Wake up, it’s your favourite song

S60 basics - June 25th, 2007 - Written by left_blank

Somehow, I find mornings a little less painful if I’m waking up to something that makes me happy. In the absence of a train of well-mannered and beautiful servants feeding me breakfast in bed, I guess it’s enough to set a good song as my alarm tone on my phone.

Basically, all you have to do is pick your morning melody and transfer it to your S60 device, using Bluetooth, USB cable, infrared, or by downloading it off the web if you’re so inclined. Even if your phone doesn’t have an MP3 player application or a whole lot of memory, it’s still possible. Check for “MP3 ringing tones” or “alarm tones” in your phone’s technical specifications if you’re unsure. Once your tune is uploaded, it should be accessible from the Gallery application, built-in to the device. Go to the clock application and change the alarm tone to your MP3.

The other thing about using MP3s as alarm tones is, because you’re not going to be using headphones, the sound quality doesn’t have to be world-class. So when you transfer the song to your phone, you can make the file a lot smaller than you would if you were putting it on your MP3 player. If you want sound quality of course, knock yourself out with a big file, but if your phone doesn’t have so much internal memory, this can be a useful trick.

Just a word of warning: after a number of rough 6:30 AM starts, you might start to have mixed feelings about that song. I can’t listen to Roisin Murphy’s “Sow into you” without wanting to hit the snooze button.

So true about starting to associate much loved songs with horrible early morning wakeups.

I’ve ruined two songs for myself by using them as ringtone specifically for a group (difficult clients who I needed to prepare for mentally before answering) and by using the other as alarm as you’ve described.

Lesson from it: Pick a throwaway pop song, something you don’t think you’d be listening to 6 months down the line anyways! That way you won’t feel so bad about the association.

Well, I sort of agree on how a song might become unbearable after using it a couple of times as an alarm, but hey, you can’t wake up to a bad song either (unless you REALLY want to press that STOP button). Actually, what I have encountered recently during my exams period, is that I end up waking a couple of minutes before my alarm starts ringing. Quite weird. Everytime I set my alarm at 5:30 am and I end up Stopping it the second it starts ringing. So basically, whatever the song, I don’t have that much prob with it. But a couple of months ago, I used a french song by Johnny Hallyday as a morning jogging alarm, I ended up hating it. Now I’m back to loving the song.
So as a conclusion to this LOOOOONG comment, I should say: pick a song that you genuinely like, use it as a ringtone for a week, then change it. You will have to sacrifice the song for a couple of months (cuz u’ll hate it), but after a few months, your hatred will die and you’ll be able to use that song again… Quite interesting.

No matter what song is to be loaded as alarm tone in the Symbian phone, the purpose is to wake us up. And wake up on time make me feel good.
