November 11, 2005 Freeware mania Posted by Tommi at 10:23 AM | Categories: 3rd party S60 applications

Before getting down to business, thanks for everybody who has sent me feedback - both private and public. As you know, I am taking my first baby steps into blogosphere, and I will greatly appreciate any feedback that helps me to the right track.

I was contacted yesterday by Simon Judge (check out his blog), and he raised a valid point about S60 freeware:

"Freeware doesn't tend to get much press as there's no incentive for the 'Handango' affiliates to promote them. Hopefully, your site will be more independent."

As I told Simon, I am a big fan of freeware and other interesting stuff that for some reason won't get official press visibility from Handango, operators, Nokia etc. So I am glad if I can help increasing the visibility of freeware in my blog. Now that Nokia has announced last month the Symbian Signed Freeware Route to Market, I hope the S60 freeware ecosystem will stay alive, live long, and prosper.

But I would need a little help from you here. Let's try to list the best freeware applications, and the best freeware sites where to find them. I know a few, but I'm sure you know the freeware scene much better than I do.

My personal top-3 favorite freeware applications are: FExplorer, Oggplay, and Symella (don't try this at home unless you have a flat-fee plan, or a generous employer paying your data bills...) Which ones are your favorites?

Here are a couple of good places to start looking:

Update 14 Nov: (thanks Steve!)

My TOP-5 favourite freeware S60 applications are:

Autolock - automatic keypad lock with timing (mm:ss), runs in the background.

FExplorer - a freeware file manager.

Putty - an open source SSH client, allows me to e.g. reboot my home server. Works best on S80 devices (thanks to 640 x 200 pixels UI).

ZScreenCapture - screenhots without compression from S60, a must have for manuals, product demos, press articles etc.

FIVN Player - a freeware AAC and MP3 player for S60, I prefer the UI compared to many others.

I also used Agile Messenger instant messaging client for many years, but it's no longer freeware, and I didn't quite understand what kind of pricing they want to have.

I have to add it's not quite true that freeware applications don't get any press attention. I read several IT magazines in Finland, UK and the U.S. and they have introduced freeware and open source stuff too.

Large download sites like CNET Downloads already have mobile and PDA categories, but their Symbian offerings are quite modest at the moment.

It seems the U.S. press don't know Symbian platforms very well yet, they're more familiar with traditional Palm OS and Pocket PC sofware.

Since there were no games mentioned, I thought Frozen Bubble would be good to bring up. Try it, its addictive (don't blame me if you don't put down your phone the next couple of days).

Hey Tommi, just wanted to let you know that there is an update to FExplorer.

SymbianOne seems to have added a freeware directory:

Wireless18 - Free Golf Scorecard for mobile phones Agree with it being hard to advertise free applications. We had had to remove our application from a number of sites since we went free

Does anyone know of a freeware app to keep track of footy tournaments, like the World Cup? It should be like one of those wallcharts you get in the newspaper (or here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2006/printable_wallchart/default.stm ).

You should be able to see teams in the stages, and enter the scores after the match, and it works out the groups and the knockout stages too.

All I can find is this, which only shows when the matches are playing.

If there's not one there, then consider this a 76 day challenge! Why not make one yourself!

It shouldn't be very hard to do, and would be cool to be able to add a data file for future tournaments like Euro 2008 or the World Cup 2010 etc.
