March 27, 2008 Lights off at the Nokia headquarters Posted by Saara at 01:20 PM | Categories: Commentary

We at Nokia care about the environment and conserving energy is very important. Nokia is joining millions of people around the world on March 29th to support EarthHour by turning off all the lights in the Nokia headquarters in Espoo and other selected sites for one hour.

Given the expansive growth of mobile communications, it is important for us here at Nokia to minimize our global environmental impact. We see the environment as being everyone’s responsibility. We are doing our bit through better product design, closer control of production processes, greater material reuse and recycling as well as incorporating sustainable practices and environmentally conscious planning.

March 20, 2008 And the winner of the S60 quiz is... Posted by Saara at 02:30 PM | Categories: Quiz

Well, first of all thanks for participating to the first quiz on S60 Blogs! I'm glad about the amount of replies. The right answers are:

D - 6 devices were launched in MWC 2008 in Barcelona: Nokia N96, Nokia N78, Nokia 6210 Navigator, Nokia 6220 Classic, LG-KT610 and Samsung SGH-G810.

B - 4 of the devices (Nokia's) are S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2.

B - The difference between S60 Editions and Feature Packs is that Editions contain major improvements and architectural changes, while Feature Packs are used to introduce new features on top of this main edition architecture.

C - In S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2, you can start Java applications directly after the installation process.

D - Connectivity UI in S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 allows all the three first choices: access point grouping, access point priorization inside group and automatic utilization of access points.

A - Timed profile in S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 means that a selected profile can be activated for a defined time period.

From the total of 122 answers, 71 were right. The drawing of the winner was done in a very old fashioned way - from my hat! If this quiz will become a tradition, I'll try to figure out a more sophisticated way to do this if I'll do this again. Below's proof of my prize drawing process:

And the winner is ... Adel! Congrats! I will contact you by email soon. Thanks again for all who participated.

Put yourself in someone else's shoes - Nokia supports Pangea Day Posted by Saara at 08:23 AM | Categories: Commentary

PangeaDay_small.jpgFrom time to time it is important to view the world through someone else's eyes. Pangea Day connects people by harnessing the power of film and encouraging people to view the world through someone else’s eyes. Nokia is supporting Pangea Day by inviting everyone to enter the 2008 Nokia Mobile Filmmaking Awards by creating and submitting their short videos to www.ovi.com/pangeaday.

These videos will be considered for inclusion in the first Pangea Day broadcast event on May 10, 2008. If you register, you can also vote to select five finalists, who will have their videos screened during the Pangea Day broadcast and win a trip to the live Pangea Day broadcast location in Los Angele. So, be sure to make use of your S60 devices!

Pangea Day taps the power of film to strengthen tolerance and empathy while uniting millions of people to build a better future. Created by award-winning documentary filmmaker Jehane Noujaim in collaboration with the TED Conferences, Pangea Day's mission is to create a worldwide network of caring and concerned citizens who will make a difference.

Nokia N82 in blackThis one I really gotta have! This jet black multimedia computer enables you to geotag the images you capture with the date and location info. The device automatically tags images with capture location metadata, making it possible to view the capture location on a map either on the Internet or on the device itself. This adds to a line-up of compelling photography features, including a 5 megapixel camera, Carl Zeiss optics and a Xenon flash. Not only does the Nokia N82 take great pictures, array of advanced connectivity features makes it easy to share discoveries, journeys and locations.

The Nokia N82 in black is expected to start shipping within weeks, with an estimated retail price of approximately 400 euros, before taxes and subsidies.

March 12, 2008 A fantastic Evening with S60 in sunny Milan Posted by Saara at 05:30 PM | Categories: S60 Events

Once again we had an awesome Evening with S60 event, this time in Milan. In Milan you could already feel the winter receding and spring strongly gaining ground with the lovely sunny weather and blossoming cherry trees. I was lucky to have a couple of hours to spend walking around the city and seeing some sights.

sights_milan.jpg
From left to right Duomo, Duomo Square and Scforza Castle.

The evening started with welcome words by Giampaolo from the Italian S60 team and Mikko from the Product Marketing of S60. Check out the video below of the guys welcoming all and introducing the S60 crew.

After introductions everyone had the chance to play around with the latest S60 devices announced in Mobile World Congress a couple of weeks ago and talk to our S60 experts. In addition to the latest devices, our demos included S60 browser, browsing and Internet experience, widgets, sensors and touch among others.

The Breaker game game was once again great fun! The race was extremely tight, but finally I believe it was the grey team who won. The prize for the winners were headsets. Below's a video of the team showing off their shouting skills! Inviting Italians to be loud was not very hard :-)

All in all we had a great turnout of over 100 people and many great discussions. At the very end we raffled a Nokia N82 - here's a pic of the lucky winner with her brand new device! A very special thanks goes to the Nokia Store personnel who did an awesome job MC'ing the breaker game and also keeping us up to date about the Inter Milan vs. Liverpool football game during the evening! A big thanks also to all the S60 people, especially Carita who made all this happen.

You can find more photos from the event from our Evening with S60 Flickr group and the public channel Evening with S60 on Ovi Share. If you took photos or videos from the event please go ahead and add yours either to the Flickr group or the channel on Ovi Share.

Last, but not least, here's a little something for you all to remember the evening by! Just like for Miami, we made a special theme for Milan too.

March 10, 2008 Chinese S60 Blogs front door live! Posted by Saara at 09:17 AM | Categories: Commentary

Phil introduced our first Chinese language blog already in December and since then we have been working on to set up two more blogs and a front door similar to S60 Blogs for our Chinese site as well.

In addition to the first "玩转 - Play around S60" hosted by Daniel Qin, the Chinese Blogs now include "乐在鼓捣 - Fun with S60" hosted by Andy Li and "个性S60生活 - Living with S60" hosted by Paul Wen. Welcome onboard guys! Like Phil, I unfortunately can't comment much on the content due to the fact that I can't speak Chinese. However I'm sure that Daniel, Andy and Paul will be able to come up with lots of interesting topics and news to share with our Chinese speaking community.

Check out the new Chinese Blogs front door from http://blogs.s60.com/cn. All feedback is very welcome!
