspot.com/2006/09/free-qr-code-readers-for-your.html

thanks man...this works well on my n80..

I guess this settles the format wars for 2D barcodes, since the Asian markets already are using QR, and with Microsoft supporting QR as well we are left with a de facto standard.

Not necessarily a bad thing, even though I know some are making convincing arguments for other barcode formats as well.

Standards is good - from a consumer and developer's standpoint. No need for lots of readers to read lots of different codes, and the developers don't have to create readers that can parse lots of different code formats.

Posted by: Vegard | October 30, 2006 10:18 AM

One good argument for choosing another format would be that it's non-proprietary. I think Nokia's approach of supporting both major formats is good.

Posted by: Jukka Eklund | October 30, 2006 05:44 PM

You do? One more reason for us users to be waiting impatiently for the Nokia reader then! :)

I agree with you, a completely open, non-proprietary system would be better as an industry standard de facto or otherwise if all else is equal.

Since a bundled barcode reader can pave the way for barcodes to enter mainstream usage outside of Asia, Nokia has an amazing opportunity to influence the direction this technology will take.

Supporting more than one format is a nice way to ensure innovation in the use of 2D barcodes, without locking us developers into one (possibly imperfect) standard. Thanks! :)

P.S. - what's the second standard? Data Matrix?

Posted by: Vegard | October 30, 2006 06:56 PM

Robert, thanks for the link! Especially, I liked the video. But about the 3rd party (add-on) barcode reader applications, I haven't yet seen one that could provide a decent user experience. That is, if they are general-purpose readers, not just something that decodes predefined proprietary standards. Feel free to prove me wrong :)

> Vegard: "what's the second standard? Data Matrix?"

Yup.

BTW, the Nokia reader in N93 doesn't seem to be able to handle bigger codes, it seems. Tested a ~60x60 bit code (198 characters), the Nokia SW tried and tried and got nothing. Then tried with our SW with N93's camera and decoded it just fine. Limitations somewhere?

Posted by: Symbiatch | November 1, 2006 10:35 AM

Symbiatch, where can I find "your SW" for N93?

Posted by: Jukka Eklund | November 1, 2006 07:24 PM

I saw this and kept meaning to blog about it, I almost couldn't believe they'd doing barcoding, especially without many apps in europe/america that use them.

I hope this is leading to some good support in various applications.

Posted by: Duncan Sample | November 6, 2006 05:09 PM

Jukka: You can't find this SW anywhere yet since it's under development. This is part of our Hain project and we hope to get a new release during this year. But since we have about four projects running inside the product I don't know when it'll be available. Probably in beta "soon."

At the moment I'm focusing on the needs of blind and visually impaired and that takes time. But hopefully it'll help embetter their lives and achieve more independency.

Ouch, MS site is down..
