New features on S60.com

S60 News - November 29th, 2006 - Written by schwarzm

Coinciding with Nokia World, we’ve launched some cool new features for S60.com. I thought I’d share some of the highlights with you…

First off, the new Flash intro on the main page. You gotta check this out, it’s fantastic. A bunch of really funny Flash animations highlighting some S60 applications. After each clip, the user gets a short description of the app with links to download a free trial, view compatible phones, view related applications, send to a friend, and buy.

Next up are some short stories where S60 has been used in “real life”. Here’s an excerpt…

Happy birthday, I’m sorry. We just finished mixing the demo and I couldn’t tear myself away. I brought the mp3s, though. You can hear them anytime; they’re on my phone.”

The guy Juana didn’t know spoke up. “Your phone? Can I see?” She pulled it out and opened the music player. “Whoa, this is a serious music machine. What kind of sound is this?”

“Go ahead and listen, it’s kind of electrotrash but really we’re just messing around with everything. It’s upbeat, that’s for sure. I have a ridiculous amount of music on that thing. I use it as my mp3 player.”

After that we have the Application Wishlist, here’s how it works, all you developers might be interested in this - Let’s say you, the consumer, wants your S60 device to do something particular. You’ve surfed around on different application sites but didn’t find what you were looking for. Well then add it to S60.com’s wishlist! Maybe there is the perfect app already out there, other users suggest an application that fits your idea. Or if you have a completely original idea, developers can search wishlists for new ideas of software to write. I think it’s a brilliant idea and will be a huge success.

The amount of S60 devices on the market is getting out of control, so we’ve added some filtering options to help consumers sort through them all. Filter by edition (1st, 2nd, 3rd), region, and manufacturer…

And being a blogger, you’ve got to love this one, you’ll find a link directly to the S60 Blogs on every single page…

Absolutely brilliant, I hope the idea submission page takes off. Going to try it out later tonight and give my impressions.

What I would like to see is a mobile version of this blog. It’s very difficult to use currently with a mobile browser.

Thanks! Yeah, we’re constantly trying to spread the S60 message to more novice users. S60 devices are getting much much cheaper, therefore we’re getting alot of customers who normally would never purchase a smartphone. Hopefully these new features will make it easier for consumers to understand.

If consumers and developers take advantage of it, it will be a huge success.

Which mobile browser are you using?

I’m disappointed that S60.com has broken all the links to the individual phone pages (yet again), not cool.

For instance http://s60.com/life/s60phones?pbId=244&dm_id=1065 used to point to the N95 details, it now goes to a generic 404 style page.

Haven’t you guys heard of re-directs? Don’t you want people to link to S60.com?

I’m certainly wondering about whether to bother “fixing” all my pages that link to S60.com.

Good find! It’s not supposed to behave this way. All old URLs should remain in tact. We’re looking into this.

    Thanks!

Phil, whilst you’re fixing stuff is there any chance of some simple “pretty” urls for the phones at some point in the future? Like say http://s60.com/devices/Nokia/N95

    Phil,

I think the “real life stories” are great. I have one that I’m particularly proud of… I’ll try to keep it short.

I went to an Outlet Mall in Austin, TX a few months ago to look for a new suitcase for long-haul travel. I really wanted a Victorinox, but they can be pricey. I found a suitcase store, found the one I really wanted, but got second thoughts when I heard the price: $300 for a 22″ roller. It’s good quality, but come on!

I said, “I’ll think about it” and left the store — but really, I needed the suitcase as I was leaving for Finland the next day. So I sat on a bench, opened my Nokia E70’s browser, and went to http://www.google.com/froogle (the shopping website that compares prices), typed in the model number I had just looked at — and found that an online retailer was asking $220 plus $20 for shipping. I walked back in, showed them that an online retailer asked $240 incl. shipping, and said I’d be happy to pay $260 if I could get the suitcase now. The salesman promptly discounted the suitcase, I paid, and rolled out with my swanky bag. Needless to say I felt very tech savvy and sooo 2006.

Another thing I’ve taken a custom to doing while traveling is to take a photo of whatever I’m doing or looking at when I’m talking to a friend on the phone. After the call is over, I send the photo as an email, kind of as a contextual postcard that gives my friend some context to where I was when we were talking. It’s easier than video calls, but also better picture sharpness — my friends think it’s cool and feel a lot more connected to me even though I live on another continent.

Anyway, time to go to sleep, I have to catch a plane in the morning, once again…
