Widgets - April 16th, 2007 - Written by Peter Harbeson

This is the day we can finally talk about some new developments in the S60 Browser. The big one is that we’re supporting Widgets — applications created with web technology instead of “traditional” development tools. If you can write JavaScript code and design a nice web-based UI, you can create your own widget. Symbian development has required a big committment of time and effort. We’re hoping this reduces those a lot.

Here’s the official website — not a great deal of technical information, but at least a nice Flash presentation, and this time we have the world spinning in the proper direction!
I’m sure everyone’s also clamoring for the press release. I haven’t actually read it, but somebody must appreciate these. Uh…right?

We’ll have more useful information soon, and in the meantime if you’re thinking that writing a widget might be fun, take a look at other widget platforms for inspiration. Nobody’s widgets are exactly cross platform, but MacOS Dashboard widgets are similar to S60 Browser widgets.

This, of course, is the next step in our Secret Plan for World Domination (I’m talking about the Browser group, not Nokia). We just replace everything with widgets! True, we haven’t completely figured out the “make a call” issue, but we’ll get right on it! :-) There might be a few things we have to do first…

Anyway, Happy Widget Day everyone, and watch this space for more information. As an aside, it’s surprisingly tough to blog when you’re working on things you can’t really talk about. My plan is to completely reverse the recent dearth of postings.

Please do tell us that the browser is going to be updated to support these also in 3eFP0 and 3eFP1. Otherwise the widgets and other improvements are quite useless before everyone buys a new phone. And that’ll be 1-2 years from now…

This is cool stuff, but where’s the download for the FP1 browser? Thought that was supposed to happen …

This widget stuff is a long way off!

I don’t think that the Browser can be updated for existing 3rd phone, but please, disprove me!

Widgets will be available in SP2 according to the anouncement and I suppose it was a counter anouncement for the MS anouncement for a similar idea “MS’s own flash”.

Peter I do understand that you cannot tell everything we would like to know, and I am patient. Although would be happy if someone could comment on the updateable sis browser issue… Can you comment anything on the status?

or is it still on a strategic planner’s desk?…

We would like to know more about your upcoming widget engine.

Just to let you know: In a few days we plan to release a beta version of our widget desktop for mobiles which will start with support for the S60 browser. This will bring Apple Dashboard widgets to the phone, with almost no conversion.

Five months since the last post, more so for Nokia’s we’ll consider it, a definate maybe, ect and still no word. I wonder why, don’t you? Caould it be cause of the way we acted? Yes, yes, I think so.
Forum after forum I see complaints over this improved browser not being ported back to previous os9.1 devices like my E61. Some polite people but really just sheer nasty remarks for the most part. Would you want to help someone who said things in the same tone you told to Nokia cause I’m not feeling very motivated. Feelings are important but there is a way to act. Nokias’ image is just important to you as ours is to them. So a few of you might leave. Yeah we lost some real winners there, ouch, make it stop.
Secondly, companies don’t make money Servicing previous customers but to cater to the needs of future customers. None of us was ripped off here! We knew what we were paying for at the time of purchase. Nokia never once said these phones entittle any of us to anything beyond a one year warrenty though this company has taken it upon themselves to do so. We have widsets, podcasting, shoutcast, image search, and now even a beta testing area for more new apps comming forth. Nokia isn’t billing for these but rather providing new and innovated ways to use OUR phones at THEIR expense. Like any one here has the right to demand Nokia to do this or else I’m leaving. Ungreateful.
To the people who were polite and sincere in theire requests, look around and see who can be ruining it for you and don’t be like one of them cause’ you didn’t get what you asked for. To the haters’ move the hell on. Buy from LG or motorola. Send me some hate mail while your at it rainingportland@aol.com To Nokia, keep on spankin’ those geniuses of yours cause I wanna die in a Nokia mobile phone/caskit!
