December 20, 2006 Nokia Podcasting Survey Posted by Steven at 07:50 PM | Categories: Nokia Podcasting

EDIT UPDATE: The Podcasting Survey is now closed.
But you can still leave your comments, feedback, suggestions, and gripes on the Comments section of this blog!

Original Post:

For those of you who have installed and used Nokia Podcasting on an NSeries S60 3rd edition "multimedia computer":
(and ok..you Eseries fans can play, too)

We have survey for Nokia Podcasting up and running for you to give feedback.

URL LINK WAS HERE: Nokia Podcasting Survey is now closed

We want to know how well you think the application works as a mobile podcatcher (ie., the usability of the app once you've gotten connected...not the connectivity/WLAN) as well as feedback on what things you feel are priorities for future versions. (Here's where you can let us have it to get that Bookmarking feature in, to improve the setup of the WLAN, improved personalization of folders, Podcast creation, etc.)

It's unfortunately a pretty looooong survey (34 questions... both scaled and open ended.). But we really need to ask the questions to find out which things are on the right track, what needs to be prioritized, and to justify that mobile podcasting is worth the time and investment to continue to develop.

Thanks in advance for your feedback! (And feel free to leave a comment in the comments section if you havent yet used the Podcasting app, but are interested in giving feedback in the future.)

UPDATE EDIT:
From the Comments, Alex said:

Thanks Alex. To clarify: The survey is absolutely concerned about how to improve existing features as well as new features. This feedback just helps the development team get an idea of which things appear to be highest priority from the key users. Is an existing feature "good enough" to want to get other new features in before going back to make other improvements... or would improvements be more useful than new stuff?

You get the idea. But I wanted to clarify that we're definately looking at the improvements as well as the new.

I filled out the survey, and would certainly encourage everyone to do the same. In addition, here a few comments that I'd like to share with everyone here.

Before adding new features, it would nice to see some of the existing features improved:

1. When I have listened to a podcast entry, I would like to be able to delete it and not see it again in the future. Right now, if I delete an entry it goes away only to come back the next time the podcast is updated.

2. While listening to a podcast, if I pause for "too long", it seem like the Music Player exists by itself, which gets me back to the Podcasting application. This is quite annoying as when I want to continue listening to the podcast, I need to fast forward to where I paused previously.

3. I have set the application to update every hour. It may update the list of podcasts, but it doesn't seem to start downloading automatically new podcasts. Is this is a user error? (I think it would make sense to just download the podcasts as they become available, or at least have the option to do so.)

I hope that this feedback will be helpful,

Alex

Sorry,

I missed the questionary, too :(

Well, one of the biggest problems I have is with podcast download. I select several podcasts and several files inside each and leave the device to do its work (via WLAN :) After hours I come back to see that only few files have actually been downloaded! I reselect each missing file, see no problems and go elsewhere. Yet again, repeatedly, only few files are downloaded.

Quite honestly I can't remember if I completed the survey or not. I know I did several mobile surveys in the past month or so. But I do have some feedback to leave:

1. Updating Podcasts - It'd be cool to be able to set a "date of relevance." I.e. I have a few business-related podcasts that haven't been updated in over a year, yet when I update my podcasts, it says "updated recently" when it obviously hasn't been.

2. What's new? - In the main screen, where there's currently three options, I'd like a 4th: New Items. This way when I leave the app running in the background, I can quickly check it and in one place not only SEE what's been updated, but listen to it straight from that menu. This is key if I have 5+ podcasts that I subscribe to.

3. For some reason, I experience a similar problem as Jouni - if I leave it to update, I get red exclamation points on every podcast. I have it set to use my EDGE connection and always. There's no reason it should have an error, I seldom am out of coverage.

That is all, keep up the fantastic work! This app has replaced my iPod and I love it!

I have my N80 set to autmatically offload images and video via BT using PC Suite. The problem is that it also offloads my videos from podcasting app. PC Suite does not provide a useful setting for this. Some coordination between Podcasting app and PC Suite would be useful to make sure videos in Podcasting folder are not offloaded. Otherwise, I realy like the app.

I have now a little more than 20 podcasts setup. Most of them publish one episode a week. So at a given time, I have maybe 3 to 5 podcasts with something new waiting for me.

Have to scroll through 20 entries just to find those that have something new is somewhat annoying. I am sure that something can be done to improve this UI.

One more thing, which now seem obvious after using the application for a while: when displaying information about a particular episode, more than the size of the mp3 file, I am interested in knowing how long it is. Is this a 2 min, 15 min, or 1 hour episode?

Knowing the duration of an episode is important to decide what to listen too at a given time. And yes, you can somewhat infer the duration based on the file size, but it would be even better if the duration could be displayed directly.

Any chance of getting Podcast to work on 2nd Edition, I really want to sync with my Google Callendar.

These comments have been invaluable to me as is this whole site. I thank you for your comment.

Hi!

I like this application and just got one problem.

If the podcaster uses always the same file name (just the location is changing), you will overwrite your files on your Nokia N95 as they are all saved in the same directory.

As a topical podcaster (on motivation) I have watched my listenership steadily grow over the last 19 months, and consider the cast a great success. However, I have not discovered the secret sauce for money,so I will have to settle for fame.

As a listener, I listen to business podcasts while driving, and have all but forgotten the other functions for a car radio...

This is an excellent app & I'm in love with it. The music player has improved so much that in a little while, with the right phone, this could very well replace an iPod.

I have a sort of a hackish question I would like to ask someone from the development team. If I can get an e-mail ID or anything, I can contact him/her directly, which would work best. Anyhow, my query is as follows.

I own an N73, which cannot use WLAN. So, I have to use an EDGE connection to download podcasts (no 3G). But in my part of the world, data connectivity is not excellent everywhere. But I can easily get the appropriate file (corresponding to the podcast episode) on my PC using my broadband/Office LAN.

Now, if I put that file in the podcasts directory on the phone, is there any way to fool Nokia Podcasting into thinking that it has downloaded the episode & playing it? Put another way, is there any way for Nokia Podcasting to sync with podcasts downloaded on a PC?

Is the source for this application available? Then I could give it a try myself. :)
