Yes, it's been too long since the last update. (But I swear I've been answering just about every comment by private email. You havent been neglected or forgotten. :-) )

What's new?

Nokia will be attending the "Podcast & New Media Expo" again this year. We met a lot of fantastic and exciting Podcasters last year and got a lot of great feedback, so we're going to be out in sunny California to let everyone play with our new toys and we'll take copious notes about what you love, hate and wish for in your mobile podcasting apps.

If you want to come say hi, the date is 28-30 Sept in Ontario California at the Ontario Convention Center. Should be fun.

podcastexpo.jpg

with that said, its also been too long since we've updated our default directories for our mobile app. So we'll be doing a minor overhaul of our RECOMMENDED and PODCAST DISCOVERY folders before then.

So in the past year, which audio and video podcasts do you find yourself listening to regularly? Who are the indie Podcast personalities or the mainstream podcast shows you cant live without? Are there certain themed folder topics that you want to see more of?

Or, if you are a podcaster who will be attending the event, be sure to let me know your Podcast Name, RSS Feed, and a note that you're coming and we'll try to get your show in a special subfolder for a limited time.

And before we start the comments, here's a little taste of something coming soon....

MusicMenu.jpg PodcastingPlayerMenu.jpg

and in the very near future... the upcoming release of the Nseries Music Player will include the long-awaited and much requested Bookmarking feature.

(Great news... but be aware that the bookmarking is tied to the Music Player, NOT the Podcasting app. So only devices which either have the new player or have a sw update with the new player will have that feature. I know....I know... but the upcoming devices with Podcasting preinstalled should all have it.

Luckily there is now the Nokia Software Updater app up at Nokia.com, so those happy devices which take on the new player will be rocking and ready.

Steven,

I'm glad to hear the new version should be out soon. I have some other questions/feedback, however:

1. The current podcasting app disconnects when the phone does, and will not reconnect on its own. I.e. if I'm downloading 3 podcasts and get a phone call, I have to manually go back to the app and restart each of these podcasts downloading. It would be nice if it would automatically reconnect.

2. Setting to automatically delete episodes that are 1. listened to (i.e. marked old) or 2 a specific time period old (1 week, 2 weeks, etc). I use my device as my only Podcatcher now, and it's tedious to have to delete them every now and again to free up space on my memory card.

3. As a content creator as well, I'd like to know how to get my video content to not display the incompatibility warning. I've tested my podcast show on N73, N80, and N95, and it works great on all, yet all will still show the warning that the content isn't compatible, causing some viewers to assume it won't work. Is there a way to get rid of this warning?

4. A new view of only unlistened-to podcasts would be great. Ie I have roughly 10 different shows that I subscribe to. I have my app set to automatically update and download these shows, and I'd like to be able to pull up one screen that shows, out of the ten, that I have, say, 4 different new episodes from various shows. This would be extremely convenient.

Thanks

I think that much of the Podcasting App functionality should be included directly in the media player in S60.

Ricky, I think the answer to your question about not showing the warning message has to do with the enclosure type tag in the feed.

S60 Podcasting checks the enclosure type before downloading then either shows a warning confirmation or starts the download depending on what content type it sees.
For example, enclosure type="video/quicktime" claims to be a quicktime video and since quicktime videos are not compatible with S60 Podcasting app would ask for confirmation about the download. If you can change your enclosure type tag to something like "video/mp4" then the the download would start right away without asking the warning message.

It looks like currently your enclosure type is set to type="video/vnd.objectvideo"

Hi,

I really like the podcasting app :-) Nevertheless here are some suggestions:
- in settings: it should be possible do define a "connection group" as a permanent connection (it's possible to choose a group manually but not to save it into the settings)
- it should be possible to have an option "when free space is below x% delete old and already heard episodes"
- it should be possible with one "click" to update all subscribed podcasts and download all new episodes

Thanks for the great app :-)

Regards,
Gebhard

I am glad to see an innovative company like you guys step up and integrate podcasting into your device. I saw your guy's booth last year (I was doing a different show then) and I don't think you would have even remembered me, (I was one of the libsyn folks) I can't wait to see your guy's booth this year and see what you guys have up your sleeve.

We have the best video game podcast around!

Hi

Quick question ..will N95 get the sw update with the new music playing app? I am *killing* for the bookmarking feature!

Also - can you please put an option in the podcasting app to disconnect after 5 mins of inactivity? When I autodownload - I dont want it stuck on my WIFI draining my battery if the phone is not plugged in! Also since I pay for 3G data by the minute if I am downloading out and about after some idle period I would like it to disconnect.

Also - an auto delete facility would be great for me as well.

Thanks for the great app!

Sorry one other comment. I think there is a bug with the auto update?
If I start podcasting app freshly.. and set update time to be tonight at midnight - it does not autoupdate. But if I set it to a date in the past - it auto connects updates then the next day it updates fine? Is this correct behaviour?

A podcasting request: Could you fix it so that when an item is fully downloaded it is automatically marked as old so that the application does not try to delete it again if some other application deletes the file.

I mainly use the media-player application to listen to podcasts, and when I have heard a show I delete it from the media player. Next time I go back into the podcast application and update the feeds - the episode will re-download.

Thanks

Great News...!

Posted by: naba | September 17, 2007 02:27 PM

This is fantastic news! I use the podcasting app on my Nokia N95 religiously - every morning in my commute to work and when I'm at the gym.

The Bookmarking feature has got to be the No.1 thing I'm looking at.

However, there seems to be also a bug that when I download a podcast, and the download gets interrupted halfway and then the download is resumed later.. I get a podcast with some segments repeated.

Also, sometimes the downloads of a podcast can run past 100%(??) even up to 159%...I wonder why?

Is there a way to fix this?

Hi, Steven...

We met at the expo, and you were excited that we had a 3gp video version of our podcast at:

http://www.neo-fight.tv

I asked how we can get this listed in the main directory, and you suggested I send you a comment here... so here I am :-)

We'd love to be listed with Nokia. Please let me know what I need to do to get listed...

Much as I hate to praise the iTunes/iPod combination, one feature I used to use a LOT in that set up was Smart playlists.

It was a bit clunky because you had to tier the playlists to get the layers of logic (to group podcasts and select only new ones), but once set up I had a number of playlists that would include only my unheard podcasts in a particular grouping (of my own choosing). So, for instance, I had an unheard Symbian podcast playlist, an unheard general tech podcast playlist, a playlist that combined the two, another for unheard film reviews and entertainment news, etc.

All I had to do was select my playlist to get continuous themed podcasts playing on my iPod (oh yes, and that remembered where I'd got to too - OK, I know that's a Music Player issue).
The one downside was having to connect the iPod to the computer to updated the "new/unplayed" flag.

Surely S60 can do at least as well as that?

Also, I'd like to have a setting for the % through a podcast I need to be to consider it "played". At the moment I only have to start to play it and it's marked played. iPods are at the other end of the extreme - you have to play every last little bit of the closing signature theme before it's considered played. I'd guess most people would want to set the percentage to something like 95% played before you consider a podcast no longer new.

I'd also second the requests to be able to automatically clean up based on some criteria (but still retaining the option to mark any particularly interesting podcast as "undeletable").

The last post on this blog was in August. Is there any news on new S60 podcast features?

Any ETA on that bookmarking music player for podcasts? Not having it is killing me.

I was going through my program from the Expo and your ad led me to this site. Somehow I missed your booth! I'd love to learn more about what you are doing and possibly have our podcasts listed in your directory.

Most of my favourite podcasts works fine, but this one won't load the mp3 content, only the text description:

http://www.tvo.org/TVOspecial3/WebObjects/TVOMedia.woa?bigideasfeed

It is a really good podcast, so I'd like to get it in. Any ideas how to fix?

The site seems not to work!?

This is a great app, but from the comments I think it didn't pick up as well as it should. Many great ideas here that made me think "OH yeah, that'd be great". I mainly wanted to suggest having the podcasting application remember where you reached in each podcast. I use it on my drive daily and I have to keep the application open for 9 hours so I can pick up the podcast where I left it in the morning. Auto disconnect wifi, reattempt downloads if connection failed and download all are all great ideas. I also suggest being able to group podcasts into folders so I can update "comedy" folder altogether, or "news" folder individually.

Thanks and keep up the good work :)

Just recently Buzz out loud podcast is not working properly in the n95 podcast app (I have latest firmware version):

http://feeds.feedburner.com/cnet/buzzoutloud

If I load the channel up I can download any episode I want. Then when I do an auto update the next day - no new episodes appear. So then I have to change the channel URL (ie: add or remove a trailing slash) for it to see the new content then have to download manually. I think this has happened in the last 2 weeks or so.

It works in other podcatchers fine.
