Even we Nokia guys and gals have phone problems too sometimes

Commentary - May 16th, 2007 - Written by schwarzm

Just got a new N95 on Friday, yesterday I updated the firmware and it bricked it. The phone support team tried to re-flash it, didn’t work. So now it’s on it’s way to Germany to be repaired. Grrrrr…… Fortunately there’s a bunch of N95’s laying around here, so I won’t miss my GPS when I’m holiday next week. But just wanted you all to know, that even we Nokia guys and gals have phone problems too sometimes. :-)

Did the some with a E70. Remember to have the battery charged, or else.

For completeness, why not perform the thought experiment of how your phone bricking would affect a typical customer, one that doesn’t have ‘tons of N95s sitting around’. Nokia has got to get a lot better on the reliability of their phones, and on the performance of their repair capabilities. While I have no experience with the Germany repair facility, I can tell you that the procedure for North American repair is extremely poor.

Hey Phil, maybe you should get the E90? Your thoughts?

It was. It just decided to reboot itself during the firmware update. I updated the firmware cause it was rebooting itself a couple times a day on its own.

I would, but it’s too big. I go jogging with my phone almost every day, it’s just too big for that.

Well… if the E90 is too big for jogging how about the E61i then ? A nice thin phone. Your thoughts?

I have a dream… that someday we can re-install OS on our mobile phones ourselves. I don’t know whether this is feasible. But it’s good to have something in PC world, for example CD or memory card containing the OS where we can “restore” it back to the phone.

It took me a while to decide between the N95 & E61i. I had the E61 for a while and loved it. I chose N95 because 1) I sported Feature Pack 1 2) GPS 3) 5mp camera 4) Nseries phones have more multimedia functionality.

I’ve been using phones with QWERTY keypads for the past 5 years, this is the first time I don’t have one. Not sure if I miss it or not.

Look before you leap with the E61i and S60.

The newer Symbian software and Nokia hardware will make me waste an additional two days a year.

    For example:

In the old Nokia 6233 I could set a shortcut on the right hand side key and go to call divert. Now I have to press thirteen keys to get to call divert.

Auto key lock is important to your phone doesn’t get bumped and make calls. In most Nokia phones you can unlock the phone with two keys. You need nine for the E61i and you have to fumble around in the dark until you get the right button to illuminate the keyboard.

The voice recording shortcut key on the left hand edge cannot be changed.

The interface with hotmail is archaic. You have to use the typical PC screen to access email. Is there no love between Nokia, Symbian and Hotmail?

I have been a faithful Nokia user and supporter over the years.

Consumers should be told about the time-wasting changes to the software. When software is upgraded numerically, we would expect the same features with improved performance and not a regression.
