Hi See into S60 blog readers! My name is David Rivas and I head up S60 Technology Management. I hope that you noticed the news we announced today together with many other industry players, about setting up an independent and open foundation to create one open and unified mobile software platform which will build on Symbian OS and S60, with selected UIQ and MOAP(S) technologies integrated.
This is great news, we are all very excited as we believe this will bring even more innovation, applications and services to the devices, as well as even more appealing devices to the market with these technologies. Given the tremendous changes going on in the market place today, I believe that this exactly the evolutionary path that we should all be on. Please check out symbianfoundation.org for further details!

Sounds really good!
Does it also mean that companies like Nokia will allow OS upgrades like MS does. I mean, is there a chance to get an FP1 or FP2 upghrade on an FP0 device like the E70 as a result of this move?
Or the software will be free but devices will remain jailed?
I do not know how many of You in Symbian technology management see the writing on the wall (looking at Apple Google and MS) that upgradable operating systems are the only way to the future... meaning a path through FP-s...
Thank You and Best regards!

Great news.
Now when Symbian becomes open, maybe it's time for Nokia to implent support for other open formats? Been waiting to see Ogg Vorbis support in the default Nokia music player for years now.
Posted by: Fredrik | June 24, 2008 05:07 PMThat's a good strategic move considering the Google Android on way...! Until then, Symbian still Rocks..!!
Posted by: Gomcoite | June 24, 2008 05:32 PMI would like to appologize for being so short sighted in the previous comment!
I just noticed that Symbian goes open source.
This is huge and it is the only good move against Android.
Thank You Nokia and All participants in this change!
Regarding the E70 I still belive that it is a hidden revolution, and a mistake to abandon...

Free?
Well, this mean "free to everyone who paid big $$$$ to foundation" or "free. sources to OS lies on public ftp/(or at least easily available to developers, perhaps with current SDK)"
Also, upgrade issue is still interesting
