Podcast #40: Aron Kozak on Qt

Podcast - November 6th, 2008 0 comments - Written by Saara Bergström

A couple of days ago I was very happy to have a chat with Aron Kozak from Qt to talk about what they do at Qt Software. Like many of you already know Nokia announced the porting of Qt to S60 a couple of weeks ago.

If you are interested in learning more about Qt, an early technical preview of Qt for S60 is available for download from Qt Software website. The first production release of Qt [...]

Enhancing the security prompting for Java apps

Java - October 22nd, 2008 9 comments - Written by Aleksi Uotila

We have been working on enhancing the security prompts in S60 Java for some time (actually quite a long time for that matter). Nearly always the Java application security prompts are an annoyance in user’s perspective. When using applications that go beyond the very basic things and would use more of the Java Runtime provided APIs users need to consecutively keep accepting all sorts of security prompts. This means that application’s user experience is ruined as the UI flow [...]

Enriched application development with Qt for S60

S60 news - October 20th, 2008 0 comments - Written by Saara Bergström

Just a few minutes ago Qt Software announced the porting of Qt to S60 on Symbian OS. Qt is a cross-platform C++ application development framework, which makes it easy for developers to create applications once and then deploy them on any of the Windows, Mac, Linux, Windows CE, Windows Mobile and embedded Linux platforms. With the inclusion of the S60 platform, developers have an additional 80 million target devices that can support with their Qt-based applications.

Scalable icons for Java apps

Java - October 2nd, 2008 0 comments - Written by Aleksi Uotila

In our 3rd edition FP2 new features list I mentioned the Scalable icon support for Java applications.

Java MIDP specification mandates only the support of PNG icons from a device implementation. Nokia Java implementations have thus far supported only bitmap based icon formats, most notably PNG, GIF and JPEG files. Vector graphics based scalable icons provide a lot of benefits over bitmap icons.

The application icons are used in many contexts in S60 device user interface. The normal application menu is [...]

David Sparks from the Interop Blog visited our booth and got his face (well, just a photo of it) thrown on the wall. Jürgen Scheible aka Mobilenin, a researcher, music and media artist, is the guy behind this neat MobiSpray app. MobiSpray allows light-based painting by using a mobile phone as spray can. With only a phone and a surface you can paint anywhere, anytime on anything.

The spray-painting follows your hand gestures in [...]

Calling all Innovators (including super-genius Dean Kamen)!

S60 events - September 18th, 2008 2 comments - Written by Saara Bergström

Forum Nokia’s “Calling All Innovators” contest, which is now open for submissions, could have you S60 developers seeing green in more ways than one.

First, there’s the green that helps the planet: your mission is to create an application that can benefit society at-large.

Next, there’s the lucrative kind of green: up to USD $150,000 in cash and prizes, along with access to official Nokia channels for app distribution.

And finally, there’s the green your skin will turn [...]
