February 23, 2007 Hat tip to everyone out there who says 'S60' Posted by Phil Schwarzmann at 02:58 PM | Categories: Commentary

Quick hat tip to everyone out there who uses the proper "S60" name instead of the old "Series 60". A while back we changed from "Series 60" to "S60", and it seems that virtually everyone in the blogosphere quickly adapted... Everyone except our *own* people!

Last week at 3GSM, I heard so many fellow Nokians (not from the S60 stand of course) using "Series 60" it made my head spin. I also even heard the terms "S40" and "S80" which do not exist. Even our top brass have been known to still use "Series 60" in front of a large audience. (Although I admit, at times I've been caught saying "Series S60", saying "S60" ten times in a row can be a real tongue-twister)

As you can imagine, it can get very frustrating for our marketing and branding team. In my monthly blog usage report I include a quick slide from Google Labs (shown below) showing the terminology search trends.

So big kudos to everyone out there who has buried "Series 60" and uses "S60"! :-)

3GSM Barcelona - Day 1 Posted by Phil Schwarzmann at 04:25 PM | Categories: S60 Events, S60 News

Well it's afternoon here at 3GSM in Barcelona. We're fortunate enough to have our hotel about 400m away from the event. In the morning I demoed S60.com and the S60 Blogs, then in the early afternoon I stood by the device showcase. On display are the latest 13 phones, including the five new devices that were launched at 11am this morning.

People have been swarming the S60 booth like crazy to see the Nokia N77, Nokia E90 Communicator, Nokia E65, Nokia E61i, and Nokia 6110 Navigator. If you have some questions about those devices, please ask in the comments section and I'd love to answer them. I'll write more info about them later tonight.

February 07, 2007 S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 announced! Posted by Phil Schwarzmann at 05:59 PM | Categories: S60 News

S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 has been announced! On Friday I'll be doing an interview for the Voice of S60 with the head of S60 Platforms Marketing, Mikko Röntynen. Please send me any questions or comments you might have for Mikko and I'll ask him during the interview! You can leave your questions/comments below in the comments section...

Espoo, Finland - Nokia today introduced a new Feature Pack for S60 on Symbian OS(TM), the market leading smartphone platform. S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 is designed for innovation and significantly facilitates the creation of compelling applications and accelerates performance. S60 3rd Edition is targeted for mid-range devices and offers significant usability enhancements for this category.

Development of applications and services for S60 devices will be faster and more cost-efficient as S60 brings a major extension to the C++ development environment with Open C. This introduction brings the familiar standard C function libraries to S60 software, supporting increased productivity and improved time-to-market of applications. With Open C, developers can reuse existing code and focus on the mobility aspects of their applications.

February 06, 2007 S60 device one of '20 Hottest Gadgets From the CES' Posted by Phil Schwarzmann at 11:25 AM | Categories: Commentary, Device Previews, S60 News

Scientific American lists the "20 Hottest Gadgets from the Consumer Electronics Show". The Nokia N76 featuring S60 is on their list. I love this sentence from their site...

everyone knows Nokia's software is the mad beastmaster of mobile usability—finally, the Razr done right.
