September 27, 2006 Freeware DivX player Posted by Tommi at 12:57 PM | Categories: 3rd party S60 applications

Techmundo 2.0 reported a couple of days ago about the new freeware Divx player that Divx.com has released for Symbian based devices. To get it, you can go to http://mobile.divx.com/ with your mobile browser and fill in all your personal info etc. Or download the version for S60 3rd Edition directly from here. There should be versions available also for S60 1st/2nd edition and UIQ 2.x.

There are still some rough edges, but it's worth a try. You can find more commentary about the DivX Player over at e61life

Despite the "minimal" gui imho TCPMP remains the best.

You can find a functional version of TCPMP here. Look at zip archive at the bottom of the page.

Any idea if there is a UIQ 3.0 version of the player?

Here's the mencoder command that worked for me. I have little/no audio sync issues and am playing this at 24 fps on my Nokia E50. Dig it.

mencoder Angel\ -\ 5x08\ -\ Destiny.avi -ovc lavc -oac copy -lavcopts vbitrate=96:abitrate=64 -vf scale=352:193 -o e50/5x8.avi -ffourcc DIVX

Why did you use 352x193? Your E50 has a 320x240 landscape playback screen, not a 352x416. You are losing quality now on playback because the phone is forcing a resize on the fly (plus you are using more CPU and filesize).

Tried on my N80, but it seems that the performance is worse than SmartMovie. My N80 has a very hard time to play 416x352 DivX (480 KB/s). Even my former phone did better (MDA Compact), up to 640x480 2000 KB/s flawlessly.

Isn't there already a S50 v3 player out of TCPMP? Because it's the best for the WM platform imho :)

For Antal:

Haven't seen it yet.

Sorry venkat, I can't help you. Maybe there is a bug in the Divx player application, I don't know. Go to my-symbian.com (or some other app site) and look for alternative video playing applications.
