January 29, 2007 Video transcoding and operator limitations Posted by Oren at 09:30 AM | Categories: Video

An article in The Register reports that YouTube has blocked a small company, TinyTube, from making YouTube videos available on mobile phones, following YouTube's announcement of a deal with the US operator Verizon.

We've written several entries about transcoding and watching video for your S60 device: ffmpeg, SmartMovie, plus ways to watch YouTube and Google Video. I'm interested to hear from any of you who have run into limitations of your own with tools like these, due to network issues or your local operator's rules.

We're a bit spoiled here at Nokia; we don't usually need to worry about things like operator customer service and locked phones. That means, though, that we may lose sight of what ordinary mobile phone customers may run into in the "real world".

Hi, I found another mobile video sharing site, that is totally independent from any mobile carriers. Basically anyone from anywhere in the world can use www.yourvids.mobi, without having to go through his/her operators portal.

I use CloneDVD mobile from Slysoft. Works fast and flawlessly, enables to carry favorite movies on MMC cards for boring flights and hotels on a business trips. And it'y well worth its cost (I know, I know...)

Hi Oren,

This is slightly off topic but Tommi pointed me in your direction and said you may be able to help.

I've got an N73 and N91 and I'm trying to watch the Real Video streams off the bbc.co.uk website. I'm getting a message saying the stream isn't fully supported and only the sound is played (same access points set and tried 3G and W-LAN). This also happens on a number of other sites.

On my old N70 I got this working by using the Helix player but this isn't available for Symbian 9 yet. Any idea if there's a way I can fix this?

Thanks for your help

Cheers,
James

Hi James, that will happen many times when you try to watch Realvideo streams that are not made for mobile consumption. I think also BBC has a special mobile site that has suitable streams for mobiles?

You can try www.bywifi.com. It is another mobile video sharing site for Youtube movies.
