Wow, it seems S60 devices are finally being recognised also as capable portable video players. TiVo has started to offer a $24.95 upgrade to its free TiVo Desktop PC software. Users of Desktop Plus can transfer stored content from a TiVo receiver to portable media players like iPod, Treos and now also multimedia-centric S60 devices.
I trust this is the start of a trend. Software vendors need to start providing tools that enable effortless conversion of video content into S60 devices as well as iPods, PSPs and the like. The problem with S60 products is that there are many different configurations with different performance figures. Those need to be figured out, and suitable profiles created. This sounds more complicated than it is, for example most Nokia Nseries devices share the exact same video capabilities regardless of S60 edition. It would also help if manufacturers like Nokia would start publishing the performance details in their technical specifications (like this).

Living in Finland, I don't obviously have a TiVo so I can't try this out. In current version what puzzles me most is why there is only Nokia N80 included? If codec being used is AVC/H.264 there is many more products that could have been included as well. If it's plain MPEG-4 there would be over 10 additional models to add!
If you have an S60 device and Desktop Plus, it would be most interesting to hear any comments.

...What it means is that Nokia should publish a profile that contains all the relevant information for video downloading, and then provide that profile free of charge to companies like TiVo. The reason the N80 is the only one in the list is that it's up to TiVo to figure it out -- and they may not have the time or knowledge to do so.
Posted by: Markus | June 27, 2006 05:14 PMYes, that's what I meant. It's not confidential information, so why not just put it out there also for hobbyists/prosumers/enthusiasts. There is a fair try at http://forum.nokia.com/multimedia but it's not detailed enough, and bit outdated.
Posted by: Jukka | June 27, 2006 07:17 PMCiao
I think is only the N80 because it's the only S60 3rd edition phone that will be sold in US by Cingular. No other new S60 3rd edition are on US operators list currently !!

Posted by: Jukka | June 27, 2006 11:22 PMIt would be great if Nokia focused a little bit on platform compatibility between Series 60 devices. Right now it's very frustrating for third parties to provide applications unless you focus on specific models (customers won't understand the different S60 editions anyway). And that means your app will be out-of-date in a few months.
Posted by: Kennu | June 28, 2006 01:45 AMSure, though a bit off-topic for this post. I'm sure markets will decide whether Nokia and other S60 manufacturers are doing things right or wrong. The customer just checks the product number, and doesn't need to know about S60 editions.
Posted by: Jukka | June 28, 2006 11:02 AMThis is great news. I hope we see a lot more video content out there specifically for 3rd Edition devices. Awesome.
Posted by: Phil | June 30, 2006 11:12 AMPerhaps S60.com would be a good place for all S60 device manufacturers to publish device specs (S60 version, supported video/audio, features etc..). Maybe you could make the info available as a web-service and/or special URL with a tweakable query string too.
Let's say someone publishes an app that requires S60 >= 3.0 and WiFi or, to stay on topic, someone publishes a mp4 video that requires support for a particular bitrate and/or res. Right now the publishers need to figure out what devices will support this and display the supported phone models on their webpage so normal users can understand.
This is tedious for them and results in pages that are not kept up to date or, as in your Tivo example, incomplete lists.
It would be easier if they could link to a central page, say on S60.com, that shows all current devices that support the app / video / theme / whatever (or if they want to integrate with their site/app access a web-service that gives them this info). That way only one central database of devices needs to be maintained and all app / video / theme ... sites that refer to it will always be up-to-date!
