June 29, 2006 Melodeo launches, and their mobile support rocks Posted by Jukka Eklund at 07:53 PM | Categories: Applications

Here is a worthy competitor to Nokia's Podcasting application from Melodeo: Mobilcast. It's a Java application and should run on any newish S60 terminal, though they mention only some of them as officially supported. I ignored the warnings, installed on Nokia N91 and it went without a hitch.

I did a search for 'S60' and was almost instantly listening Voice of S60. This is how things should work always! :)

Dr, thanks to you then :) BTW, did you note the latest podcast is missing from there?

Hello Jukka,
I have a quick (OT) question for you. Can you tell me if it is possible to make a software change so that a QWERTZ keyboard on the E70 will work as a QWERTY keyboard? Thanks in advance. Also, check out www.e-series.org a good E series blog.

Sorry Tom, I didn't understand your question. Thanks for the link, it's fun to see how these new products are generating "fan sites".

Hi Jukka,
OK. I will restate my question. I want to buy an e70. I understand that the phone comes with several keyboard configurations (QWERTY in the UK, QWERTZ in Germany, etc.) I am interested to know if I buy a QWERTZ phone from Germany (the e70 is not planned for release in the Czech Republic), is there a way through software to change the keyboard configuration so it *works* as a QWERTY keyboard even if the letter "Z" is printed on the hardware instead of the "Y" in a QWERTY keyboard. My guess is that you are not a localized firmware guru, but the switchboard in Finland will not put me through to anyone on the e70 team, so I was hoping that you might be able to either (1) find out the answer, or (2) put me in touch with someone who would know. Many thanks in advance.
BR, Tom

Ok Tom, got it. What you're asking is to flash your phone with a different language firmware than what you would get by default. I guess that would work. Since you get the firmware through some local service point, you need to ask from them are they willing (or allowed) to do that.

Hi Jukka,
Thanks for your feedback. In talking to Nokia service in the Czech Republic, it was not evident whether or not they would be able or willing to flash the different firmware, so I decided to bail on the QWERTZ keyboard version and stick with good ol' QWERTY and have ordered it via the US. Thanks for your assistance.

E70 related question: I understand that the E70 has the Symbian OS v9.1, which seems to have limited software support. If an application (specifically ShoZu, which is my favorite Smartphone application) says it will work on the N71 (which also runs 9.1 I believe), is it reasonable to guess that it *might* work on the E70 as well? In a related question, what about Opera for Mobile? There is a picture of the E70, but no download button enabled yet. Apologies if this is a bad place for these questions, but I have appreciated your help so far, so I figured I would stay in the same thread.

OT: The Nokia warranty situation is still a bit murky for me since one person told me that a valid Nokia warranty from an EU country would be honored as valid in any other EU country, and another person that only a Czech Republic warranty would be honored (not useful since Nokia is not planning on releasing the E70 in the Czech Republic).

Hi Tom, glad you got that resolved. About application support, yes generally you can assume that any S60 3rd Edition (more accurate than only saying Symbian 9.1) application will run on all devices. There can be exceptions (might install, but looks bad etc), because of different screen sizes however.

About the warranty etc. stuff Nokia support discussions might be a better place to ask: http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/
