Our excellent Jade team (Nokia internal name for our graphics team) wanted to give you a little gift:
Download: Turquoise.sisx
This is the Turquoise theme that will be used in forthcoming Nokia devices based on S60 3rd Edition FP1. But since the Jade team was so kind, all you S60 3rd Edition owners can now use it too. Giving away the theme might sound like a small thing, but this is the first time our application team delivers software directly to end-users. With luck, this might be a "small step for man, but one giant leap for mankind".
In my opinion, the theme is just beautiful. Beautiful - and really usable at the same time, which is quite rare in the world of themes.
What do you think? Please share your thoughts, the Jade team is listening. In addition, please give a star ranking with scale 1 = worthless crap ... 5 = the best theme I have ever seen/used.
...and please feel free to give the theme to your friends and your own blog readers!
Bonus link: Getting rid of visual clutter, our previous discussion about themes
---
ps. the idea to give away the theme came from my boss's boss Mika L. Thank you Mika for your open-mindedness in encouraging this kind of experiments!!
pps. can we participate the e61life.com Theme Contest 2006 with this one?
Comments
Beautifully designed theme! Passes my no.1 criteria for themes. You can still easily read all the useful information available on the standby screen?
You should definately enter the contest with it!

Tommi,
Posted by: horia stanescu | September 29, 2006 04:04 PMthats a hell of a weekend gift!
Thank you so much.
Relaxed wkd to everybody here in Finland:-)
ps. REALLY glad to see it uses the Nokia squarish analogue clock. Why do so few theme developers make use of it? It's by far the classiest clock out there IMHO
Posted by: Ditch | September 29, 2006 04:11 PM=0)
really nice theme.excellent colour.can your team be some extra generous, then why not release this theme for 2nd edition devices as well.there are still large no. Of devices.
Posted by: pratik | September 29, 2006 05:39 PMlooks great on my E61. my new favorite theme!
Posted by: Momchil Karabulev | September 29, 2006 05:41 PMthanks
Tommi, as long as the theme is not commercial. If not you are free to submit it :)
Thank you for both posting this theme and mentioning the contest.
Posted by: Daniel | September 29, 2006 06:37 PMHmm, I still prefer the E-series demo theme.
Posted by: trat | September 29, 2006 06:48 PMTommi, thanks!
Your Apache is configured to send this as "text/plain" mimetype; it doesn't download correctly on the phone (at least not on my E50). Add this to your Apache config / .htaccess file:
AddType application/vnd.symbian.install .sis .sisx
I have a few more tips (jars, wml, etc) in a short post here:
http://rivviepop.wordpress.com/2006/01/27/configuring-your-apache-for-cellphone-browsing/
Posted by: rivviepop | September 29, 2006 06:56 PMNice, theme but is still uses 1.4m more memory than the IGBase white theme, and Ditch I hate the square clock :-)
Posted by: Nick | September 29, 2006 07:13 PMVery nice theme indeed. And very readable too. I love the look of the menus and dialog boxes. It's a real shame that the clock looks so bad though.
Posted by: vioccc | September 29, 2006 09:39 PMOMG! All this abuse for the square clock!! :-0 Haven't you guys heard that minimalist is VERY in right now? ;-)
Okay (without hijacking this thread) what is the coolest analogue clock then? :-p ;-) Point us to some screenshots examples.
Posted by: Ditch | September 29, 2006 10:02 PMI like this new theme. It looks "fresher" than the previous theme. I just found a little bit odd to have green color as selection because the background is dominated with blue/white color. Anyway, it's nice theme... :)
Posted by: Antony Pranata | September 29, 2006 10:12 PMThis is a great theme, less is more!
Also I cant help but notice the date in the screenshot, have to take that as nod from our neighburs in the east ;-)
Posted by: Frode | September 30, 2006 12:55 AMCan we get it saved for S60 Second Edition? It looks great...
Posted by: Neil | September 30, 2006 06:49 AMthis theme looks very good, i'd love to have it on my phone. Too bad it wouldn't work on my n70.
Posted by: Hardeep Singh | September 30, 2006 09:41 AMI like this theme. I have always loved the simple clock! :D
Thx.
Posted by: JD | September 30, 2006 09:51 AMNo matter how it looks, which is a matter of personal taste, this theme is unusable on Asian language phones such as my HK-bought N80. When you use pinyin to type Simplified Chinese there is no contrast in the window, you do not see what you type and you do not see what different pinyin match your key combination.
Nokia shall correct this issue and re-release ASAP.
Posted by: PrinceOfThieves | September 30, 2006 09:58 AMPrinceOfThieves: we shall look into it, and take necessary actions.
Keep in mind though, if this problem is specific to 3rd Edition non-FP1, it might impossible or too much trouble to fix.
Posted by: Jukka Eklund | September 30, 2006 12:49 PMTommi and Mika, thank you SO much for this new theme. I have been looking for a new theme for my N80, and this is just what I wanted. I have a Chinese N80 (Singapore) too, and the contrast is OK for me when typing Chinese, so that issue may vary from user to user. The green selection color is cool and makes things super-easy to read. As for the clock, it's fine with me -- I like round a little better, but it's not big deal. Thanks again for sharing. Please thank the whole Jade team for me!
Posted by: Bruce | September 30, 2006 06:31 PMthanks for the theme guys,
Posted by: Flash | September 30, 2006 06:35 PMbut I just don't like that color :D
Thanks a lot for sharing the theme with us already Nokia smartphone users, it would be a really good gift if you make a theme like this but in blue and that work fine and correctly in NOkia E-61.
There is only one theme that fits perfectly this phones and some of the themes made by users outside of Nokia are fine but it does not work properly on E61.
Regards
Posted by: Valmore Leon | September 30, 2006 07:28 PMJukka & Tommi -
Is this going to be an optional theme, with the existing one (from E/N) also there? After using it for a day, it's really anooying on the eye, the colours. I honestly don't think it's anywhere as usable as the current one. It also looks a little less professional (like when you hand your boss your E phone to use), but that's my opinion.
With the current one I don't feel the need to go out and find a new one, it's colours and style are completely fine on the eyes. This Turquiose, though, really starts to get harsh.
$0.02 USD. :)
Posted by: rivviepop | September 30, 2006 08:34 PMWow, thanks Tommi/Nokia for sharing this cool theme! I put it on my N73 and it looks great!
Posted by: karen | September 30, 2006 09:54 PM:-)
like you said Beautiful Just Beautiful replaced the black theme on my E 61 now it looks more bright
Posted by: Farhan | September 30, 2006 10:08 PMTommi,
Your post rank widget isn't working because of a MajikWidget issue, so people can't vote anymore. I thought you would want to know.

Posted by: Bruce | September 30, 2006 11:10 PMTo Ditch:
If you like minimalist designs, check out the analog clock used in the Fire theme: http://www.e-series.org/wp-content/uploads/TScreenshot0128.jpg It's minimalist yet looks really nice and modern unlike the clock used in the
Turquoise theme which looks like it comes straight from a 10 years old mobile.
But one of the best analog clock i've found must be Aqua's one: http://www.e-series.org/wp-content/uploads/Today.jpg
Posted by: vioccc | October 1, 2006 12:10 AMIt would look gorgeous with the Turquoise theme.
tommi!
beautiful theme!!!
Posted by: agwe23 | October 1, 2006 11:11 PMNice theme Tommi!
Posted by: ZafaV | October 2, 2006 12:07 AMBut where is all business themes for E-series?
I mean sometihing simple and easy-to-use...
E70
Very fresh theme, gives 'minty' feeling.
Posted by: Lauri Humina | October 2, 2006 10:49 AMText looks much more sharper compared to default theme.
And the calendar is fantastic now, so much better than default theme.
Music player looks fine.
Overall great theme, I'll use it from now on.
Thanks everybody for your comments! Glad to hear you liked it :)
---
pratik: I'll ask from the Jade team.
rivviepop: thanks for the tip, I'll ask Phil if he could fix it.
PrinceOfThieves: please send me a screenshot. Others too - if the theme gets broken in some circumstances, please send me a screenshot and we'll look into it.
rivviepop(2): it's not going to be the only theme. Products and product families will most probably have additional themes of which you can choose from.
Bruce: darn... I knew there was something wrong with Majikwidget. What voting widget should I use in the future?
Posted by: Tommi Vilkamo | October 2, 2006 03:32 PMNice theme, thanks for that... But I notice this theme has 7 active standby icons in the screenshot. Is this because this screenshot is from S603rd FP1?
Since my N73 has 'only' 6 active standby icons... Or will it then simply show just those 6. Just wondering :) Tnx again though!
Posted by: DGR | October 3, 2006 09:42 AMvioccc
Thanks, for the links. You're right, that clock in 'Fire' is VERY nice & very minimalist! ;0)
The red flock wallpaper takes a bit of getting used to (I feel like I'm in Sherlock Holmes' smoking lounge) ;0) but FIRE does seem to give the best text/background contrast I've seen in a theme for a while.
Cheers,

Heh, I must admit that it was a pure coincidence. I assume you are talking about Norwegian Constitution Day? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwegian_Constitution_Day
Posted by: Tommi Vilkamo | October 3, 2006 11:22 AMHi guys!
Posted by: mischock | October 3, 2006 11:23 AMPlease tell me will this theme appear no the screen of 7610 device?
Tommi and Mika,
The theme is beautiful!! Even though my selection of themes is a bit more "noisy" then most as Tommi so pointed out in his post on visual clutter, sometimes I prefer tranquil backgrounds. This theme definately defines that. Oh and for the record... I am a HUGE fan of the square clock!! Hmm, this would like nice in pink also :)
Posted by: Darla | October 3, 2006 11:23 PMHi, as per I said above this theme is very nice; but, it would be nice from Nokia to put in the support section under phone software the dark stripes and steel too themes in order for the people that have the E61 could enjoy them too, my E61 just came with the Nokia default theme.
Regards
Posted by: Valmore Leon | October 4, 2006 12:45 AMgood
Posted by: akash | October 4, 2006 01:47 PMrivviepop: thanks for the tip! It's now fixed.

Hi, really nice theme, just a question, installing this theme on E61 locate a flash file that suppose to work like screen saver, so how to configure like that?
Also, is any chance to obtain themes that comes by default (dark stripes and silver) with the E62?
Thx.
Posted by: diego | October 6, 2006 02:28 AMHello,
Same question than Diego, would that be possible?

Posted by: Valmore. | October 6, 2006 03:23 AMYou can't see what character when input in msg (Chinese input). anyway this is the best theme i saw so far. well done.

Posted by: anina.net | October 7, 2006 11:28 AMHi, I posted the "Chinese trouble" screenshots on allaboutsymbian.com . Thanks a lot

Posted by: Tommi Vilkamo | October 9, 2006 09:00 AMHi Tommy, the theme looks great. Could I suggest that you swap that green selection color for magenta? That would go well with the turquoise color and stands out well, as a selection color should.

Heh... I asked about versions of the theme with different colors, but I think it is unlikely you'll get such, at least this time. Sorry.
Posted by: Tommi Vilkamo | October 11, 2006 11:12 PMHi Tommy, the theme looks great. Please guide for the way to set sreensaver "Tuaquoise screensaver"(extract from themes as flash lite) for my N80 !
Posted by: Nam | October 12, 2006 05:31 AMNam, you cant: http://blogs.s60.com/tommi/2006/10/turquoise_screen_saver.html
Posted by: Tommi Vilkamo | October 12, 2006 10:03 AMThank you about your link. I'm very love the theme, but i don't like the grey colour of option box, if the change grey colour by colour background, i think the theme will be very nice and suite.
Posted by: Nam | October 13, 2006 06:07 AMOhh.. the further you and your team will issue the new revision of this theme?
Hi Tommi!
This theme is really nice, but it doesn't work with the Golf Pro Contest game that Nokia gives away free here: http://europe.nokia.com/A4151182 . When using this turquoise theme and playing GPC, the clubs and strike angle cannot be seen on the bottom part of screen. -TJ-
Posted by: TJ | October 19, 2006 09:16 AMThanks Tommi, great theme! Very generous to give it away.
Posted by: MK | October 29, 2006 09:32 PMseems Realy very nice.

Posted by: Tommi Vilkamo | October 30, 2006 09:02 PMThanks for your kind words. I had today a chat with the theme creators, and as we briefly talked about your feedback, they smiled a lot :-)
Simply the best..
Posted by: Mambo | November 1, 2006 04:26 AMIt is perfect and very elegant. Wonderful, thank you very much!
just wanna know when the Chinese input text and background will be fix, i can't see what both are white in color? i real like this theme,...
Posted by: Johnny | November 6, 2006 05:43 PMThe green selection color stands out a little too much. Otherwise, one of the best themes I've seen.
Posted by: AZIZ | November 10, 2006 09:00 PMthis is now my default theme on my e61, thanks
it's just easier on the eyes it seems
Posted by: Stefan Constantinescuthis is what being used in my phone alternatively with the original default 'nokia' one. love the black text, beautiful color and background, even the Chinese text input problem exists:)
Posted by: richard | November 26, 2006 03:26 PMone more request: why did you leave the bottom bar color so harsh instead of blending with the main section like the top bar? I like the original 'nokia' theme because the color change so gradually from the top till the bottom with no noticeable color division line.
and could you make it possible that the analogue clock have several options? the nokia original square one is simple and conceptual, but difficult to tell the exact time when needed sometimes.
Posted by: richard | November 26, 2006 03:33 PMThanks Richard for the feedback. But as far as I know, we won't publish different versions of the theme (for example, with different clocks) this time.
Posted by: Tommi Vilkamo | November 27, 2006 01:16 PMtoo bad to heard that, but i think at least have the Chinese text input color fix.
Posted by: Johnny | November 28, 2006 05:35 AMJohnny: I can't give you any details, but based on what I heard, the problem with Chinese text input color was not in the Turquoise theme. That is, we can't fix it just by releasing a new sis file. And I'm not sure has this been fixed in new firmware releases yet.
In any case, sorry about this.

Good question. I forwarded it to the people behind Nokia themes, let's see what they think.

Posted by: Alex | June 28, 2007 11:55 AMHas anyone tried to install this theme on a Nokia 6290? I get the "can not install; the component is already built-in" error. It installs fine on my N80 and looks great.
Posted by: Jim | July 2, 2007 04:34 AMKim, the error message sums it up correctly: that theme is already installed. It's called Nokia theme if I recall correctly.
Posted by: Jukka Eklund | July 2, 2007 11:26 AMJukka, The Nokia Theme (called Nokia Theme) that comes preinstalled with the 6290 is a Blue Theme.
Posted by: Jim | July 2, 2007 11:55 AMHi,
Is it possible to change the icons for active standby applications?
E.g. I have 3 web links on my A/s list, which all come up with the same icon.
How can I edit this please on a N73.
