April 08, 2008 A tip for storing numbers: hotel room, taxi order etc. Posted by Esa at 01:25 PM | Categories: Hints & Tips

When ordering a taxi, the operator gives me a number (usually three digits) so that know which taxi is for me. It's essential information but needed only for max 10-15 minutes. As I have a bad memory, I make a call to that number and immediately hang-up. This way, the number is available in my made calls should I need it. No need for pen and paper. Works also for storing hotel room numbers etc. Any other tips for doing this?

What a GREAT tip! Thanks.

I hope the number isn't 112 (or 999, or 911, or other local equivalent...)

Sure :)
Any number I should remember for more then 1 min and don't have in email or sent by SMS goes in my call log :) But you must be quick when dialing and hanging-up or you might get call back :)

I do this for all sorts of things, reservation numbers for products I've ordered online to collect in store, or for ISBN numbers of books I've seen in store that I want to check out online, etc. As each individual number can be deleted from the call history it doesn't make it look too messy either.

Funny, I have been using the same trick for a long time too :)

That sounds the quickest way.
* Create a message, save as a draft.
* Create a note in Notes.
* Create a note in Lifeblog.
* Save it as a temporary contact, or in the taxi contact.

The more I think about it, the more convinced I become that touch screen devices should have a widget space on the home screen that does nothing but store whatever you scribble on the screen until you press delete.

I suppose this idea is not really limited to touch devices. Select the virtual post-it whatever you want to call it item from your home screen (similar as the flickr and ovi ones), type, done.

i thought i was the only one who did that.

Great known tip, but it was good to spread:-).
The S60 team should blog more about some important things like new N82 firmware, which was released today. Just my 2 cents.

horia - Thanks for your feedback. We indeed are planning to write about the firmware update.

I use it to note down my water/electric/gas meter, and loads of other stuff besides.

Like Stefan, I thought I was the only one who did this!

Well...I just take a picture.

When I hit the airport parking lot, running like mad 'cause I'm late for the flight, and I know I'll never remember where I parked the car 'cause I was at the airport last week, and the week before that...etc.

Same with hotel room numbers, and wine bottle labels, restaurant addresses (on the menu)...
