« Manhattan Story Mashup | Main | Nokia N95: New features for developers »

If you read this blog, then you may have also read some of the many reviews of the Nokia N93. What those reviews may have missed is that the N93 can also play videos desgined for the video iPod (H.264/AVC at 30 fps). This means that you can download videos from Google Video (in Video iPod format), or from other sources, and watch them on your N93 without any conversion.
You can expect more S60 devices to support this format as we move to 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 (FP1). As Jukka noted in an earlier post, FP1 devices will also support streaming video directly in the browser window.

That's excellent! Does the same work on the current Nokia e-series models? There's a LOT of great iPod-compatible video out there, I haven't tapped into any of it because converting can be quite time consuming.
Posted by: Phil | September 21, 2006 04:07 AMlet's hope that E-series will get support for AVC with firmware update as mentioned by Jukka.

Posted by: Momchil Karabulev | September 21, 2006 05:26 AMIsn't just a software issue? I thought that maybe AVC was a very CPU-intensive codec and the hardware in the e-series couldn't support it. But that's just my guess. But then again, I guess that every device that supports AVC (and other codecs), have to pay a royalty to the creators of that codec. This could get expensive and since e-series isn't geared towards intensive multimedia, it was left out to save money for other things like e-mail clients.
Posted by: Phil | September 22, 2006 04:26 AMHow to find S60 or ipod compatible content from Google videos? Must be easy but I still haven't figured out.
Posted by: Jouni Juntunen | September 22, 2006 06:30 AM@Jouni - Not all videos on Google have a download link. For those that do, there is an "Video iPod/Sony PSP" option that downloads an MP4/AVC clip that works on the N93.
Posted by: Oren Levine | September 22, 2006 08:41 AMPhil, all: Nokia N93 is so far the only one that supports iPod-"brand" of AVC. It's a combination of HW and SW issues, and current models (even if there is AVC support) won't have this capability.
Posted by: Jukka Eklund | September 22, 2006 10:23 AMJust an idea: how long will it take until sites like Google Video and any random Hollywood movie site recognize Nokia Nseries (or some other S60 "brand") along with iPod/PSP?
