September 27, 2006 Nokia N95: New features for developers Posted by Oren at 10:02 AM | Categories: Application development

We're all pretty excited about the new N95 multimedia computer, which was announced this week in New York. This is the first Nokia device to use S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 (FP1), which introduces new tools for multimedia (and other) developers.

Here are some of the multimedia highlights of the N95 and other FP1 devices:
- Support for Windows Media Audio (WMA) in the Multimedia Framework (MMF) (Note: this does not include API support for Windows Media DRM)
- New Content Listing Framework API: your application can retrieve, filter, and sort information about multimedia content, such as music or photos, stored in the device.
- Java JSR 234 (Advanced Multimedia Supplements): support for 3D audio effects, music equalizer control, radio tuner control

In addition to the above, FP1 supports video ringtones and "talking tones", that combine your favorite tone with a synthesized spoken name of the caller.

The FP1 SDK is already available to Forum Nokia Pro members, and should be released through Forum Nokia soon. Watch this space for updates.

Update (29-Sept.): our Flash team informs me that the N95 is also the first S60 device to support Flash Lite 2.0 (based on Flash 7), whcih has lots of new features including "dynamic loading of multimedia content such as images, sound and video"

Is the N75 a FP1 device as well?

Posted by: JC | September 27, 2006 06:05 PM

The N75 is based on 3rd Edition.

Will FP1 be available to the N73 users? And will N75 come with it installed also?

A quick question before I download a 346 mb file; are there any GPS APIs as part of the FP1 SDK or will there be a seperate add-on pack later?

@akBoom: the 3rd Edition SDK already supports location API's in C++ and Java (JSR-179), plus (according to the release notes) "SimPSY, including tool for generating simulated locations"

Right, if I got it correctly Location APIs have been there already in first 3rd Edition SDK. These APIs don't care where the location data is coming, obviously in N95 internal GPS is a good choice.

Patrick, S60 Feature packs are never upgradeable. N95 is A FP1 device and the only one so far. N75 is a 3rd Edition device.

its great to have FL 2 on a phone for next year, but will other manufacturers like LG and motorola jump straight to FL2 or will we see the market start to fragment, we already have to slightly alter the content for nokia and SE phones (if using the softkeys etc) then we will have to create 2 types of content for FL1.1 and FL2.0. I'm sure every one creating FL1.1 content knows how hard it is to get anyone to create content when there are so few phones out in the market, so even if there are a couple of phones with FP1 installed there wont be enough to warrant creating the content, so FL1.1 is here for some time yet!!

Ciao

one missing feature from my N91 is the fadein/fadeout between tracks. This is probably the most important feature that a music player needs to have. Any ideas if the N95 will have it?

About Flash Lite, pretty much all manufactures have sign-up for Flash Lite SDK. It takes time for a new technology to make it to market and create a market. Difference between FL 1.1 and 2 are big but there are planty of cool Flash Lite content out there. Just think about that the S60 browser will support Flash Lite 2, which means that you could create a web page playing video, run games, and applications all using Flash Lite!

Alessandro: the N95 player does not have fade-in/fade-out. I agree that it's a nice feature, but not necessarily the most important one. It's on our wish list for future releases.
Thanks for the comments about Flash Lite!

Thanks Oren and Jukka. We're planning to do some cool stuff with the GPS. Will let you know when the project gets approved and is ready for beta testing.
