« What is this S60 thing, anyway?!? | Back to blog | Jaiku: the thing to do (when everyone else is, at least) »
I've noticed lately that I've been using my cameraphone as a kind of notebook, especially when I'm in a hurry. Running from work to rehearsal to the swimming hall is a lot easier when you know the public transport schedules (if you're carless like me), especially for the specific stops you tend to use. So I end up snapping a picture with my phone, because I know I'll always have my phone with me and can just look at the picture later. Here's an example from the 1A tram line in Helsinki—the text comes out clear as a bell, even the fine print. This was taken with a Nokia E50, which has a 1.3-megapixel camera.
But I've also found that taking pictures of flyers is useful—concerts, announcements for yoga classes, pretty much anything I see posted around town. I've even taken pictures of clothing while shopping (including the price tag) so when I go back to the first shop of the day to get the shirt I really wanted all along, it hasn't been made cheaper in my wishful thinking memory. Maybe if I take pictures of my keys often enough, I'll remember where those are, too.

Couldn't agree more. I find myself taking shots of the covers of books I'd like to read, and capturing the names of artists I'd like to see more work from. Looking forward to upgrading my trusty 6600 to get better images though.
The text generated by qipit is also useful. Interesting service.
Nice bolg.

Hahaha, that's the way I'm using the bus stations' schedule on my phone, to know in which station should I take another bus, or how long I must wait.
Posted by: Ratza | June 8, 2007 08:17 AMTimothy, I've also done the book thing! Especially since most of the books I want are really expensive at the book shops here in Helsinki, I tend to take pictures of them and look them up on Amazon later.
Thanks for the qipit tip. I'll check it out.
Posted by: Johanna | June 8, 2007 10:50 AMI did similiar thing when I was buying a printer last winter. I went from one shop to another and took shots of the printers + tech. specifications to easily remember which printer in which shop is the best. And I did it as well with Nokia E50 ;). Its 1.3 MPix camera is perfectly enough for this.
Nice blog, already subscribed :)
Posted by: Jaro | June 8, 2007 02:03 PMI've noticed many journalists take pictures of PowerPoints and other presentation slides. Often you aren't sure if slides will be immediately available, so it's best to capture the most important ones while they're shown.
Posted by: Tero Lehto | June 10, 2007 03:54 PMLol I've found myself taking pics when I go shopping of certain outfits. That way when I get home I can see if I have shoes and accessories to match.
I've also taken pics of furniture when I redid my living room to get a better visual of how things would look.
Posted by: Darla | June 11, 2007 05:42 AMI need to confess that I've even used my cameraphone to snap a secret picture of something that my wife has been admiring before her birthday. Not very romantic I agree. But this way you get an excellent shopping list for presents. Gents, free tip for us all to use ;-)
Posted by: Antti | June 11, 2007 09:46 AMI use my camera phone to snap images of maps.
Train stations and such often post a map of the station's neighborhood so if I am going somewhere for the first time, and not too sure about how to find my way from the station, I try to locate a map and snap an image of it.
Once I have left the station, I then use the map image to find my way.
One could of course just ask for directions, but that is very un-manly
Posted by: Chris | June 11, 2007 01:20 PMYou're all geniuses! Howcome I've never thought of that?? In particular, bus times at the local stop or maps when going into a new area of London where I'm walking around like a lost puppy...
If you don't mind, I'll blog this later, simple yet clever :)
Posted by: Vero | June 11, 2007 04:33 PMThat's a great use and justification for the camera phone. You always hear how useful it is for crime (accident) scene photos or in catching people in compromising situations. Here is a very real constructive use. I'll have to remember to pull out my phone when reading poster announcements or comparing prices.
Posted by: Marion | June 11, 2007 11:56 PMThanks for the mentions, these are all great. Chris, I've also turned to my phone for maps, especially when travelling. I realied when I was in Poland that I'd never be able to remember the street names, and I happened to be without a city map at the time, but they always have these great "you are here" tourist maps near stations.
