May 16, 2008 Report of the Week (7)....plus the Ambassadors go green Posted by Daniel Shugrue at 03:01 PM | Categories:

We got some interesting entries for our "Transport7" theme...the idea was to show alternative forms of transport around the world, in honor of bike week. Lots of interesting stuff from India (I'm beginning to see a pattern here) including our favorite from noel in Mumbai:

bullock cart - Share on Ovi

Check out the rest of the pictures here:

Next week's theme is "Print8". We want to see what magazines and newspapers the S60 Ambassadors are reading. Lots of languages, strange typefaces, different materials -- we want to see the variety of materials that make up the S60 Ambassador days.

We had another record-setting week in terms of number of reports...and lots of contenders for RoTW. The dust has settled in the Boston/Dallas/Espoo/Tampere office tho and we are ready to declare EvilPhish our winner. EvilPhish gave us this great report (love the Ricky Gervais reference btw...) and will be getting his N82 loaner soon:

BlueToons I'm in the midst of a project where I am integrating a few different groups into a single new team. Things got a little tedious today so I suggested that we head out for an early (and long) lunch. Myself and 3 others jumped into my car (with the others in another) which I happened to have recently upgraded with a new stereo that supports A2DP streaming (which means I can stream stereo audio wirelessly through the BlueTooth connection from my N82 and/or other devices) so I decided to play a podcast we'd been discussing earlier (Ricky Gervais, for those who need the minutiae) that had been downloaded using the Nokia Podcast application.

The conversation immediately jumped from the topic of the podcast to
what trick little piece of kit allowed me to do such a thing, which
provided a nice opportunity to pass my phone around the car (I didn't
have much say in this honestly, as I was driving) and explain about
the S60 platform, touching on the Ambassador program (I keep my
notepad and pen in my armrest) and once we arrived at the restaurant
I made doubly sure to take lots of pics and some video that I
uploaded to Share on Ovi. Once we got back to the office I sent
everyone an e-mail with a link.

The only real down side of this all was the fact that I didn't get
much work done for the rest of the day as I was deluged with Amazon
and eBay links asking 'Is this a good phone that will do what yours
does?'.

Honorable mention this week is Week2 winner RobertSe. We love the way the truth shines through Robert's reports....amazing level of detail and the scene springs to life:

I was out walking my Shih-Tzu this afternoon as it had become a
beautiful day and the dog was agitating for some exercise.
Leash? Check!
Doggy clean-up bag (scented)? Check!
Water for dog? Check!
Phone? Nokia N95-1 Check!!
It's a 1 mile loop around our lake and usually takes 20 minutes or so.
The dog is a Shih-Tzu after all, and it's usually a very social walk.
The neighbors are chatty. We set out at a blistering pace, about 2
miles per hour, and made our way first to the beach. We stop there, I
pull off the leash, and Ginger (my dog) chases anything I throw. There
were some kids around, playing on the swing set and having some
pre-swim season fun. Young kids, maybe 5 or 6 years old, and they went
crazy when they saw the dog. Being ultra-friendly Ginger ran over to
them to play. I took some quick snaps with my N95's camera and a short
video clip that captured the delighted squeals of the kids as my dog
romped on the sand with them.

When one mother came to collect her little girl she was met with
protests and howls of disapproval, both from her daughter and the
other kids. Too much fun to quit! I killed a few minutes showing the
pictures to her mother. The screen on the N95 is gorgeous and the 5 MP
camera takes some wonderfully clear and detailed shots. She was
shocked when I explained that yes, it's a camera, but it's also my
phone! I offered to email her the pictures of her daughter with Ginger
and she gave me her email address. The pics hit he mail right in front
of her. I told her they'd be waiting for her in her inbox when she got
home. Yup, this phone does email too. I told her very briefly that the
phone runs on Symbian S60, which she didn't really understand, and I
reinforced the point that the main thing is that S60 is open. That
means you can customize your phone to do a ton of things, especially
the things that are important to you. I also said that I was an
"ambassador" for S60, which just means I like it a lot and talk about
it a lot. She laughed nervously like I was about to try to sell her
something. I showed her how not only could I send pictures to her
email address, but that I could also post them online to a sharing
site for friends and family to see. "You take the picture and 30
seconds later your family in another state can be looking at it on
their home computer. All free!"

What really knocked her out was the movie clip I showed her. Clear
picture and sound to boot! It didn't have her daughter in it so much
as one of the other kids, but the idea of movies on a camera phone was
revolutionary to her. Unfortunately, as impressed as she was, I got
the feeling she was a little overwhelmed and was beginning to look at
me like I was performing some kind of voodoo ritual. Impressive, but
probably over her head. I finished our conversation by saying the
phone certainly does a lot, even more than I showed her, but the
beauty is you can do as much as you're comfortable with. You don't
ever have to mess with email or online photo sharing if you don't
want. Phone only, or phone and still camera. It's all good. The phone
will do what YOU want it to do. I also stressed that this particular
phone, the Nokia N95, is a full-featured mobile phone. There are
plenty of other phones that run on S60 and are far more simple, yet
remain flexible. I hope she writes me an email about the pics I sent
her. I'd love to be able to get her reaction to the N95 after she's
had a chance to see the pictures!

Thanks so very much guys! The enthusiasm on the part of the organizers/director teams make participating in the S60 Ambassador program an absolute blast!

I am just getting around with the program because I am new to this and already been on much inspiration by all these goods.

I am beginning to enjoy the whole.
