« Where to find apps for S60 3rd Edition? My-Symbian! | Main | Comeks - a fancy comic strip creator for S60 »
Phil called me today and warned me that he was just about to update our S60.com blog templates. Now they have been updated, and I think it looks pretty good!
How do you like our new layout yourself?
In particular, how do you like the new blog header that they designed for me?
I kind of like it, although I'm a little unsure about the size of the ice-cube and the *bling-bling* effects. The ice-cube itself is fine, as it is the same that we have in the logo of the unit I work for in Nokia (=NSS).
Comments
1. Not bad
2. Header is tooo big. I can see only 4 lines of this blog post without scrolling. And the post content is the main focus here, isn't it?
3. Comparing to the old layout, the "Links", "Subscribe", etc. sections take much more space. I.e. "supplementary" features, useless most of the time take space and focus from the post
Posted by: Artem | May 21, 2006 07:56 PMArtem, thanks for the feedback! Which resolution are you using? I think I use quite resolution, and when designing this I sometimes forget that not everyone is using 1280x1024 or higher! :-)
About the size of sidebar, I made it that big because I have plans to put some nice new components in there that will require the large width - but I haven't implemented them yet. Stay tuned :-)
Posted by: Phil | May 21, 2006 10:50 PMMaybe I didn't emphasize it well enough, but the main part of my opinion is "not bad". All the other points relate to the minor details.
1. My home PC resolution is 1024x768. AFAIK, it's rather standard for 17'' displays.
2. Nice future components for the sidebar exaplain why such a wide sidebar is needed :)
3. I still believe that having two header on the same site takes too much space. And both your headers (S60 and "ommi's Blog") are quite wide.
Posted by: Artem | May 21, 2006 11:13 PMAh, actually there is one thing in the new design that I really don't like. I just didn't notice it earlier.
The "Remember personal info?" checkbox doesn't work, every time I comment I have to enter all the data from scratch.
Posted by: Artem | May 21, 2006 11:15 PMHi
I like it. the blogs now seem all belonging to one. Before, it was like having several blogs independant.
good job
Posted by: Alexandre Silva | May 22, 2006 12:39 PMI think it is nice that it has been integrated into the new look S60.com
The header might be a bit big, but I mainly read via RSS so it's not a big deal (and the clear header is good for first time users).
I like wider widebars with extra info, looking forward to see what you are cooking up for the side bar.
Posted by: Rafe | May 22, 2006 01:23 PMThanks. I'll ask them to make the header(s) a little smaller.
> The "Remember personal info?" checkbox doesn't work
It seems to be a bug. I hope somebody can fix it asap. Sorry for inconvenience.
Posted by: Tommi Vilkamo | May 22, 2006 02:28 PMI have to admit Tommi, it looks pretty good, although I was little surprised and confused with new layout this morning but now I can say that I like your and other S60 blogs more than before ;)
Oh yes, new header graphic, nice work indeed, congratulations to S60 design/graphic department, also I haven’t problems with the header size, it fits perfect on 21” Sony G series :D
And last but not the least I agree with you Artem, personal info disappearing is quite tedious issue :/
Cheers,

1. The comments are REALLY LARGE in Safari for some reason.
2. You need to set the tabindex of the form fields. The tab order goes from the security code to the search field all the way on the top, then the "Name:" field.
Posted by: dthree | May 26, 2006 05:44 AMAgree with dthree. The comments font is even bigger (and bolder) than the blog post headline! Tabindex would be nice as well. Headers are way too big, but I guess that's in fashion right now. ;)
The sidebars are nice, surprisingly the colored text makes them less distracting for my eye, which is good. They only need to attract the eye when actually looking for something else than the content.
