October 31, 2006 Upgrading Nokia Podcasting: FAQ (Updated Dec 06) Posted by Steven at 08:59 AM | Categories: Nokia Podcasting, Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting:

Q: I have beta version installed on my memory card and I upgraded my MC sw without doing any backup and restore. After I installed Podcast ver 1.00.2 on top of this new MC sw (either on phone memory or memory card), I got an error message: "Menu: Unable to execute file for security reasons" when I start Podcast ver 1.00.0. I didn't encounter any problem during the installation process.

A: The 1.00.2 update of Nokia Podcasting should fix this problem. Just re-install the new version.

Other troubleshooting suggestions:
To fix this problem, either format your memory card and re-install Podcast ver 1.00.2 if you selected memory card as the location for installing Podcast ver 1.00.0 or use memory card reader (or USB mass storage) to delete the following file: \Private\10003a3f\import\apps\mPodder_reg.rsc

UPDATE: Installing Nokia Podcasting 1.00.2 should fix the following problems. These instructions are for users who have previously installed the Beta version of Nokia Podcasting on their S60 3rd edition device and were trying to install the 1.00.0 version.

Download the updated Nokia Podcasting application (1.00.2)(25 Oct 2006)
Download file:
nokiapodcasting_1.00.0.2.sis

(UPDATE: Users should now be able to download and install the SIS file via their mobile browsers directly to compatible devices)

Before upgrading your Podcasting app:

1.If you don't want to preserve your subscribed podcasts and episodes:
a. Uninstall Podcast app from App manager before installing ver 1.00.2.
b. Find the Podcasting icon on your device. (For example, in the MY OWN folder on the N91).
c. Click "Options" and choose "Remove"
d. Install the 1.00.2 version of Nokia Podcasting

2. If you would like to preserve your subscribed podcasts and episodes:
a. Simply install ver 1.00.2 on top of the Beta version, you will see a warning message that ver 0.93.(6) will be replaced by ver 1.00.(x).
b. Select OK to proceed with the installation and use the same location where Beta version is installed when asked where do you want to install ver 1.00.2.

If you are not sure where Beta version was installed, open App Manager and check whether there is a memory icon shown besides Podcast. If yes, your Podcast Beta version is installed on memory card (or hard drive); otherwise, it is installed on phone memory.

3.After upgrading your Podcasting app:
If you did not remove (uninstall) Podcast Beta version before upgrading to ver 1.00.02, your default directories will not be updated to the one comes with ver 1.00.2.

In order to show the new default directories, open "Directory" view, select "Options" then select "Restore Default." The new Directories should now show.

The new default directories are: Featured, International, Podcast Discovery, and Video

You can now update your Multimedia Computer (yes, these are not just Phones anymore!) software via the Nokia Phone Software Update tool at nokia.com (For example, N91 software update should allow N914GB to play Digital Rights Management (DRM) protected wma files transferred via Windows Media Player 10 with the update)

BUT

4. Things to watch for when you are upgrading your Mulitmedia Computer (MC) software via Nokia Software Update (NSU):
a. Always do a backup on your phone memory before NSU via PC Suite.
NOTE:Harddrive or large MMCs (1GB+) are not recommended to be backed up using PC Suite.
b. After NSU is completed, restore your backup FIRST via PC Suite before proceeding with upgrading your Podcasting app to ver 1.00.0

October 25, 2006 N91 Tips & Hints Posted by Steven at 07:02 PM | Categories: N91

BlackN91_8GB.jpg

Although not specific to Nokia Podcasting (and posted earlier on other S60 blogs), here is a link for some excellent tips and hints for the N91 created by those good folks at the N91 Blog.

http://n91.bloggercomm.com/2006/10/nokia_updates_n91_tips.php

The Nokia Podcasting application was originally written for and tested with the N91. So the N91 is optimized to give you the best audio podcast experience with its 4GB hard drive, WLAN, 3.5 jack for headphones, and NSeries Music Player (which allows you to create Playlists of your podcast collections).

What? You havent seen the Playlist functionality for Podcasting (and Music)?

Open your N91 Music Player and find "Playlists" from the main music menu to open and create. You can also add a Podcast to a playlist from the "Add to Playlist" in the Options menu when the episode is selected.

Transfer Feeds & Directories between Devices Posted by Steven at 01:02 PM | Categories: Nokia Podcasting

Darla Mack had asked about how to make the podcast feeds easy to transfer between compatible devices. (See Darla's post: http://darlamack.blogs.com/darlamack/2006/10/exporting_feeds.html)

You can already send both OPML Directories and RSS feeds with Nokia Podcasting to other users who have Nokia Podcasting installed.

In summary, just find the podcast you want to send from "Podcasts", click "Option" then choose "Send" (via Bluetooth or Multimedia). Your other device will receive a Bluetooth message which will add the feed to your Directories where you can then subscribe to it.

Send1.jpg Send2.jpg Send3.jpg

Here is the step by step guide (It looks more complicated than it really is.):

1. Sending an RSS Feed
a. Open Nokia Podcasting and open "Podcast." Find a previously subscribed Podcast or manually add a favourite podcast feed (Podcast>Options>New Podcast)

b. Choose the podcast that you want to transfer. Click "Options>Send>Via Bluetooth (or Via Multimedia)"

c. If Bluetooth (BT), then Nokia Podcasting will then search for other BT devices which are turned on and not hidden. Choose the device you want to transfer the RSS Feed to.

d. The receiving device will show "Receive message via Bluetooth from DEVICENAME?" (Yes/ No). Click "Yes"
The receiving device will get a message which will be a Bluetooth icon with Podcasting.opml.

e. Click to open the Bluetooth Message to see "Import OPML File to Podcasting directories?" (Yes/No). Click "Yes". The sent RSS feed will show in the "Directories" section in a "Received" folder.

f. Exit that view and lanch the Podcating application. Open "Directories" and then open the "Received" folder. Click the name of the Podcast to subscribe.

2. Sending an OPML Directory

To Transfer full OPML directories, follow the same steps only start from "Directories" instead of from "Podcasts."

TIP: You can create your own free OPML directory from www.opmlmanager.com. You can manually add your new opml file to "Directories" (Directories > Options > New > Web Directory) or save and import (Directories>Options>Import OPML File)

Once your OPML file is on your Nokia Podcasting, then you can share it with others.

Hope that helps.

October 12, 2006 Nokia Podcasting: Search Posted by Steven at 10:27 AM | Categories: Nokia Podcasting, Search

The Nokia Podcasting application uses the search engine provided by DigitalPodcast.com.

If you are a Podcaster and would like Nokia Podcasting to be able to search for your show for free, register to DigitalPodcast.com and then choose "Add Podcast". When your podcast is accepted, it will be searchable from the Nokia Podcasting application.

For more information about this search, visit DigitalPodcast.com "Podcast Search Service"

Nokia Podcasting also lets you add your own favourite compatible search engines. (Podcasting Main > Options >Settings > Connection > Search Service URL )

An example of another compatible search engine is from The PodLounge:
Type the following into the "Search Service URL": http://mobile.thepodlounge.com/nokia_search.php?q=#

German Podcast Directory Search
http://www.podster.de/tag/#/rss

To restore defaults:
From "Connection", click "Options" and then choose "Restore Default"

Please use the "Comments" section below for feedback or suggestions.

October 11, 2006 Nokia Podcasting Posted by Steven at 01:20 PM | Categories: Nokia Podcasting

This is the blog for the Nokia Podcasting Application. (www.nokia.com/podcasting)

This blog will be updated with news, hints, and discussions about mobile podcasting for listeners and creators with a focus on the Nokia Podcasting app.

The Nokia Podcasting Application allows you to search, discover, subscribe, download podcasts over the air and play, manage and share podcasts on your mobile device. The application is a free download for Nokia NSeries S60 3rd edition devices.

NOTE: Nokia Podcasting is optimized for the N91 and recommended for WLAN enabled NSeries Devices such as N91, N80, N93, and N95. Although Nokia Podcasting can also be compatible with other Nokia S60 3rd edition devices (for example E61), the application has not yet been optimized for other devices and usage is "as is".

Download the updated Nokia Podcasting application (25 Oct 2006)
Download file: Nokia Podcasting 1.00.2

See Updating Nokia Podcasting: FAQ for more information

The new directories are:
Featured
International
Podcast Discovery
Video

Also note that the downloading animation (the spinning circle) is no longer animated. (its not a bug. Its a feature!) The cute little spinner will be missed, but because it refreshed the screen about 18 times per second, it was a battery hog. This version should be kinder to your battery life. Which is always a good thing.
