My favorite applications (so far) for S60 3rd Edition

3rd party S60 applications - June 8th, 2006 - Written by Tommi Vilkamo

Hi folks, time to write a recap about the state of S60 3rd Edition.

By now, two and half months have passed since the first device based on S60 3rd Edition started shipping. Let’s look what has happened since:
- The first 3rd party app was launched almost immediately
- Nokia has started shipping seven devices (3250, N71, N80, N91, E60, E61, E70), and five more probably start shipping soon (E50, 5500 Sport, N73, N92, N93)
- Despite some initial challenges, the application catalogue for S60 3rd edition is starting to gather momentum. And here comes my heavily biased list of personal favorites.

Tommi’s 10 favorite Nokia apps / built-in functionality (in brutal order of importance)
1. Out-of-the-box experience / First-Use Experience
2. OSS Browser
3. MTP - Music synch with Windows Media Player
4. Mobile Search
5. Voice UI (= voice commands + text-to-speech) - the technology bits and pieces are finally here, meaning that the fun has just started :-) 6. Barcode reader - I believe this will be big in the near future
7. Nokia Business Center
8. Lifeblog
9. Internet Radio - would you like us to integrate this into Nokia S60 devices with WLAN?
10. Nokia Catalogs - not perfect yet, but I think we have tremendous potential here…

Tommi’s 10 favorite 3rd party apps (not in any particular order)
- Flash Lite stuff in general, I believe this will be big in the near future
- Screen Shot 2.0 by Antony Pranata
- Smart Movie by Lonely Cat Games
- ProfiMail by Lonely Cat Games
- Mobile Search by Odendahl SEPT-Solutions
- Handy Tools by Epocware
- Best Taskman by Smartphoneware
- Hotspot finder by Psiloc
- C2Doom (beta) by Markus Mertama
- Agile Messenger (beta) by Agilemobile

Naturally, the 3rd party application catalogue for S60 2.x devices is still much better. But as Michal Jerz said:

Regarding the availability of S60 3rd Edition software, just give developers some time guys. It’s been only two weeks since the date of your comment Symbiatch and the number of apps listed on My-Symbian has jumped from “about two dozen” to 50…

So please be patient, we are getting there. I believe that all the popular apps will be ported to S60 3rd Edition by the end of this year, and that we will see many remarkable new ones (such as Skype?) quite soon…

Now, which applications did I forget? Which ones are your favorites?

Yes please! The UI needs some work (maybe you can integrate it into the music player app?), but it’s definitely a cool feature to have.

Well, I’m still waiting for Dominique to solve his problems and come back with FExplorer 3rd edition…

Also, I would like that S60 allow us to choose an image to put as operator logo…

Internet Radio, definitely yes! But should be it “inside” (Visual) Radio? Or maybe both.

Tommi, thanks for including my application (Screenshot for Symbian OS) as one of your favorite third party applications… :)

I can’t believe you listed the OSS browser as the second item. To me it is a huge chunk of a good work thrown in a completely wrong direction. It can’t normally display even the default E61 page.

Have you ever used Opera for Mobile? Opera and OSS browser is like day and night. They are simply in the different league

Wow, seeing my application Mobile Search in this list by someone who has seen so many applications makes me feel proud and happy.

    Thanks a lot!

I’d would chosen as my favorite 3rd party app: sexplorer. It’s so obvious that I must think you forget it.
I also like google maps, and adobe pdf reader.

Great list! Internet radio definitely needs to be integrated into future S60 devices. Integrating into Music player would be great with better bookmark handling.

Just stumpled over the N91 podcast app from Nokia yesterday at

works great. Allows me to download podcasts straight to the N91 via my home wlan connection :-)
