April 30, 2008 Time to update (Mobile Web Server 1.3 beta) Posted by Jukka Eklund at 01:10 PM | Categories: Announcements

The next evolutionary release of Mobile Web Server is now out in the wild. This release's mission is simple: it's a technology update. We have been "under the hood" and brought in latest code from the open source branch, changing and fixing things. This will secure further development with the platform. Having said that, there are some feats for the end user as well (pictured below). Some related development will emerge later, once this release is deployed. As always you will be the first to know about all new stuff!

In Finland it's time to go and celebrate Vappu (Labor day), so please excuse me for now. Go do the update, and share any comments!

Successfully updated the Mobile Web Server on E61i. When running locally via Wi-Fi, it seems to run faster then prior versions.

Thank you,
Paul Spencer

Thanks Paul, that is good to hear :)

I'm unable to update from the previous version (1.2) on E61i.
Tried the update which failed (unable to install). I then removed the already installed python and web server packages and tried a full installation which also fails (again with "Unable to install").

For the full installation I do get the questions "Install WebServer?" (details about Web Server 1.03(0) follows), select the memory card (details about Symbian OS PIPS 1.02(0), Open C GLIBRARY 1.00(0), Open C LIBSSL 1.00(0), Python for S90 1.04(3), REST API 1.00(0), httpd-2_2_4 Server 1.00(0), Symbian OS Pipes 1.01(0) are showing up), accept the licence and then "Installing" starts but aborts (more or less directly at the beginning) with an "Unable to install!") message.

Now the phone neither has the old version nor can install the newer version :-(

I was unable to update (from 1.2 to 1.3) on E61i and it took quite a while to find the root cause for this problem.

I had P.I.P.S. 1.1 installed (in phone memory) and the P.I.P.S. update to 1.2 doesn't work :-(

Solution: Remove P.I.P.S. 1.1 manually, install new version 1.2 and the (re)install web server.

Maybe this information helps others during installation problems.

Bye,
Wolfgang.

Wolfgang, glad you solved it. There are bound to be issues with Open C components (like PIPS) if you have them already installed by yourself, and then try update MWS (which now includes all of the components). Anyhow, it should install fine if you first uninstall any Open C libs and stuff you have previously installed and then install MWS.

Having to confirm every component while installing is not very intuitive...
Worse : I had the same error as Wolfgang and had to delete every component manually (there was no MWS in the App manager, and the icon had dissappeared from the menu).

Anyway, it works now, and I'm working on the Facebook app :)

Arthur, it's not intuitive but the reason is Open C. For the next release we have to wrap everything behind an application installer to make it easier (like N-Gage). It will be easier when Open C is built in (S60 3.2), but nobody has those devices yet..

Hey, just wondering - would it be a good idea to minimize all graphics on the Mobile Webserver generated webpage, and so increase webserver responding time? I'd say, at the moment for me the actual performance is much more important, than all those graphical decorations on the page.

And it should be still possible to create a neat webpage with CSS styling only.

Or, maybe I'm late, and there is already some nice "ultralite" skin for my mobile site already available?

Alex, you are right and the mobile theme is going to available soon :) Check out http://jukka.mymobilesite.net

Cool skin! Eager to get it too :)

I am just now seeing this. Looks like I'll have yet another MWS piece to write up. I wonder if my mobile (N75) will be able to take the attention. Hehehe.

Antoine, yes you are somewhat pushing the limits there :) Hope you have flat-rate data. I guess you don't mind writing a short piece about your experiments in this blog?

Here is the theme for you:

I'd be up for writing a short piece on my experiments here. Would be nice to pare down what has already been written into a smaller bit :)

Actually just getting to go at installing 1.3 now. I'm kinda moving ahead of another MWS Experiment that I have planned, but this one will be much longer in duration and require a good deal more patience on my end.

Antoinen, that's a great idea! Just send me your "story" and I'll put you up as a "guest blogger" :)

Hallo Jukka,

at first THANK YOU, MWS is a very nice aplication. I use it not very often but if so, i realy need it.

Now i tryed to update from Version 1.2 to 1.3 and i think i have the same Problem as Wolfgang (see his posts).
I can run MWS and it shows me Version 1.3 but if i start the server i get a (interner Server Fehler) Error.

My englisch is bad (i am a german) and i am not sure if i only have to delete the "Symbian OS PIPS" ore if there mor things to delete befor i can update MWS.

If i remember right, for the last update (to 1.2 ?) i have to delete an other file but dont know the name.

Please can someone give me a checklist what to do? In german will be great, ore simple englisch.
Hope i will not loose my settings from the old version.

For future Updates i wish ther is a easy to understand Help that tells me wat to do. Or the Update-sis-file can check the files and give me a message.

Thanks for reading my stupid english :-)

@Scotty: Getting started document is in German too: http://mymobilesite.net/files/MobileWebServer_GS_de_v13.pdf. I think you need to first uninstall manually all PIPS and Python installations, and then try installing MWS again. If you install Full MWS you will loose any settings, but here are instructions on how to back up them: http://blogs.s60.com/mws/2007/10/backing_up_web_server_data_1.html. I hope this helps, I can't write German..

@Antoine: My emails details are in the About page, thanks!

Mhm... I'm glad there's some geographic info now. It would be really great if a link to, say, google maps using this info would be part of the default installation.

Whats really bad about the new version is that I still cannot access my contacts on my Nokia 6110 Navigator (although this should be one of the key benefits of having a web server on your mobile).
This was a known issue in the old version, as I understand, so I expected it to be fixed.
The only thing that changed is that now I get an error (500) while with 1.2 there was an empty page. :(

Posted by: ossi1967 | June 14, 2008 03:04 PM

ossi, since it's not fixed there is probably some problem in Python and your phonebook information. That's very hard to fix since we don't have your phone data :(

Hallo Jukka,

thank you for helping. (See your post at May 25)
I was make a backup and installed MWS new. Now it works :-))

And now, today i updatet to Version 1.4
That was easy and it works fine.

My questions to the new version i will post in the new "Mobile Web Server 1.4: out now!"-comments.

.. try my best in english :-))
