September 21, 2006 Why is Eseries creating more passionate users than Nseries? (updated x2) Posted by Tommi at 08:14 PM | Categories: General

Note: the list was updated on 4th of October 2006. Languages partly guessed.

Current score: Eseries 19 - Nseries 3

My (and your) E61
Nokia E61 Blog (nokme.com)
TECHMUNDO 2.0
Roaming SmartPhone
My Your's & Our E- 61
E61addicted, in German
Gedankenmüll & Nokia E61, in German

businessMOBILE.fr / Smartphones Symbian, in French
E70 World, in Italian
E-61 Türkiye, in Turkish

Всичко за Nokia E61. На български!, in Bulgarian

Blogs dedicated to Nokia Nseries:
N80 Geek

Nokia N80, in Polish

Note that I didn't count blogs that appear to be somehow sponsored by Nokia, such as N70/N90/N91 blogs at bloggercomm, All about Nokia N91 blog and N93 WOM World.

If you know a Nokia-independent blog dedicated to Nseries or Eseries, drop a comment and I'll add it to the list. And please say if any of the listed blogs are in any way sponsored by Nokia.

ps. don't take this entry too seriously, I'm partly trying to attract Nseries fans to join the club and start blogging :-)

I've also been very impressed by the number of blogs dedicated to the E-series, and particularly to the E61, that appeared within just a few weeks of its release. You might want to add ESixtyOne (http://cavaillejs.free.fr/dotclear/index.php), a french blog dedicated to the E61 with some pretty good content (don't ask me why it's got an english name, french people are peculiar).

The other amazing thing is that, even though there is obviously some overlap between the different blogs, most of these blogs are of very good quality and have their own "personality" and original content.

I don't remember having seen such enthousiasm for a particular model of mobile phone before. I'm not sure how that should be interpreted but it's nice to be part of it anyway. Without these blogs, i wouldn't have known about half of the features of my E61.

An interesting blog to note is "Le blog des utilisateurs du Nokia-E61" (literaly: blog of the E61 users), a french blog that you've listed. This author of this blog would like it to be a kind of collaborative blog (hence the name) and offers anybody willing to post on his blog to do so. Just send him an email and he'll open an account for you allowing you to post whenever you feel like it. I quite like the idea: many people would sometimes like to post about a feature they like or a software or accessory they've tried but do not have the time or dedication to open their own blog. Such a blog would allow them to express their thought without the pressure of having to maintain their own blog. Quite cool.

As both a Nokia employee and a heavy user of the E61, I think availability is the key here: E61 has been widely available around the globe, while no one has seen any of the NSeries (except N90) here in Latin America, for example.

Also, the big screen + new browser combination is a killer. And the QWERTY keyboard. And push e-mail. And getting people to go "wooooooow can I see your phone?". And the big screen...

Availability isn't really an issue here (The Netherlands) so my theory is that the Eseries target a different kind of user. N series is more of an expensive toy, E series is more suitable for the tech-geek. Full size keyboard on the E61 and E70, Wifi support, SIP support. All great toys for geeks :)

The N-series are more suitable for showing off :) They are expensive, can play video, music, pretty OK camera, etc. They don't really have that much features that attract the more hardcore geeks.

But I guess availability in the US could be a pretty big factor too. They really do have a pretty weird distribution system in the US where it's almost impossible to buy an unlocked phone :\

Hi,

I have started a (very humble) E61-centric blog at http://roaming-smartphone.blogspot.com/

Keep up the good work, Tommi!

another blog worth noting is thisismobility. I like his take on things :)

hey tommi, when will the new E61 theme come out! :)

N80 blog from Poland - n80.blox.pl

Posted by: redbat | September 22, 2006 01:26 AM

I guess the target demographic of the Nseries is different from the one of the Eseries.

The Eseries has a clear business orientation. People who read a lot of news, navigate a lot, maintains their own blog (not in a myspace account), etc. I would call it "the producer demographic".

I think most people who have an Nseries phone are from the "consumer demographic". They listen to some podcasts, music, play games, etc.. They have not too much knowledge about the capabilities of the device, and usually they don't have a real weblog.

I think this because I have an N80, and I have browsed through a lot of places looking for information about it. Most Nseries users I have found are in gaming forums (and many of them are l33t and everything).

That's why my daily S60 site reading has almost only Eseries sites.

Hi Tommi,
As I read your article about the newly emerging E61 blogs, I would like to inform you that I have got one either. The blog is in Turkish and targets the Turkish users.
Note:With so much blogs perhaps we should form a kind of E61 Bloggers league or something :))

It's also interesting how directly this passion for eg. E61 translates to below the line ie. sales figures.

Posted by: Jukka Eklund | September 23, 2006 05:20 PM

Having chewed through this entire blog and every link i could find from it, i'm left wondering whether i made the right decision in returning my E61 yet again.

While waiting for the palm treo 750 now, regret sets in, and even my reservations at the minor issues i found with the e61 seem pointless the longer i keep having to use my old spv.

Is it worth waiting for this new palm doodad now? What does anyone else think? Every fibre of my sad being tells me to rush out tomorrow and get another E61, just to give it another chance... and now that it's out on Orange... eeee!

Posted by: Stripey | September 24, 2006 01:06 AM

Tommi,
I have a blog that I use for writing about travel, restaurants, and all sorts of topics. Since getting my N80 (which is GREAT), I've written a lot about it (and have a dedicated N80 category). Maybe N80 users are just more well-rounded in their interests (just joking!). :)

Hi,

I have a blog about Nokia phones in general. I haven´t had the time, but I would like to write more about tips & tricks and the daily use of my current phone, the N70. This would make my blog something of a Nseries blog and I guess my next phone will be a Nseries phone too.

Will try to focus more on my phone and Nseries!

Hey Tommi,

I just found this today actually, Steve Garfield has a blog that seems to be dedicated to the N93 http://nokiatestcenter.blogspot.com/ , Steve is a pretty well known video blogger and podcaster and I think he's been using the N93 for that purpose.

Cheers,

Karl

People can blog more easily from their E-Series handsets than from their N-Series ones because of the querty keyboard, hence more blogs ;)

Seriously though, I guess that the E-Series has more in the way of a "new concept" for people to adjust to than the N-Series.

The N-Series, generally, is just building on previous S60 phones, incrementally improving some features (camera/screen) and adding some extras (radio/gps). I have a feeling that the GPS in the N95 will draw a lot more comment because it's completely fresh and people need to talk about how best to use it! (And there should be some cool new applications around for GPS when it arrives!).

What i'm trying to say, is that the fresh concept (for Nokia anyway) combined with the fact that the user is buying the handsets for a specific purpose is why the E-Series generates more discussion. Loads of people I know have N-Series phones but don't really do a lot with them, whereas i'm not sure there would be many E-Series users that fall under than category :)

For the record i'm a very happy N73 user!

Hi Tommmi,

I have recently started a blog about Nokia E50 at http://nokiae50.info. It's not sponsored by Nokia.

Where are you Nbloggers? Ebloggers are beating you 20:3 :)

Owning an E60 and starting to feel lonely here.... Apart from feeling that i have the only not well known nokia phone ever existed.

Posted by: Gliatiotis | October 7, 2006 06:39 AM

I just started: http://thenokiablog.com

It's more towards Nseries because I am an Nseries user. I'll also be vblogging here with the Nokia N93.

Posted by: Mark Guim | October 7, 2006 11:00 AM

The simple reason why E-series attracts more passionate users? It is more polished than the N-series.

N-series phones are all about features, less about usabiliti or consistency. They are bulky, need time to learn and very very engineer centric.

Where as E-series phones are more straight forward, intuitive and less about the newest features.

Now think what would happen if you'd actually polish the E-series even further! You'd actually get similar fanaticism as Apple does.

Another E-series blog: E61 Junkie: http://e61junkie.wordpress.com/

This will increase the score again!

Hi Tommy, just to get your list complete - there is another german blog run by me and some others all about S60 3rd Edition Software and the E61 in particular. The name is Symbian60.mobi - and yes the "mobi" part is important, cos it also supports wap/pda versions besides the "normal" browser experience. just as .mobi domains demand it..

Thanks for sharing all the news on your blog - stay strong in 2007!
