May 17, 2006 Nokia N93 preview in Mobile-review style Posted by Jukka Eklund at 03:30 PM | Categories: Devices

n93.jpg

Just noticed Mobile-review's mighty detailed N93 review. They are adding a photo-specific part later, should be interesting. If you want to see some comparison photos right now, check out comment by Apoc:

Camera battle N93 vs. K790i vs. N80

Sample No. 1
Sample No. 2
Sample No. 3
Sample No. 4

Cheers,
Apoc

And here is my own "artistic" N93 shot from the woods.

Update 25.5.06:
And here is the promised photo-specific part, with LOTS of pictures including the "battle" of 3MP phones.

What that suppose to mean!?

Let me guess.. ..

You have this baby!?

OMG, you are so lucky man but you already know that I guess ~:o)
I'm little jealous, in fact, honestly I’m green of envy :]

*Nice shot by the way

Eldar Murtazin :
" Performance. Considering fact that this handset is built on same hardware platform as Nokia N91, as well as some other smartphones from Nokia, only changes that could have occurred would be related to different display resolution. In 3D packet we saw lower performance, meanwhile in Jbenchmark1, Jbenchmark2 we’ve seen better results when compared to Nokia N91. Explanation is quite simple – Java was optimized. "

No comments about speed test results ?!

JBenchmark 2
JBenchmark 1

Well I have to say that I tend to disagree with Mr. Murtazin, especially with the bolded part!?

Well, I’ll try to explain.. ..

As you might know Nokia N93 has a little bit more pixels to process due the higher screen resolution (QVGA vs. 176*208 px) than the N91 .

So, considering above fact and theory that both phones have same processor, N91 should be a little bit faster and has a bit better score in benchmark because lower resolution and less pixels to process but it isn’t case and it means that N93 has to has faster processor !!

AFAIK OMAP2420 chip built in N93 support wide range of ARM11 processors, from 330 MHz up to 1 GHz, as the higher one is since fiction at the moment I guess that N93 has the 330 one !?

Any comment is more than welcome .. ..

Just borrowing one of our proto units, have to give it back soon..

Boy!? You know code name or what!? I rather call it baby :)

OIC, that’s bad, at least try to keep it till July :)

*by the way, what happened with my second comment?!

Posted by: Apocalypso™ | May 17, 2006 10:46 PM

Thanks for link :) I dont know why but Nokia dont like this review and removed all samples back from our country. It was very funny steps from such big company :) I really surprised

Apoc, your comment was again caught by junk filter. When you have some links in there, it will do that sorry about that. I'm picking those back whenever I can.

About hardware, Steve has a grid at http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/s60history.htm

Actually I have to agree that speed of CPU is higher and platform is different, it used OMAP 2420 which are differ from previous chipset. I change this part. Thanks :)

Posted by: Eldar Murtazin | May 18, 2006 03:29 PM

Hi Eldar,

Glade to hear it that you agree that N93 has faster and quite different hardware platform (first phone with 3D hardware acceleration) based on new chipset OMAP 2420 which runs ARM11 processors from 330 MHz up to 1 GHz, considering that fact its obviously that N93 has faster processor, at least 330 MHz.

Review is more reliable now ;)

*Nice work by the way, as always, very useful source of information for all N93 freaks,

Kind reagrds,
Apoc

A bit OT, but ARM11 runs OMAP2420, and the new Cortex-A8 (with 1GHz) core is in OMAP3430.

Posted by: Jukka | May 18, 2006 11:31 PM

Sure, OMAP3430 has wonderful specifications, I only hope that we can expect it in N93 successor together with ~3” VGA screen :D

Yep, I'd like that too :)

ps. I don't know why your comments are filtered out. Nothing personal!

Posted by: Jukka | May 19, 2006 10:04 AM

Yes, quite strange issue, it happens with almost all of my comments :( it doesn’t matter if I post from home or job desk or even from my laptop connected over GPRS, hm :?

But who care, the only important thing is that it always appear soon or later ;)

Posted by: Apocalypso™ | May 19, 2006 10:11 AM

Upssss, once again, I hope its just bad luck :[

Teo, if you just left a comment it's gone. This is some other error?

Posted by: Jukka | May 22, 2006 11:56 PM

No, same problem with waiting as approval but now with new layout it looks quit different and appears as the error message ?!

I’ve post something yesterday but .. ..

We have already spotted that Nokia N93 is the first Nokia phone with HW accelerated 3D graphics and OpenGL ES (1.1) support.

As the real freaks we have been very curious about this new and exciting technology and after some research we have found that N93 uses PowerVR MBX 2D/3D graphics accelerator from Imagination Technology incorporated into Texas Instrument’s OMAP2420 together with the fully programmable VGP vertex processor core, FPU (floating point unit) and ARM11 processor. Although Nokia N93 isn’t the only Symbian phone that uses this technology, it seams that Sony Ericsson P990 as well as.. ...

Teo, some of your links are not working? How can I correct those?

Posted by: Jukka | June 7, 2006 12:05 AM

OIC .. ..

sorry Jukka, I made mistake, I've forgot to fix the links, they are relative and therefore don’t working :(

However you can simply fix it,
