Whoa there!

Browser Wars - April 14th, 2008 - Written by Peter Harbeson

OK, (ouch) everybody out there (bonk) in the blogosphere just (oof) take a deep (splat) breath! We are not backing away from Webkit no matter what you might have read on one of those new-fangled “website” things — I’ll have to get somebody to show me one sometime soon. As I understand it, one of our developers did some housekeeping on the Tiger branch of the webkit project, and some people thought it looked like we were backing away from the whole open-source project. No, no, no — it’s just that we’re focusing on the newer Leopard branch, we have a lot on our plates right now (you might have heard about Nokia’s acquisition of Trolltech, for example) and there’s only so much we can do at once. It’s not that we don’t appreciate the attention, of course, but any talk about S60 Browser backing away from Webkit isn’t true. Gotta run; just heard Elvis was spotted in Boston Commons…

*cursor here. thanks for throwing tomatoes at pesky human, why no cheese too?*

    Pleased to hear it.

    Silly intertubes! :-P
..oh, and say “hi” to Elvis for me!

    *whew*

Nice hearing an official word about this whole fiasco.

So, where is the leopard branch then? :P

    Good to hear.

Anyway, I just wanted to mention that blog post and noticed that it really lacks a name, which makes referring to it kinda awkward. Why not give it some nice name?

Just noticed that my post doesn’t make much sense :D I meant a name for the browser…

The problem I see with this argument is that not making any more checkins to a project for eight months, even though the tree is broken, looks like much more than just “housekeeping” to me.

There is a lengthy thread on FN Discussion by people trying to make the WebKit work, but there hasn’t been any word from the technical WebKit team since Summer 2007, so I believe it is understandable that people are starting to wonder aloud.

If it takes a post from someone with an @apple.com e-mail address to make people take notice, all the better. To me, this still feels as if at least parts of Nokia still quite “get” Open Source and Community involvement.

To Cursor: get up and fight! Man or mouse? ;-)

Ps: please don’t misunderstand my comment as being critical of the idea of moving WebKit development to a newer branch that is closer to the current main line of development in other ports - the S60WebKit branch seemed to have lived a bit of a life of its own, so this is certainly good news…

The only thing I was a bit concerned about is that there was very little communication from Nokia over the last year about the fate of the port, so a lot of people seem to have banged their head needlessly against making work what was out there, when probably all it would have taken was an announcement like: “If you want to hack WebKit, you’d better wait until we have rebased the branch” or something like that.

    Hey there!

We’re in the process of building a web-application that is going to be used from the web browser on the S60 platform. However, we are having two requests:

Could you please make the Tab-key work? We’re hacking a JS-implementation of the Tab-key behavior, but it is not even close to regular tab key behavior. We really need this for filling in forms.

Why doesn’t the onbeforeunload-event work? That would also be very useful so we can notice our users that they can’t go back once they’ve filled in part of a form.

Side comment… If this is the case then someone in Nokia.com (website side) has NO clue that webkit is being used. As of a week or so ago, the main nokia.com or nokia.co.uk (really any nokia regional website) doesn’t render properly on any webkit based browser. This includes the browser on my e61i or even on Safari on a Mac or PC.

Does the webside of the S60 development team ensure that nokia actually tests the corporate website on the actual browser shipping on the phones??? Or is it only supposed to support IE7 which means that Nokia admits the web browser in S60 is useless that it can’t even properly render the corporate website.

There still isn’t any visible progress, and there is no sign of a newer browser in any of your new phones. I hope you will be able to tell us something soon!

    Hello,

Does the appearance of the Gphone with Chrome- WebKit based browser - gonna change the attitude towards the stand alone browser in S60? Or we should just give up on it…???
