June 26, 2007 But seriously... Posted by Peter Harbeson at 07:12 AM | Categories:

Did you know that in 1981 Apple Computer was the biggest personal computer company? The Apple 2 (at various times it was the "Apple ][" and the "Apple //", typographically) ruled that market. 1981 was also the year that IBM introduced their first PC. Here's what Apple said then:

So 26 years later, as the iPhone debuts later this week, Welcome, Apple, seriously!

(The Apple ad, old Apple logo, and IBM logo are, obviously, property of their owners and used here as an historical commentary.)

This post reminds me of the book - "Fire in the Valley" - that I just read about the personal computer revolution.

I recommend it.

Wasn't the irony of this Apple ad the fact that IBM took over the PC market from Apple, after this over-confident welcome?

So are you implicitly saying that the history will repeat itself, and Apple (now the newcomer) will take the mobile device market from Nokia?

I hope we have learned not to repeat the mistakes that certain companies did in the 80's :)

If you're going to tease Apple (and you should!), the least you could do is remix their "Welcome" advertisement with some statistics about either s60 and/or the mobile industry.

I agree. If there's one thing Apple is doing to the mobile industry, it's shaking up manufacturers and the historical manufacturer-carrier relationship, but also introducing a whole new class of mobile users to the internet on their phones.
