Update Nokia Firmware yourself: Over-the-Air or via PC
Finally!!
Go and check out: http://www.nokia.co.uk/softwareupdate
I’m sure many people, such as Niko, will appreciate this.
Michal Jerz reports at My-Symbian:
Currenty the service only supports Series 60 2.x smartphones (N70, N72, 6630, 6680, 6681/82) but support for S60 3rd Edition phones is coming soon.
You can find more commentary at All About Symbian and Symbian-Freak.
Although the compatibility table is not perfect yet, this is good news. Please spread the word.

Tommi you have made my day!!!! AWESOME!!
You know… it would be nice if they could also incorporate this into PC Suite as well.
What about Mac OS X or Linux update clients. Looks like Nokia developers have heard about only Windoze.
Sebhelyesfarku: well, that sucks. But sometimes you have to prioritize, and I think putting the current solution available is way better than nothing.
Let’s just hope the S60 3rd ed. version is coming soon, my N80 is begging for a firmware update..
Great news. Hope to see the 3rd Edition updates soon. Thank you!
I’m pretty sure N90 is a 2nd edition phone =/
Nokia hasn’t published the deployment schedule, so I think I can’t comment the date when the support for N90 and S60 3rd edition devices becomes available. Sorry.
Should be soon enough - I’ll let you know…
Ciao,
I cannot find information on what the firmware upgrade will fix, like a log of fixes, any ideas?
Alessandro
@Vegard,
Apparently the program recognizes the N80. Someone posted a comment on my blog that they updated theirs. I’m not sure if I would recommend doing this though until its officially supported.
I think 3rd Edition support is essential especially when you consider the amount of issues the new 3rd Edition Devices have. Lets hope it’ll be added soon! The N80 has just had a huge firmware upgrade that I’d really like to have.
Anyway my 2 cents can be found here: http://www.tarekesber.com/?p=44
Tommi, how about publishing protocol specifications for doing updates over USB, so that the Linux community can write their own program?
I’ve just checked out the update software, and it does not provide any information about an update at all, just whether it’s available or not. What is the firmware version? When it was released? Which new features are introduced, which bugs were fixed?
Nokia should really be more honest about its products and also problems that they have.
Not everyone is too dumb to understand that kind of info
Well - how about putting together a wiki for that kind of stuff? If Nokia does not do it, then the users themselves could do it… Now that the updates are available, it should be a lot easier to do user community support.
wiki for firmware changes sounds very good…
Many thanks for your comments. I’ll ask about publishing the protocols for Linux community…
About the wiki idea, I like it.
I couldn’t resist, tried updating my N80, and get told (as expected) that there are no updates available.
I’m still waiting for N93 updates to be available again. My N93 has that famous memory leak that doesn’t let me watch long videos on the phone or on tv
