Troubleshooting:
Q: I have beta version installed on my memory card and I upgraded my MC sw without doing any backup and restore. After I installed Podcast ver 1.00.2 on top of this new MC sw (either on phone memory or memory card), I got an error message: "Menu: Unable to execute file for security reasons" when I start Podcast ver 1.00.0. I didn't encounter any problem during the installation process.
A: The 1.00.2 update of Nokia Podcasting should fix this problem. Just re-install the new version.
Other troubleshooting suggestions:
To fix this problem, either format your memory card and re-install Podcast ver 1.00.2 if you selected memory card as the location for installing Podcast ver 1.00.0 or use memory card reader (or USB mass storage) to delete the following file:
UPDATE: Installing Nokia Podcasting 1.00.2 should fix the following problems. These instructions are for users who have previously installed the Beta version of Nokia Podcasting on their S60 3rd edition device and were trying to install the 1.00.0 version.
Download the updated Nokia Podcasting application (1.00.2)(25 Oct 2006)
Download file:
nokiapodcasting_1.00.0.2.sis
(UPDATE: Users should now be able to download and install the SIS file via their mobile browsers directly to compatible devices)
***
Before upgrading your Podcasting app:
1.If you don't want to preserve your subscribed podcasts and episodes:
a. Uninstall Podcast app from App manager before installing ver 1.00.2.
b. Find the Podcasting icon on your device. (For example, in the MY OWN folder on the N91).
c. Click "Options" and choose "Remove"
d. Install the 1.00.2 version of Nokia Podcasting
2. If you would like to preserve your subscribed podcasts and episodes:
a. Simply install ver 1.00.2 on top of the Beta version, you will see a warning message that ver 0.93.(6) will be replaced by ver 1.00.(x).
b. Select OK to proceed with the installation and use the same location where Beta version is installed when asked where do you want to install ver 1.00.2.
If you are not sure where Beta version was installed, open App Manager and check whether there is a memory icon shown besides Podcast. If yes, your Podcast Beta version is installed on memory card (or hard drive); otherwise, it is installed on phone memory.
3.After upgrading your Podcasting app:
If you did not remove (uninstall) Podcast Beta version before upgrading to ver 1.00.02, your default directories will not be updated to the one comes with ver 1.00.2.
In order to show the new default directories, open "Directory" view, select "Options" then select "Restore Default." The new Directories should now show.
The new default directories are: Featured, International, Podcast Discovery, and Video
You can now update your Multimedia Computer (yes, these are not just Phones anymore!) software via the Nokia Phone Software Update tool at nokia.com (For example, N91 software update should allow N914GB to play Digital Rights Management (DRM) protected wma files transferred via Windows Media Player 10 with the update)
BUT
4. Things to watch for when you are upgrading your Mulitmedia Computer (MC) software via Nokia Software Update (NSU):
a. Always do a backup on your phone memory before NSU via PC Suite.
NOTE:Harddrive or large MMCs (1GB+) are not recommended to be backed up using PC Suite.
b. After NSU is completed, restore your backup FIRST via PC Suite before proceeding with upgrading your Podcasting app to ver 1.00.0
Comments
great!

Hiya Steve,
I updated the Podcast app on my N93 but I don't see the new directories. My subscribed podcasts did in fact appear when I started the app.
Posted by: Darla | November 1, 2006 04:52 PMHere you go, Darla:
If you did not remove (uninstall) Podcast Beta version before upgrading to ver 1.00.0, your default directories will not be updated to the one comes with ver 1.00.0.
In order to show the new default directories, open "Directory" view, select "Options" then select "Restore Default." The new Directories should now show.
Posted by: Steven | November 1, 2006 10:35 PMThe file is a sis file not a sisx file as needed for v3, whats going on there?
Posted by: Dansus | November 3, 2006 01:52 AMI'm told the sis file is not supported on my E61.
Posted by: Ben | November 3, 2006 03:13 PMCurrently, SISx file cannot be downloaded via mobile browser directly to your device.
The problem is that the server returns the MIME type "application/vnd.symbian.install" for both, SIS and SISX files.
Files with the SISX extension need to be set to the MIME type "x-epoc/x-sisx-app". We are trying to fix the problem. Currently, you can download the file via PC and install with the Nokia PCSuite.
I have just testing this again with the sis file for E61 (install via PC Suite) and it worked fine.
We are checking to see if we can fix this on the blog pages for mobile installation
Posted by: Steven | November 3, 2006 03:38 PMWill it work on Nokia 9500?
Posted by: svu | November 4, 2006 01:43 AMHi,
Big problem with this app on my E61: it won't download anything.
I had beta 0.93 installed previously on my E61 (firmware v2) and it worked just fine (apart from the flickering scroll bars of course). I then installed Podcasting v1 over the beta following your instructions here. Installation went fine and all my podcasts are still there. Good. Reseted the Directories to default and got the new podcast directories. Good.
But whenever i click on a directory or a podacst episode to download it, the spinning wheel icon (indicating that downloading is in progress) appears briefly and is immediately replaced with a red exclamation mark. It doesn't even ask me for an access point and doesn't display any error message. If I choose "Search" and enter a search term, it immediately displays "Search error" without even trying to connect.
So 2 questions here:
1) What is wrong? ;-)
2) How come that there isn't a menu item somewhere saying "Show Error" or something similar when i select an item in Podcasting that displays the red exclamation mark. I understand why you're displaying an exclamation mark whenever an error occurs instead of displaying an error message but the user must have a way to know what happened and what they could do to solve the problem. You know, like in Handy Weather (in handy weather, set it to update the weather automatically, select an non-working access point and see what happens when it tries to update the weather).
Posted by: vioccc | November 4, 2006 04:49 PMSVU: the wheel icon (indicating that downloading is in progress) appears briefly and is immediately replaced with a red exclamation mark.
STEVEN: This looks like the problem is you cannot get a connection. (Thats the main cause of the Red "!" or Search Error)
If your Nokia Podcasting is automatically trying to connect without asking your connection, try disconnecting your connection, exiting Podcasting, restart Podcasting and set up your SETTINGS again:
1) From the Main Menu of Nokia Podcasting, open OPTIONS. If you have an open connection you should see a DISCONNECTION option. Select it if it shows. After disconnecting, (or if it doesnt show), go to step two.
2) From the Main Menu of Nokia Podcasting, select OPTIONS. Select SETTINGS. Select CONNECTION. Select your DEFAULT ACCESS POINT.
If you are using WLAN, you will need to set that up outside of Nokia Podcasting for it to show as a Default Access Point.
SVU: How come that there isn't a menu item somewhere saying "Show Error" when i select an item in Podcasting that displays the red exclamation mark...the user must have a way to know what happened and what they could do to solve the problem.
STEVEN: I'll pass that comment on to the development team.
Please note when using Nokia Podcasting on the ESeries, though: Nokia Podcasting was developed for the NSeries line (Optimized for N91 and recommended for NSeries with WLAN capabilities like the N80, N93 and N95.
Nokia Podcasting should be compatible with other S60 3rd edition devices, but the application has not been optimized for other devices and is offered "as is" for other devices.
With that said, all comments for other S60 device compatibility are very welcome, as we obviously would like Nokia Podcasting to be an excellent user experience on compatible devices and would like to continue to improve the app.
Posted by: Steven | November 4, 2006 06:54 PMHi Steven,
Thanks for your fast answer. It's always great to see that people are listening to us.
I've got my connection settings set to "Always Ask". Close all the network connections on my phone didn't solve the problem. But rebooting did. After i had restarted my phone, podcasting worked fine again, it asks me for my access point whevever it needs to connect. I should have tried to reboot the phone earlier but mind you, restarting my phone is such an unusual thing to do that i had not even thought it.
Posted by: Vioccc | November 4, 2006 08:26 PMHi,
This application is brilliant, but there are some things i would like to see in a future version, where can we send "feature requests"?
René
Posted by: Rene Castberg | November 6, 2006 11:44 AMHi,
One thing that prevents the Podcasting app being a "must have" on my E61 is way it refuses to auto-download. I wanted it to fetch the BBC Breakfast News podcast each morning so that I could watch it on the way to work, but it claims this podcast "is not compatible with this device", even though I can download the podcast manually and it plays back fine.
I guess this is because the app is optimised for the N series, but it would be great to find a way of overiding this warning without having to manually intervene.
Posted by: David | November 7, 2006 12:02 AMUPDATE:
You should now be able to download and install the SISX file from this page via your mobile browser directly to your compatible S60 3rd edition device.
Please let me know if there are any problems.
Posted by: Steven | November 7, 2006 04:42 PMThe app is excellent -have been using since beta and I am now a confirmed podaholic. Two comments/requests:
It would be great if the app remembered where you were in the podcast last time you listened to it. (A kind of bookmark) Opening it should prompt you to restart from last bookmark or start from beginning.
Second suggestion - when playing a podcast it is not possible to navigate other pods as Symbian seems to disable the 'opening' application while its 'child' is active. This can be seen when opening a file from the file manager for instance. While the file is open - no more file manager.

Posted by: Pieter | November 7, 2006 08:30 PMRE: Bookmarking
Unfortunately, the lack of bookmarking is not a platform problem. We dont have that feature in our current release of Podcasting. (Its dependent on the Music Player, not the Podcasting app).
But it is definately a feature that is highly desired and useful.
Posted by: steven | November 8, 2006 03:42 PMis this also available to n70/n90?
Posted by: magz | November 10, 2006 04:06 AMI updated to 1.0 and now when I try to download podcasts I am told that my Download limit has been reached. I have plenty of space (more than 5%, which is what my settings are for), and I've tried rebooting my phone, and still it does this :(
Posted by: micah | November 20, 2006 04:16 AMUsed beta on my N80, which worked fine. AS I experienced problems with the turning wheel and different themes, I was glad that wheel is not turning in the 1.00
After I installed new version, I cannot access the settings in the app. Everytime program closes.
Any hint ?
Thanks, Oliver
Posted by: Oliver | November 20, 2006 12:01 PMAfter install, a got that message :

So now i don't manage to make it work...
Posted by: JeanN80 | December 1, 2006 06:13 PMIs there a solution ?
Thx.
I have recently bought Nokia N70 Music edition. On the n series site its mentioned under "get more out of your Nokia N70 " that it supports Podcasting. Is it true....?

Here's a couple of updates from the moderator:
Q. After I installed new version, I cannot access the settings in the app.
A. Make sure you have installed the newest version (1.00.2) The new version is now available at www.nokia.com/podcasting and on this blog. That should fix any problem.
Q: I am told that my Download limit has been reached. I have plenty of space (more than 5%, which is what my settings are for)
A: The 1.00 version had the default setting at 25%. 1.00.2 changes it to 75% which should fix the problem. You can either change your setting to a higher % or put the default to "Ignore" if you go past your limit.
Q: is this also available to n70/n90?
A: Nokia Podcasting is currently only available for S60 3rd edition (N70 is S60 2nd edition). There are some 3rd party applications which have podcasting abilities for 2nd edition.

Posted by: Adnan Ahmad | July 15, 2007 09:50 AMHi,
I'm a huge fan of Nokia Podcasting. Love the application, and love the "Nokia Podcasting Show".
I did subscribe to the Nokia Podcasts, and have found only 4 podcasts yet on it.
It would be great if more shows came out on a more regular basis. Just love Steves voice and the music choice made for the shows !
A Big Fan
