August 22, 2007 Nokia Headquarters loses power! Posted by Phil Schwarzmann at 11:18 AM | Categories: Commentary

One of the nastiest storms I've ever experienced just came over Nokia Headquarters in Espoo, Finland. We lost electricity in the building for about 20 minutes. Doors didn't work and some people were trapped, and I saw some people trapped in the elevators! I'd have freaked out! But power's back on and we're back work!

Not too bad - I live almost next door and our power didn't go out!

I'd assume Nokia HQ would have some emergency generator for this case, so that elevators would be safely grounded on the first floor and doors could be opened to let people out, no?

I thought the same but I guess not!

That happened once when I was visiting the Nokia offices too. Couldn't believe that public buildings could be built (and pass inspection) that would not allow people to get out if the power failed.

Wow!!! I'm glad I wasn't there for that.

Don't know about elevators, you can get out through the doors (but not back in) in public places with electric security locks in Finland.

You'll probably trigger the alarm, but you can definitely get out. (Hint: you use the mechanical thing next to the lock to open the door, or there is a mechanical lever to use. Or maybe that is just too complicated for SW engineers / managers :-).

I'm pretty certain that getting out wasn't impossible as it's mandated by law to allow emergency exit at all times. Typically that requires breaking a plastic seal around lever on the door, and probably causes an alarm as noted.

Then again, the power outage was pretty exceptional. Running some non-critical systems on nearby campus I noted some systems had had uptimes excess of three years, without UPSes. Having emergency power plant on site that doesn't really deal with life and death situations must be unnecessary investment for a site that experiences maybe one power outage of more than a minute in five years...
