Sun is shining; summer vacation is around the corner, some difficulties to keep up the tempo… And suddenly idea about perfect summer application came up my mind. What sort of application would be the ideal one? For Finns, like me, the summer application of 2006 could include the following features at least: Those of you who didn’t know the summers can be quite rainy and time spent in summer cottages (usually without luxuries but still the most common way to spend holidays), could be… let’s say challenging (hey 2-4 weeks with your family in small cottage :). So let’s include massive entertainment package (games, internet access, mobile TV and music) and services that makes life little easier.
To be more specific games like crosswords, celeb quiz, Finnish darts and digital version of Mölkky (traditional Finnish party game) could save some lives. TV or video entertainment should concentrate to repeat the final of this years’ Eurovision song contest, which by the way was won by Finnish band called Lordi, Lasse Viren’s run in 10 000 meters competition in Munich Olympics and the final game of the 1995 ice hockey World Championships. If we could live in perfect world the mobile device would superimpose the screen on the cottage wall. The audio material in the other hand would probably be some kind of mixture of Finn hits: list hits from 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. Isn’t it rare that in one of the most popular songs we have here, we are missing the Island that hasn’t be part of Finland ever, Saarenmaa?
Ok, then we truly need an exclusive weather forecast service, probably with a flavor of mystic shaman. For us this is not science, some guys just know the weather well. The well-working navigation system is also on must to have list. The best sights, service areas etc. are found easily and there is no need to start arguing who could read the map and who couldn’t. There is other thing that speaks on behalf of the navigation system: It’s always nice to boast your sense of direction to the neighbors when you are picking berries in the woods or tell stories to your international friends how we Finnish people still have strong roots in the nature and for that reason are capable to speak with elves and other fairy tale characters who guide us to right directions.
What if we just leave the device home and relax?

A weather radar (doppler) showing a real-time image of rain in the region, overlaid to Google Maps satellite imagery. That would allow me to see if there was rain approaching -- and if not, I can go ride my bike.
