April 25, 2006 Introducing three new S60 devices from Nokia: N72, N73, and N93 Posted by Phil Schwarzmann at 01:37 PM | Categories: Hints & Tips

3.2 megapixel cameras with Carl Zeiss optics in the N73 and N93, DVD-quality video coming from the N93 to bring us the first real "camcorder phone". The N72 is due out in June, N72 and N93 out in July! - And - now if Nokia could just release all their other S60 devices they announced some months ago - and why is the N72 using 2nd Edition while N73 and N93 are using 3rd Edition..?!?

We in S60 are just happy to have great customer products that sell in volumes, be it 2nd or 3rd Edition, right? .) But one thing I'd like to see improved is visibility of Editions in marketing material. If you go to nseries.com, you will find '3rd Edition' mentioned on the very bottom of the page for N73, and 'Nokia S60 2.8' for N72. How logical is that, and how should general public know that 2.8 is actually 2nd Edition, Feature Pack 3? Knowledgeable developers will find exact information at Forum Nokia (http://forum.nokia.com/main/0,,150,00.html?matrixType=s60), but they are missing the 3 new ones still.

Congratulations Nokia. Great phones. Too bad the N73 doesn't have the high res screen of the N80. I would wait for it...

Having seen both QVGA and N80 screens, I must say I like QVGA more. It is physically bigger, and still looks very high resolution. S60-specific resolutions will die away quite soon.

That's an excellent point, it took me forever to find that information.

symbian 6.1 7.0 8.0 8.1 THE BEST!

symbian 9.1 THE BEST SHIT

symbian 9.1 is restrictive and is lacking in freedom of the customer

I have to say something about screen size and resoultion .. ..

I prefer high-resolution (high pixel density) screens and I'm really disappointed with the N93 resolution and pixels density, in fact I can’t find right word or sentence to express how much I’m disappointed with QVGA screen especially considering that I have N90 with amazing pixels density and it would be hard to fall into low resolution again :..o(

BTW:

Let me try to explain above image.. ..

It shows relation between resolution and psychical size of the screen, higher score is better of course. Nokia N90/80’s screen, with more than 10 000 pixels per square cm looks wonderful, showed image is ideal, even very bad photos looks wonderful on such a screen, its impossible to see single pixel without clump coze the physical pixel size is toooo small, slant line is a line not a stairway if you know what I mean, my English really sucks at this point.

Anyway, 2.8 ” or even better 3" together with VGA resolution would be killer combination and I hope that we could expect in N93 successor .. ..

P.S.
• 176*208:
o N70
o N72
o N91
• 352*416:
o N90
o N80
• 240*320:
o N92
• 240*320:
o N93 (same resolution as N92 but a little bit different physical size)

I have to say it once again, as the real Symbian/freak/geek/enthusiast or whatsoever; from N90 successor larger screen indeed, but also I’ve expected the same pixel density

Kind regards,
Teo

It would be nice if they took the pixel density of the N90 for instance, and put it on the E61. The E61 would probably be able to display VGA 640x480 graphics.

One of the reasons why I'm going to give up my E61 as soon as I get an E70 is because of the pixel density.

I totally get your point, but just one question: have you asked from common people to compare for example N90 and N73/N93 screens? I really believe the bigger QVGA screens have an instant wow! effect, even more so than 352x416 screens (which are too small in physical size). Pixel density is still enough in current QVGA screens, even though as a geek I appreciate the really high detail level. And like you said, high-end devices will have VGA and ~3" screen quite soon :)

Please, compare them side-by-side making the judgment. I have E70 also, and while the screen is really sharp, show that and N73 to anybody and you will note which one is better screen overall. Phil, can I have your E61 then? :)

Posted by: Jukka | May 9, 2006 01:23 PM

@Jukka
Well from that point of view I very agree with you Jukka, there is no doubt, average user just care about size they don’t know anything about pixel density, some of them even don’t know what is pixel :)

Also I have to agree that N73 screen coze wow effect at everyone, especially if compare them side-by-side with the N91 or even N90 one, but.. ..
Run gallery and load same image on both phones; or even better open same web page and than making judgment!?

Beside the better and sharper image HR screens are capable to show more information and it’s the very important for the small mobile phones screens isn’t it!?
After all I’m glade to hear that you confirming my expectation about VGA resolution and larger physical sizes ;))) honestly it’s the really must have feature on upcoming Smartphones, in fact Multimedia computers :D

Another confirmation of this theory and very good news for fanatic gamers is just announced cooperation between Nokia and ATI together with fact that there is already phone (N93 is the first Nokia multimedia computer) with HW accelerated 3D graphics/OpenGL ES 1.1 support.
In conclusion N73/93 screen looks awesome, screen is larger and it has better pixel density than the older N series phones but as the proud N90 owner I’m freally disappointed :(

@Phil
I’m not sure about E61 but N93 is definitely capable to process VGA screens, based on the benchmark results (image No. 1 & image No. 2) and built in High-Performance OMAP2420 (image No. 3) chip architecture and possibilities its more than obviously.

Wher is the my comment Jukka :([

Posted by: Apocalypso™ | May 9, 2006 08:42 PM

Teo, here is your comment, I don't know what happened.. My judgment was based on brief playing with N73, and I have to say I like it more than N90's screen. 352x416 is "proprietary" screen format which seems to disappear (like 176x208), and I think it's better that way since application developers can concentrate on standard display sizes.

BTW, what's up with JBenchmark site, cannot load it?

Posted by: Jukka | May 10, 2006 12:41 AM

I'm happy to hear it Jukka and I truly hope you are right about QVGA screen, I didn’t say that I prefer N90 screen so much I just said that I prefer that amazing pixel density, as I said a little bit larger screen with VGA resolution would be killer combination :)

Also I agree with you switching to (Q)VGA screens instead of 176*208 size and their successor of 352*416 is the very good move from Nokia !

But IMPO the 3rd edition is the main problem for developers, Symbian is meant to be OPEN and not restricted by signatures and similar stuffs, it’s the huge mistake, current state is completely intolerably and untenable! Without 3rd party soft S60 platform is closer to the dummy S40 than to the Smartphone family :(

I just hope that situation with 3rd party soft on 3rd edition will be better soon, real soon, like before the shipment of the n93. At least we need a decent and powerful 3rd party file manager which enables viewing of system folders I mean explorer with full access to all system resources. My last hope is the Mr. Domi, he is a unquestionably talented developer and after all he promised to me that he wants to port Fex to the 3rd edition.

I know that it Nokia's eyes it looks quite different, I guess its mainly because “freaks like us” are a minority, I mean that Nokia knows that most of S60 users have no clue what their phones are capable to do, and even worse IMPO at least 60% don’t even know they have possibility to extend phone features by installing some of numerous 3rd party applications.

I’ve just test it and it seams that everything is OK with benchmark links, it was some kind of temp problem with Imageshack server I guess :(
