Report of the Week I: Maps 2.0
Our very first Report of the Week for Maps 2.0 comes from obsidial, an Ambassador we haven’t heard from before. It is a powerhouse report, full of the kinds of details we like. And at the end he throws down a gauntlet to a competitor (oh no he didn’t!)
“This is a story that I could not wait to relate to you guys…. I was on my way back home from the airport after picking up my brother-in-law, who was on a business trip. I’m known as the family “cell phone guy” so in fact he had actually called me while he was gone to ask about an AT&T MediaNet issue, so we talked about that for a while. A few minutes later, he asked me about what radio station I was listening to, and I laughed that it was actually an Internet radio station (Leo Laporte’s TWiT.am live broadcast) streaming over 3G on my N95 which in turn is then piped into my car’s speakers via a Nokia A2DP gateway. He was absolutely floored when I pulled the N95 off of the windshield mount and handed it to him. “I thought that was your GPS?!” he said. I had been running Nokia Maps all this time on the N95, with the display in landscape mode and he did not know it was my phone that was navigating us home. I then talked him thru the functions of Nokia Maps (since I was driving of course) and let him play around for a while. He had been a big user of Google Maps liked the Nokia Maps ability to download maps ahead of time, unlike Google. It was about now that I explained that I’m a bit of a Nokia fanboy
in that I’m Nokia “Ambassador”, and told him that it’s kind of an informal word of mouth advertising program. Also since he was “captive” in my car, he could tell me to be quiet any time and I’d oblige, however after this initial look at the N95, it was he who was asking more and more questions. We then went thru a few more Maps features, like the look up from contact list, and the walking mode, but then I got a little cocky and started talking about the other things the N95 can do. It was a long ride, so I definitely had enough time to show off some of the amazing things I use like Sports Tracker, Mobile Web Server and the Podcasting app. In the end, he looked at his phone, the AT&T Tilt (which is a very well spec’d phone too) and said “This thing is supposed to do all that stuff…but it doesn’t do it half as well as yours.”
Thanks obsidial! You’ve earned yourself an E71 loaner. I’m about to run down to shipping to put it in the mail for you. Check it out for 2 months (maybe even let your bro-in-law borrow it
and then send it on back to us.
Tune in next Friday for the Maps 2.0 Report of the Week for Week II. Until then, happy WoMing!
