August 29, 2006 What would you change about built-in S60 applications? Posted by Tommi at 09:51 AM | Categories: Nokia S60 applications

mic.jpg

In my last post Analyzing the feedback for Nokia devices based on S60 3rd Edition, James asked how you could send improvement suggestions for Nokia, and I promised to devote a thread to it. Let's narrow the scope here to the built-in S60 apps, because it is the only area I have any direct influence on.

What are the 3 things you would change about built-in S60 applications?

What should we add? What should we remove? What should we change? Please list three wishes maximum.
---
Note: as always, Nokia is free to implement or not to implement whatever you suggest here. There is no official process whatsoever how your comments could turn into real improvements in Nokia products, but I promise to do my best. At least a hundred or so Nokia people are listening...

- autolock without entering the security code
- recurring alarm with snooze function
- improved calendar

Posted by: Momchil Karabulev | August 29, 2006 11:17 AM

- Audio player with position resume. This way you may comfortably listen to audio books

For the 2 other wishes I may need to ask my daughter about her 3250 :-)

- Notes categorization
- Calendar remote sync (i.e.: Google Calendar)
- Improve Calc usability (have a look at mtvoid Calcium*)

another one feature that i'm missing

- rewind function for videos in real player

Posted by: Momchil Karabulev | August 29, 2006 11:40 AM

Categories and priorities in calendars.

Ability to subscribe to vCal files (such as dotMac / google).

Many people don't understand why the default screensaver don't supports e.g. animated gif or images at all. That's something many S40 users are used to.

Even better would be if we could use (special) JAVA MIDlets as screensavers like SE phones can.

Posted by: Björn Quentin | August 29, 2006 11:55 AM

- [to add] a real phonebook 2.0, that would be presence-enabled with open-interface towards big IM providers (MSN, Yahoo, ...), a bit like the UI of the coming Sony Mylo (i.e. the messaging/presence part).
- [to replace] the default IM app (wireless village I guess) and SMS/MMS mngt UI for a real full-featured SMS/IM/MMS/Poc client/UI ala Agile messenger. Note this can be combined within the phonebook 2.0
- [to improve] a snappy gallery/lifeblog ala Picasa (but mobile version).

Sounds a bit like dreams, but that's what wishes are for ;-)

1) recurring alarm
2) bluetooth "auto off" after file send complete (if "auto on" was used)
3) showing and hiding of active desk by ABC button (such as in Samsung D720)

Posted by: Victor Samohin | August 29, 2006 12:49 PM

You mean I only get to change 3 things...!

1. System wide font size options and/or zooming options. Not everyone wants their fonts at the same size. Has become a problem with the multi resolution screen sizes in 3rd Edition

2. Better device search. Contacts is the worst culprit. I want to search all fields (E50 Search app as standard would be a start). But also optional smart dial from the Idle Screen.

3. (Better) support for categories. Not sure how much I would use this myself, but it seems to be one of the most common complaints about PIM on S60.

Right I'll stop there. There's plenty more though. May be I feel an article coming on :)

Posted by: Rafe | August 29, 2006 01:00 PM

How about the ability to record directly from the radio? You know if a nice song is on, you should be able to record it! :-)

Posted by: Zainuddin Zafar | August 29, 2006 01:10 PM

How about some of the most simple and yet essential application as default:
1) Autokeylock (like in good old nokia phones)
2) Timed profile ( -"- )
3) Countdown timer/stop watch ( -"- )

These are all available from outsiders and mostly free. But requires that you install external application instead of something that should be simple enough to implement at the OS level like in old phones.

Posted by: Samir | August 29, 2006 02:01 PM

1: Birthday alarms linked to birthdays set on a contact in the contacts (Phonebook) list. Option to activate the alarm when you add birthday to the contact.

2: Create new folders below root level of menu system (for instance in "My own" folder)

3: Ability to define voice activation phrases for all installed applications on the phone, not just the ones that are included in S60.

Posted by: Vegard | August 29, 2006 02:19 PM

1) Being able to select text in the s60 web browser.
2) In Contacts it'd be nice to have a select-all-in-group-option or to have the same menu for contacts in a group as in the main menu.
3) Smaller typeface in the notes-application and/or a more businessy interface.
4) Display signal-strength for wireless lan instead of or in addition to battery and gsm/3g-coverage.
5) Option to turn of the beep-sound when voice recording a call.

Posted by: Svante | August 29, 2006 02:30 PM

- Calendar remote sync
- Recurring alarm with snooze function
- More Flash Lite support and pre installed applications

Posted by: Moca | August 29, 2006 02:33 PM

1. recurring alarm (e.g. weekdays/every day/one off) and stopwatch/egg timer
2. turn camera flash on or off without using the camera
3. be able to type in a number and get it to look up the entry in the phone book (e.g. for when a number calls your landline, or you want to look up a number on your bill)

And don't get rid of the pen/edit/abc key!

Posted by: Hugo | August 29, 2006 02:47 PM

1. modular standby screen - support for 3rd party plugins like on Windows Mobile
2. tags or categories in notepad
3. usable alarm clock

Posted by: Kerozin | August 29, 2006 02:49 PM

- improve calendar and include a Recurring alarm with snooze function

- photocall in fullscreen mode

- smylies in messages like sonyericsson

Posted by: SlipKoRnSaad | August 29, 2006 02:56 PM

I think everybody feels there's much more than 3 things to be upgraded, I think you know it too, but for order sake, it has to be limited to 3.. well the first three things i can see are:

1) IM - having a real and proper IM service connecting to Gtalk, MSN, iCQ etc, right from the box

2) Lifeblog, why is it here for? Never used it never will.. if only it was a direct connection to blogger or other blog engines, than it would be good.

3) the calendar should be integrated with contacts, so for instance a birthday date in the contacts would be automatically added to the calendar. the alarm should be more configurable too.

for now this are the first three things, but there's more...

Posted by: Alexandre Silva | August 29, 2006 03:06 PM

Here's a big one:

- Being able to save pages in the browser for off-line viewing !

Posted by: Arthur | August 29, 2006 03:21 PM

I love S60v3, but there are some simple things
1) Support standard SyncML all-day events, instead of making them events that run from 12:00am-11:59 pm.

2) Birthdays entered in for my contacts should show up in my calendar as all-day events (and my active standby screen)

3) Merge "Services" with "Web Browser", so you can browse WAP and HTTP pages from the same app.

BONUS) This is big-- Please please please give us the ability to save files in our inbox! If I bluetooth a file to my phone, there is no way to save it to my filesystem directly from my inbox.

Keep up the good work!
-Eric

Ciao

Well my 3 apps:

1-Integration of Picuters/Videos with online sharing service
2-VideoTones for S60 is not supported why?
3-A screen sharing application

I think Nokia should do an experiment like the Chumby: http://www.biskero.org/?p=761
then you will will see all kinds of innovative ideas coming out from the developer community.

Wow! Thanks everybody. I'll classify and consolidate your wishes into a single master list, to be shared with everybody in Nokia who is interested. Keep posting your "three wishes" :)

Posted by: Tommi Vilkamo | August 29, 2006 04:08 PM

1) Nokia web browser requires many fixes, the most important of which are RAM management (CONSTANTLY runs out of memory on any E-series device) and the ability to select where the cache is stored. While we're on the subject of the browser, whoever mentioned being able to select text above is dead on - you've got a cursor, let us use it!!!

2) The lack of a fully functional alarm and timer is silly. HandyClock is great, but it's sad to have to fork over cash for what should be a standard feature.

3) Bug fixes, bug fixes, bug fixes. I'd rather see this happen then 100+ awesome new apps get developed. For example, on my E70, I can't change the last name, first name contact list, have HUGE (5MB+) memory leaks that result when launching the browser and flipping the keypad open (the culprit is the flipagent), etc etc. Memory leaks are the most pressing issue (precious RAM!) but annoyances and lack of simple functionality (see above) are total frustrations as well.

Here's to hoping Nokia is reading!

Posted by: JP | August 29, 2006 04:11 PM

Also, a quick comment on autolock functionality to follow up on the first comment above:

In addition to needing an autolock feature built in, it drives me NUTS that when you go to unlock your phone at night, unless you know which keys to press, you're in literally in the dark. On every other cell phone I've ever owned, hit any key, and the keypad stays locked, but the screen stays locked. Hit any key on a locked 3rd edition phone, and the screen stays dark untill it's completely unlocked. In addition to removing the ability to quickly check the status/standby screen with a quick button press at night, it makes unlocking the phone for new owners/borrowers very confusing.

Posted by: JP | August 29, 2006 04:15 PM

Only 3 things is though...

-recurring alarms: Something that basic should be there.

-using the camera flash as a torch (without starting the camera & with a simple shortcut)

-the ability to use a full-screen standby-screen background image (without having to tinker around with the Theme Creator)

But basically I agree with most things mentioned above. S60 is great, but with a few new things and small changes it could be amazing.

@Alexandre Silva: I use Lifeblog, and I think it's amazing - I'd probably buy another NSeries device in the future over a similar spec'ed device just for that...

Posted by: Christian Lettenbichler | August 29, 2006 04:18 PM

Thanks for making this thread Tommi! ...and whoa! I didn't expect to see so many responses so soon!

Here are my top 3 wishes:

  • Have a setting to enable old-skool "end-call" button behaviour, i.e.: just switch to the idle screen, don't kill the foreground app. I can understand that the new approach may be good to save RAM for users who aren't aware they can multitask on their phone, but I think power-users would appreciate the option to go back to what they're used to from older S60 devices
  • Be more Mac friendly. Perhaps include iSync plug-ins with new phones so users don't need to wait for months until Apple add support for synching contacts and calendars. Maybe bundle apps to do some of the stuff PC Suite does like backups. Better still, open up the protocols that PC Suite uses so people can write their own PC Suite-like software for any platform (even without formal support I'm sure the Linux community would be happy about this sort of thing!).
  • Support for multiple calendars. I think it's already been asked for, but this would be great. I like to keep my work & personal calendar events separate and it's a shame I can't do so on my phone. Some clever syching options would be good here too. For example I may only want to synch my work events with my work PC, but still have other calendar entries on my phone too.
Posted by: James | August 29, 2006 04:36 PM

yeay! i get to do three wishes :)

1) s60v3 version of the sensor application
2) autolock
3) hmmm, will have to think about the third one for a while longer ;)

cheers to the s60 app team!!!

Posted by: lauri | August 29, 2006 05:40 PM

Hi Tommi,

The fact that you're asking for feedback from users is just fantastic. Take it a step further and setup a wiki. Each of the built-in apps can be discussed there and let people add their recommendations. I think it will make it easier for the guys on your end to categorize the requests and it will help us concentrate on the features that are really necessary. Just a thought...

Ok, here are my 3 requests. All are around what I do most... make calls, send messages and PIM.

1. From the new message screen, can I have a drop-down menu for the "To:" field that has the 10 last people I messaged and the option to search the contacts if the person I'm looking for is not there.

2. Contact search by first initial of first name --space-- last name.

3. Integrate Notes into every single aspect of the Calendar and PIM. In other words, I would like to see a way to add a note to a to-do, a note to an appointment, a note to a Birthday, a note for a Contact, etc.

Oh and one more.... I know, I know... only three.

4. When a text message comes in. Instead of telling me via an alert that there's a new message, just show me the full message in that alert. And for those getting naughty messages and are afraid that other people will see them.... give them a "private mode" which would be equal to the way you do it now "You have 1 new message".

5. On the E61, there should be no reason not to use that big ass screen. Please show the contact name and the phone number(s) and email in the same Contact screen. I should be able to search for a contact and as the search gets more accurate, be able to not only choose the person I want to call/message, but the number or email address I want to use right from that same screen.

And last, but not least, take a look at the "ease of use comparison" with screens/images between PalmOS, Windows Mobile and S60.... please, please take a look at this:

http://www.palmsource.com/palmos/whyPalmOS.html

Regards and thank you for giving us the users the opportunity to make S60 a kick-ass platform.

Regards,

Jose Marinez
P.S. - if you want me to send you images of how the features should look like, I can send them to you.... just ping me.

Posted by: Jose Marinez | August 29, 2006 05:47 PM

@Christian Lettenbichler we know everybody have different needs and uses of the software :)

I also would like to know, why do nokia still shortens words even if they have so much space for it.. like in the E61 where many words are shorten and there's a lot of space for it....

Posted by: Alexandre Silva | August 29, 2006 05:52 PM

All the above plus.....
1) Ability to paste into the standby screen like when entering a number to call.
2) Have access point profiles for defining prefered access point order. i.e when the browser is going to connect to an acess point it will select the first one in your list. So when your at home and it can detect your WLAN network it will connect to that - otherwise it will goto the cellular access point, etc.. It's naff that you can only select one ot alwasy ask.
2) Have an emulator that will allow the user to run old S60 apps/games on S60v3 wholey at their own risk. It very very bad that all my hard earned cash spent on games is wasted with my N80.
3) Mozilla Thunderbird and calendar support and ability to sync bookmarks n stuff.
3) Access point backup utility.....

I'll stop now....

Posted by: Jase | August 29, 2006 05:59 PM

@jose marinez

this comparison site is just wrong.. i take 3 steps wither to add an entry in the calendar and to call someone in the contact list...

Posted by: Alexandre Silva | August 29, 2006 06:02 PM

1. right click in web browser e.g. to open link in new window or save on screen images.
2. Speed Dial shows "Name" other than just the number.
3. Timed Profile

I htink I would have requested Auto Keylock feature but tht problem was solved by a freeware i found. but should have been built-in.

Posted by: karar | August 29, 2006 06:08 PM

Oh, one more thing I forgot in regard to the web browser--

When you go back to the previous page in history, would it be possible to cache the rendered page, so going "back" would be very fast (like in Firefox 1.5). I know there is a limited amount of memory, but perhaps it wouldn't be so bad.

Posted by: Eric | August 29, 2006 06:16 PM

1. Ability to reassign keys e.g. audio recording and email key.
2. ability to configure blinking light on set to blik on unread sms / missed call other than just email.
3. universal volume up/down key usage... e.g. lowering volume of game using external volume keys. and assigning scrolling of documents/websites to them.

Posted by: karar | August 29, 2006 06:19 PM

If only three things and only about built-in apps:
1) Make them load FASTER
2) Make the camera start FASTER. 2-3 seconds before the shot on N70.. well, you just miss the moment too often
3) Finally make a voice recorder that can record more, than 1 minute and can record the conversation

Posted by: Artem Marchenko | August 29, 2006 07:08 PM

My 2 remaining wishes:
- In Address Book let me assign a certain phone for contact as 'main'. This way to save me one click when I want to call someone. Yes, just like you do it on S40 phones
- In Calendar the only usable event type is an Appointment. You should make possible assing a time and a phone contact to Remainder. When it activate, give me a possibility to call this contact right away. And yes, integrate Calendar with Address Book for birthdays (don't forget to allow me to notify myself in advance)

Posted by: Michael Makalkin | August 29, 2006 07:54 PM

1) Autolock for keypad (without lock code)

2) Stopwatch or countdown timer with 1 second resolution

3) If the active theme doesn't include all skinnable items, these are shown in the default blue&white. This looks quite horrible on some skins. A more subtle gray scale or preferably the possibilty to choose a color would make for a much smoother experience.

Posted by: Igor Mortis | August 29, 2006 08:34 PM

1. Calendar - all round improvement drastically required but especially notes, views and categories.
2. 'Today' screen - why not just 'unread' messages, why not more than one/two appointments. Make more flexible.
3. Search system-wide. (I can't quite believe it that there is no proper search within the Notes application...?).

Posted by: alistairj | August 29, 2006 10:09 PM

1.multiple calendar / isync support
2. Alarm clock, timer with more functionality
3. Make selecting a wifi network easier

tnx

Posted by: kxe | August 30, 2006 12:26 AM

I had no idea the trouble I was causing with my request for additional bluetooth profiles on the other post, but I would like to commend you for being open to taking suggestions from users. Anyway, here are my three:
1. Add a2dp and avrcp bluetooth profiles for use with the audio and video players. This seems to be standard with the new SE phones but is missing from the S60 line. If you want to market them as multimedia devices and not just phones then the feature set should live up to the billing.
2. Another request for position resume in the audio and video players. This would make S60 devices much more usable for listening to podcasts and watching movies or longer videos.
3. Extending profiles to include not only timed profiles but switching profiles based on connect or disconnect to a specific bluetooth device or wifi access point and/or location based switching based on cell tower.

Posted by: troublemaker | August 30, 2006 01:23 AM

@ Alexandre Silva

I can see how maybe.... maybe if you have a person with a "default" phone number setup you can make a call from scratch using the d-pad in 3 steps. Reality is that there are other interfaces out there that do have some advantages over S60 at the moment.

The Treo 650 and 700p for example have the advantage of a touch screen. That's something that current S60 devices don't use nor take into consideration. In other words, there are things that Palm can do with the UI of the Treos that Nokia cannot do due to the lack of a touch interface. However, some of the examples that you see on that site, have nothing to do with touch and everything to do with bringing out the features you need the most out of "Options" and keeping the users in mind.

For example... I live in the US and I have a Nokia 3G phone, unfortunately none of the US 3G bands are supported by any Nokia phone. As a result, to save battery I have stated in my setup that I'm using "GSM only", no 3G. If you don't have 3G, wouldn't you assume that you can't make a Video Call, specially if the phone doesn't have Wi-fi? If you follow my logic then you can see the humor in this... why should the Voice Call or Video Call screen be an option if I already said under settings that I'm not using 3G? Do you see what I mean?

This is something that's common sense if you spend a lot of time paying attention to the small details. As a matter of fact, all you need to do to come up with a great interface is to "watch the users" and try your best to reduce the clicks in a logical manner.

I hope I don't come across as a "Palm Lover", but reality is that if it wasn't because of the S60 reliability, I probably wouldn't be an S60 user. The Treo 650 and 700p are the most user friendly smartphones in the market right now, and that's a fact, not an opinion - I can easily demonstrate it via a "click count" study and I can challenge anyone at Nokia on this. However, when it comes to robustness and reliability on the OS side, S60 does a much better job - unless you've been using one of the rushed S60 3rd Edition smartphones.

The point behind showing that link is to show that there are other ideas out there that make life simple and you know what.... simplicity is today's main competitive advantage.... iPod anyone?

Even while S60 has the largest share of the world's smartphone market, it doesn't mean that there's no room for improvement, specially when it comes to usability. There are many reasons why S60 is not doing well in the US and usability is one of them.

Regards,

Jose

Posted by: Jose Marinez | August 30, 2006 01:53 AM

I'm using an N70, so some of this may have changed in 3rd Edition, but...

- Have a "Number of Inbox Messages" option, like for Sent Items, so that once the number is reached, the oldest gets deleted automatically.

- Bluetooth browsing of the file system without installing PC Suite. This would be great for Mac users.

- Better support for "First Name First" in Contacts. It only affects contacts, when you get messages etc. they still display with last name first, also in Messages, if you've only put in a first name (cause you met them in a bar and don't know their last name) then when you go to pick them to send a message it sort of doubles their name and displays their first name as first AND last name (e.g. John John), this certainly shouldn't happen and it should appear the same as it does in Contacts.

Posted by: SeaWolf | August 30, 2006 04:00 AM

I know I'm only supposed to get three, but something else just occured to me. One thing I see on phone forums again and again, is users asking how they can set a fullscreen wallpaper on their shiny new S60 phone, only be told they can't, that only S40 phones can have fullscreen wallpaper set by the user. This is something that really should change.

Posted by: SeaWolf | August 30, 2006 07:35 AM

I would have to vote for updating the PIM software. I would expect something up to the standard of the Palm software.

My Palm IIIe from many years ago had better PIM software than even the latest business S60 phones. That means full syncronisation of most fields from Outlook and category support.

Full search across all built in applications comes to mind as well.

Last thing is auto setting of ringing profiles based on calendar entries.

Posted by: Jody | August 30, 2006 08:40 AM

Hi Tommi,

Looks like your are getting quite some attention. I've got two suggestions as well:

1. The MMS creation utility and especially the viewer could really use some enhancements. Compared to the MMS utilities and viewer on Sony Ericsson phones the S60 version looks dated.

2. Add search capability for the calender

Martin

Posted by: Martin | August 30, 2006 09:52 AM

I've been using s60 since Nokia 6600. And I changed to 3250 since my 6600 was broken :(
A lot of things are worse in 3rd edition :(

1) Provide a kill application function. Sometimes even signed applications refuse to exit or hangs (Yes, bugs are unlimited). And I cannot terminate that other than by restarting the phone. Maybe do something like Windows XP: when the user presses C button to close the app, when the app doesn't close after 10 seconds, provide option to kill it.

2) Make SMS replying consistent: before opening the message, I can reply the message by "Options" -> down 2 times -> click (to select "Reply"). But when the message is opened, I reply the message by "Options" -> click (to open "Reply") -> click again (to select "Via text message").

2.5) How come there is no simple way to export my Notepad to PC?

3) Release a program to access and modify ALL files both in C: and E: ! Yes I know there will be no 3rd party applications that are granted that capability, but NOKIA itself should be able to create that. When Windows XP, Mac, Linux, even Windows Mobile provide access to the system files via special tool, why not s60!? I feel like my phone is opposing me by not letting me know the internals!!! Even applications can spam the C: drive and I cannot remove the files!

@ josemarinez

hello. no default number. i just did what they did. i simply don't press options all the time like they do.
3 steps to call:

1. open contact list
2. seect the contact you want
3. press green

nothing easier..

1) Longer notes: currently font is way too large, and about half of the screen is wasted by decorations/status bars.

2) Phonebook that can handle much more entries. I currently don't sync my contacts to PC since the phonebook isn't very usable after you have hundreds of entries there. Again, smaller font, less space waster by decorations/status bars, etc. might help.

3) Screensaver with big clock! (currently the font is way too small; and yes, I do have "XXL ScreenSaver")

Posted by: Pasi | August 30, 2006 01:12 PM

fastkey to make a voice recording and make a calendar or task from the recording.

Posted by: Hakan | August 30, 2006 01:25 PM

Add a digital compass in the phone. This would make GPS navigation much easier for slow motion or hiking.

1. autosync Browser bookmarks with del.icio.us (Yahoo apps are cool. If you can't solve this problem, than an option to sync my bookmarks with Firefox and/or IExplorer.)

2. an option to delete never used apps. I don't need snakes, card deck, kodak, recorder and movie at all.

3. if point 2. does'nt work, than an option in the Settings menu to hide never and rarely used applications icons. Now I have a "junk" folder for those.

Photo Gallery:

1) The ability to create "true" folders. Now if you put a photo in a folder it does not disappear from the main view.

2) Faster thumbnail generation when opening

Sorry I'm a bit late, but the one thing that I would really like changed is in the Bluetooth functionality.

Why, *oh why*, do I need to search for my laptop (or my PC, or my friend's phone) via Bluetooth everytime I wish to send them something?

I know it remembers previous devices until the phone is turned off, but it would be great if paired devices, or devices assigned short names, could appear automatically when I try to send something via Bluetooth.

Three wishes:

- RAM: As many have already mentioned, there are many problems due to the low amount of RAM available. Would it be possible to in some way use the miniSD memory to increase the RAM avilable for applications? Even if this is slower and requires me to have a fixed amount of memory on the miniSD card always used for this purpose, it would be very much better than "Out of Memory Error!" all the time.

- Marking of text: On the front of the E70 phone there is a dedicated button for marking - but it will only mark the text which is written by myself(in web forms, messages etc) - and it is not present on the unfolded keyboard, where it is really needed. Some kind of shortcut to this function on the keyboard would be great, and the possibility to mark any text, at least in the included web browser, would be even more great.

- It would be extremely useful to have the option to have an extra line of shortcut icons on the main screen. With the large number of applications and possibilities available on these phones, there is always more than 5 functions/applications that I use regularly..

By the way - thanks for making the E70, which I think is a near perfect device...

Hi,

1) iSync an Mac OS Support
2) The ability to change the font apperance for every Application
3) A more synthetic view of the adress book on the S60 3rd Gen (E61)

Thank's for asking for our input

Posted by: Dominique BAILLON | August 31, 2006 03:37 PM

My three wishes:

1) Improved PIM. This has been detailed already, so I won't add much here. If only the default PIM was as good as the default PalmOS PIM (categories, search...) then it would be much easier for people switching from another platform. Right now, if you want to do some serious PIM, you have to keep a PDA in addition to your smartphone... The Notes application, for instance, looks like a (bad) joke written by a 10 years old kid!

2) A system-wide intelligent connection management. In the mail application, on the E61, you can setup groups with a specific order in which the Nokia will try to connect to internet (WLAN, GPRS, etc.). This is a very good idea, but this group thing isn't available in the web application, for instance, or other connected apps (even in the builtin ones). Whoever designed this phone in Nokia certainly doesn't understand the concept of "teamwork", as all the apps in there seem to be just developped separately or purchased from external developers, maybe, with different interfaces and designs...

So basically you have to chose manually which connection to use each time you want to connect to the net, in every application, otherwise you have to change the preferences on an application-per-application basis depending on your location. Manageable but certainly a pain.

3) Active Standby Plugins. The active standby screen is fine, but as far as I can tell it's completely closed, i.e. developers can't create plugins for it. Too bad as its native customization capabilities are very limited, and yet it's supposed to be the default screen you'll be spending the most time with on your phone's screen!

Posted by: Patrick Robbe | August 31, 2006 04:14 PM

One other thing that is a HUGE gripe with the E-Series devices (E60, E61, and E70) is the absence of easy-to-implement S60 3rd apps that are found on the N-series phones. For example:

-QR Barcode reader not on E70 (despite 2MP camera)
-Flickr upload integration absent on E70 (again, despite 2MP camera)
-Other media-related apps not pre-installed.

While these phones are primarily for a business market, Nokia MUST recognize the appeal of phones like the E61 and E70 for bloggers, and stop crippling them by excluding media-savvy apps and features found on the N-series phones (which, while great for some things, are USELESS for blogging due to the lack of QWERTY).

Free the E-Series!

1) autokeylock
2) connection priorities ie. possibility to automatically connect primarily wlan, if thats not available then gprs and so on
3) timed profiles

Posted by: Mikko Rauhala | September 1, 2006 12:20 AM

- Better Mac support. At least provide an iSync plugin, third party plugins are available that use the Series 60 support that's already in iSync. Also some (minimal) PC Suite functions would be very welcome, i.e. things like Backup. The Mac seems to be very gaining marketshare very quickly.
- XMPP/Jabber support. Would be _awsome_ if that could be integrated into contacts etc but that would be quite a feat :)
- Autokeylock
- Small S40 apps like the countdown timer (ok, that's four requests, I couldn't choose :D).

And please, bring back a Wallet application. I miss something like this

Posted by: Michael Makalkin | September 1, 2006 02:26 PM

Messaging: compact email list option on N series just like on E series (3 email header per screen list is a joke); customizable fields for this list (subscribed IMAP Sent items folder shows To: field, useless)

Sync: Bookmark syncing in the SyncML client

Global: selectable default web browser, clicking on a URL in every app starts the old Services browser

Btw,
MORE free RAM

Posted by: Sebhelyesfarku | September 1, 2006 05:33 PM

Errata: subscribed IMAP Sent items folder list shows From: fields, of course, To: must be there

AHMED

Posted by: KRIDIS AHMED | September 2, 2006 06:17 PM

Ease of use like PalmOS.. less keypress, no unneeded selections.
Better one-page overview (calendar entries, contacts).
Category support for tasks, calendar entries, memos, contacts.
Global search possibility.
Selectable font size for all application. (Now I can see less info on high-res display than on my old Palm's 160x160 screen.)
Select possibilities which fields to show and which not.
More settings for 'Today' screen (ActiveStandby).

So try to make Palm OS interface on Nokia, keeping the multitask and communication power.

Posted by: Attila | September 2, 2006 07:30 PM

1. Keypad autolock without lockcode
2. Recurring alarms
3. Save page in Web
4. Highlight and copy text in Web
5. Sync to Palm Desktop (wishful thinking, I know)
6. Full screen wallpaper
7. Full search functionality
8. Text editor

Posted by: TimKwan | September 3, 2006 01:34 PM

-better notes application (categorization, font...) - like notes on psion!
-Missed alarms handling (like missed calls; and think of using the flashing led for alarms, too)
-calendar improvements (!!)

Posted by: Andro | September 3, 2006 02:37 PM

Oh, one more thing... Music Player: displaying album art from mp3s, no gaps between tracks (at least not with hissing noise) and on the N80 full compatibility with the AD-41 headset (stop/pause/restart on the remote don't work with keypad locked or player in background)

Posted by: Sebhelyesfarku | September 3, 2006 02:58 PM

Top of my list:

A better calendar (with text writing in weekly and monthly view instead of symbols)) and
a search function for the build-in apps (.e. notes, calendar, contacts, to-do, etc)...

The E61 wants to also be a PDA...

Regards, Alexander

Nice post keep it up.

Posted by: mobilephoneextreme | September 6, 2006 08:43 AM

Thing you should implement:
- auto keylock
- screen should be lit when pressing the left selection key, even if the keypad is locked
- timed profiles
- recurring alarms
- fullscreen background picture and ability to change the colors without creating a full theme
- bi-directional sync with sunbird(, thunderbird), google calendar and similar. Outlook is an overkill for a single person and security risk for everyone.
- active stand-by plugins

I can't count, sorry. The S40 phones implement a many of the thing on my list. I know they run on a different kind of platform all together, but they've done those things for years now! You don't need to go too far to copy features, just please please do it in-house at least.

things you should never ever implement:
- "most recent recipients", a list of 10 last people who I've send an message (see S40). This is the single most irritating feature I've ever had to cope with.

Posted by: Jukka | September 7, 2006 08:01 AM

- Improve calendar app (no recurring tasks, no notes for tasks, options for recurring events not very flexible, e.g. no "first Monday of month", alarm for birthday on the day before is impossible, no alarm for notes, no additional description for notes, no list-like week view...)
- Make active standby screen more configurable (e.g. previewing more calendar entries including upcoming birthdays and notes, previewing more tasks...). Half of the screen is usually empty.
- The possibilty to add a TAB-character to a document (obviously either forgotten or extremely well hidden at least in E61)
- Offline browsing of saved web pages

Wish List for S60 3rd Edition (XPress Music)
(e.g. N80, N73, 3250)

1. Album Artwork Display for Music Player
2. Sound Metre, Stereo Widening Feature for Music Player
3. Equalizer for Real Player

I hope Nokia would hear my request. Thank you and more power!

Posted by: RJ Kenobi | September 8, 2006 04:20 AM

Thank you for asking input from the users! Three thing I would like to see changed:

1. Use the connection preferences systemwide. Why can I set an access group as default for the mail application, but I can't with the browser?

2. Better PIM features: use Outlook contact categories as groups for setting ringtones a la Motorola. Have birthday appear in Calander. Add the field 'Tussenvoegsel' for the dutch audience, now I'm losing a part of a persons name...
3. Make the active standby screen more configurable; why can I only see 1 task?

Posted by: Onno | September 11, 2006 02:38 PM

This might sound like a dumb suggestion but after playing with a Helio Kickflip for awhile I came up with the solution that maybe the camera should have an option for watermarking images.

A user can store an image in their gallery to use as a watermark and possibly before saving the image to the web or lifeblog being able to mask the watermark onto the image.

Just a thought.

Darla, that's a great idea! And now Nokia is free to implement it :)

Posted by: Jukka Eklund | September 18, 2006 06:59 PM

Just got one of the new Nokia 5500s, very pleased except for - oh my - three things.

- No automatic keyguard without code
- *Please* make the first name surname thing order system wide, and why not let people use codes like in MS Excel for first initial, second initial, company etc?
- Let me set a message tone then make it silent, just like the ringtone; I want vibrate but no noise but I can't have it! Extend it to email, calender alerts &c. while you're at it...
- I can bind the left and right soft keys, the four points of the d-pad, and the centre-select to whatever I want. Why can't I bind any of them to Menu?
- Fullscreen wallpaper would be very nice.

And a special note for the Nokia 5500 Sport users only:
- It has tapping controls; from the included game Groove labyrinth, it has a pretty damn good tilt sensor in it. Why does it only recognise three actions in normal mode? And, more importantly, why can't I bind gestures to what I want? Let me tap the screen to start the camera, open a text message, switch to sport mode, launch a 3rd party app - or whatever I want. The reading-out-loud thing is a great gimmick, but if you let me bind it to other stuff instead... now you've got a killer app.

Oh, final note: where's my macSaber for 5500, dammit!

Audio recorder to be improved so that can replace stand-alone audio recorders: remove 1' limit, add possibility to choose codec (and increase codecs that can be used), add possibility to choose sampling rate, possibility to use external microphone (bluetooth).

Posted by: Paolo | November 1, 2006 05:27 AM

For my E70 there are, of course, a lot of things to add or change. Lots of them are already mentioned above.

So I will only specify two very small things, very easy to fix, but VERY much impacting my experience:

1) For users, who uses multiple input languages - to select the current input language on per-application basis, not per-device. I use instant messaging with Russian, but my phone book contacts are on English. That is awful. There lots and lots of users with that problem here in Russia.

Plus, i'd like that in Series60v3 there become available API for developers to change current input language. It was available in previous symbians and became absent now, making it impossible to create application which could simplify input language changing.

2) The dedicated "red dot" key activates voice recorder with short press and voice dial with long press. That is not useful. I want this configurable. I use voice dial a lot, I'd like it to be activated with short press. The best implementation of such configurability is to make 'red dot' button configurable from 'standby' menu, and to include 'start voice recording' and 'voice dial' in the available applications list.

Posted by: Dmitry Alergant | November 2, 2006 06:33 PM

Stopwatch/Countdown timer would be really useful. I can't believe there are no free countdown timer apps available for S60V3, and Nokia did not include such a simple application.

Posted by: HH | November 10, 2006 05:08 PM

1. Alarm clock: I definitely agree that multiple alarms would be a great addition, but even more than that, I'd love to have options on the snooze duration. Five minutes is *not* a proper snooze. Also, and I'm sorry to betray my love for sleeping in here, but none of this 30-minute snooze limitation. At *least* an hour, if a limit must be enforced.

2. Threaded SMS: A.k.a. "conversation mode" on the Treo 650 (and I think BBs), and what Gmail offers with e-mail. Helpful when you receive a reply to a text message you sent hours ago-- with threaded SMS, you don't have to dig through your "Sent" folder to see what your initial message said.

3. Better use of the e-mail LED: (I have an E61) Why limit its functionality to e-mail? Give us options to use it to notify us of missed calls, new SMS, new voicemail, etc. There are 3rd-party apps for the Treo 650 that do this for the status light.

3b. Or if not that, how about a setting for a continuous audio alert for notifications?

P.S.: Better Mac support (actually, Mac support, period) would be fantastic. Currently, there are workarounds, but a lot of people who choose S60 smartphones do so *because* they're not running on Windows Mobile-- i.e., we're not Windows fans, i.e., we probably use Macs.

-copy link address function in browser
-goto position function (to % of sound file, or to time position in hh:mm format) in player for large files (longer than 30 min)

Posted by: paul | November 22, 2006 12:27 AM

Nokia 5500d Sport:
- Why, oh why there is a 1 minute limit for voice recording?!?!?!? I have 2 GB memory card, but guess what...... maximum of 1 minute for voice recording. Is this a bussiness decision in order for people to pay more money on special devices for voice recording?? That's LOW!
- I dumped 1.3 GB of music in a folder on the memcard. Problems: There is no way to specify how the playlist (All tracks) is sorted(i.e: by path and filename both togeter)

Posted by: catalin | December 11, 2006 03:12 PM

Improved calendar:

- One should be able to specify default behaviours (like on a Nokia 9300). One could e.g. specify all meetings should have a reminder (alarm).

- Improved reminders (alarm) for meetings.
* An option which makes the phone beep only once. (If the reminder is not dismissed, the phone keeps on beeping).
* The snooze time should be selectable.
* Ability to open the calendar entry which triggered the alarm.

Ability to control the profiles (meeting, silent, etc.) from the calendar would be very nice.

Posted by: Erik S | December 18, 2006 10:04 PM

1. Font size on E50 - way too small in some cases (e.g. mesg inbox)
2. Autolock without security code
3. Birthday category in Calendar
4. First Name, Last Name view everywhere consistently
5. Stopwatch
6. Cell info display does not work in E50

Posted by: Abhijeet | January 5, 2007 03:03 PM

1) Profiles should consist more options (BT,wlan, screen brightness, stand-by mode settings) not just only the ringtones. And because of these multiple choises I'd like to use the #-button to just silence the phone and not for switching the whole profile. (about the idea in Finnish: http://erkka.vuodatus.net/blog/405478)

2) Ability to show a list of last created/used files in stand-by -view would be great. Or the inbox or latest RSS-feed headlines (a RSS-screensaver would be cool too).

3) Ability to make shortcuts to any application, file, folder or function via buttons or links would be handy. Now I can get a gallery shortcut in stand-by mode, but I really would like it to take me straight to the photo folder. And while you're at it, could I use the 1-9 -buttons for speed-dialing and also as application shortcuts?

4) Voice dialing is awesome. Ability to dial by just saying any name in address book enables true hands-free calling. But there should also be a voice command to cancel the call if name was pronounced wrong. And if the phone already knows how to read the names in the addressbook aloud, why there's no option to read the recieved messages aloud too? Could be a handy option while driving a car.. or not, but would be cool.

5) I want to chance the default inputs in the calendar. Most of my meetings start at 1 PM and I always want a reminder 30 min before. Now defaults are 8.00 AM , remider off and when chosen the setting is only 15 minutes.

Thanks for listening :)

Posted by: erkka | February 17, 2007 05:44 PM

1) Display keyboard shortcut in popup menu (Nokia 6110 navigator in-built navigation software has this feature) and being able to use keyboard shortcut while popup menu is opened.

2) Synchronisation with Thunderbird email client and lightning/Sunbird calendar client and in the Nokia music manager please add some mechanism to touch up or automatically add album art to sound track (It is such pain to fix up this album art stuff manually, the software should deal with this directly and add some fancy way to flick through album/song collection like the """iPhone""")

3) Continue to improve Web browser Web 2.0 support and memory usage

Sorry need to add one more!
4) More fancy screen savers please.........

Posted by: scl77 | July 3, 2007 04:31 AM

1. Allow upgrading of OS Version and feature packs.
2. More menu views like n77
3. Time features, eg the recurrent alarm, stopwatch, timer.
Sorry, 2 more.
4. Active standby screen customizable like the eseries phones, would like to see missed calls, new sms/mms/email.
5. Ultra-fast startup time. (think symbian os 9.5)

Posted by: Rs | July 14, 2007 10:48 AM

...

- Make folders under folders in menu.
- Users can change any icons in menu.
- Make shorcuts for any .txt; .jpg... to display in menu - like windows on desktop.
- Speed-up menu and options(my old amiga on 8mhz is faster than 220mhz small screen phone!?!)
- bluetooth auto-off timeout
- MORE RAM MEMORY!!!!!! ( ...64mb free;) )
- + Virtual memory support like windows( no more app close - memory full!)
...and other stuff

But nothing about this to happend... :(

Active standby screen customizable on my 6110 like - eseries phones, need to see emails!

Posted by: Chris | August 1, 2007 04:15 PM

Easy!
I "upgraded" from an S40 (6255i) phone to S60 3rd (N75). I love my N75, but I was very dissapointed at how some of the handiest standard features of my old out of date phone were missing from my new shiny state of the art smartphone.

1) TIMED PROFILES. How hard can that be? I think even the lowly 1100 has that standard.

2) Coundown Timer. I know it's available as PAYWARE, but shouldn't have to buy it. It's standard on almost any s-40 phone made in the last 3-4 years. It's the greatest thing for timing lunch breaks, steaks on the grill...etc.

3) A torch! Press and hold the * Key for 2 sec..the flash LED comes on for 30-60 sec (timed so as not to damage the LED or Phone). Who couldn't use a light when they're in a dark restaurant, trying to read the menu, or to read the programme in a dark theater, or when you drop your keys in the floorboard of the car at night, or trying the find the light switch in a dark room.....

The alarm could be better (like on my old s40 phone) but at least I got one, and I only get 3 wishes.

Posted by: Karl | September 4, 2007 03:41 AM

As already stated several times above, I would like to see a 3rd party calendar support in S60 phones. We need a proper (and easy!) way to sync the phone's calendar with internet calendars like Google or Yahoo Calendar. Vcal support would do the thing, don't you think?

Also, more of a hardware request: My phone runs out of RAM too often, a little bit more of it wouldn't hurt us :)

Kiitos sulle Tommi!

Posted by: Peter | September 23, 2007 09:57 AM

Ok, since other went to 5 and 6 points, i'll go for only two, but important ones!

- Birthdays in calender! how obvious is this? used it in my old 6100, and these smartphones cant do this? no way!

- Much more control on font size in contacts and everywhere, really. My dad liked the phone, but he can't see the contact list, even when font is set to large. maybe enable different contacts views, like one with number, or three per page, or something.

really hoping to see these implemented.

ok, i have a third point:

- Large clock as screensaver...

Thanks!

I am also disappointed about the intuitivity of the S60 interface in the Nokia N73 compared to the S40 interface in the Nokia 6230. It seems like the S60 has forgotten about the basic functionality and only focus about putting in new fancy stuff. The most important points to improve:
1) AUTO KEYLOCK (like the S40 series)
2) CALLING HISTORY: Missed and called numbers with timestamp and duration. Also if somebody (is) called several times I want to see a list with timestamp and duration. Also a list with timestamps if somebody has called and the call is missed.
3) Indeed the agenda/calendar functionality. The birthday, reoccuring events, etc. For example the birthday of a contact should show up automaticly in the calendar. The alarm should be of .
At the time I am very sad that I bought the Nokia N73 and not the Nokia 6233 (my sister has bought that one) with the S40 interface. My next phone will not be a Nokia if all Nokia's use the current S60 interface.

- Stopwatch/timer should be included as default (my OLD Sony Ericsson T610 had them 4 years ago, and that was not even a "smartphone")

- Ability to change font size and style (bold/normal ) systemwide (and that includes built-in Help: the current font sizes in Help are practically unreadable on a 2 inch display at QVGA resolution)

- the built in FM radio should be allowed to operate without the mobile network, in offline mode. (Does anybody know WHY is it currently required to be connected to a GSM/3G network to use an FM radio?)

Posted by: Tamás | November 19, 2007 06:53 PM

I have a lot of notes, but I'll write down some most importants:
1)Fix bags in music player(ex. I can't see sometime recent songs)
2)Flash sms&sms with smiles
3)remove (or improve)unneedable apps,sach as IM,Lifeblog,3D Tones,Modem
allso recurrent alarm, timers, fullscreen caller image, fullscreen background, and important: to see phone numbers in call log,not only contact names!
