Readers Can Help the Browser Group

General - March 6th, 2007 - Written by Peter Harbeson

There seem to be a number of people who want the S60 Browser to be available outside the S60 platform release system — for example, as a SIS file — and be upgradeable without, you know, reflashing your entire phone (or buying a new one). Believe it or not, we agree. But we don’t control everything… yet…<note_to_self>insert evil laugh here</note_to_self> and so far our argument hasn’t carried the day. Some more suggestions can’t hurt, either to the S60 Wish List or to Nokia. You’ll probably have to navigate to your region, then look for a Contact Us link.

Like it says in Alice’s Restaurant, if two people do it, they’ll think…*ahem* well, you have to check the lyrics for that, but if fifty people do it, it’s a movement!

count me in for S60 Browser as a SIS file…

Yes. I agree. If you call them “multimedia computer”, then they should be able to update also their core software…

Great move! I would also suggest to make a statement here. I think if everyone crying at these pages -including myself- puts here a comment again for summarizing previous reasoning on the side of upgradeable browser, this would be a great page to link when complaining at the strategic manager’s desk. :-)
BUT before we do that, maybe you should put here a topic with a more telling title, so people who acctually come here can see what it is all about.
You change the title (or add a new one), we call Nokia hot line. Do we have a deal? ;-) Regards: Aron

Thank You for the more telling title!

I am calling Nokia tomorrow, and will link Your topic here and there.

I suppose someone could mention this movement in Tommi’s fresh “Abandoning crap” topic, as I think this would fit in well there… The proposed sis browser instead of the “opposed” OS restricted browser. I have great hopes! :-) Thanks & Regards!

Give me a browser I can use on the N91-2, fw upgrade, sis, magic; I don’t care. Or give me the ability to add more RAM to the device.

I have submitted a wish (Id=395) so that the “S60 browser be upgradeable through a sis file.”

Apparently the moderator has rejected it without any explanation as to the reason.

What use is a wish system if you reject people’s request without letting users voice their opinions on the topic?

Can you guys investigate what is going on here?
    Thanks.

This is the only hope to be sure that the S60 will survive, for (not-so) older phones, like E61, E70.
I’d like to see soon sis files for the s60 browser !

Is there any organized petition or anything on this yet? :) Nothing makes me feel more ripped off then when my 4 month old E70 barfs back ‘not enough memory’ I was really hoping new versions of the browser would help solve this.. a .sis upgrade would be perfect, it could live in the c: or my memory card without trouble I’m sure ( I believe files in the c: and mem card take precidence over the ROM somehow, seems to be how the guys are customizing fonts and stuff ).

Here is a corresponding topic, where people complain about the non-upgradeability of the feature packs and why it hurts the most: is non-upgradeability of the browser.

    http://blogs.s60.com/tommi/2006/11/can_i_upgrade_my_nokia_exxnxx.html

If Nokia would decide to give us the sis browser, that decision would solve the major issue of browser upgradeability. Please decision makers listen to all these and those people!

Thank You for the Nokia E70! I truly believe it is revolution. Please maintain its software regularly, including the Web-browser. Please give us the sis browser!

To Adam: yes, this is the movement. Please let Nokia know about it in your home country.

    Regards!

Couldn’t you just give us compiled .sis files of Reindeer? Or how does Reindeer relate to the S60 Browser? (maybe an idee for another blog post)

    Thanks

Somone from the browser team, please answer the the question before this one!
Is it so that we are getting the SIS version of web 2.0 - and maybe more?

Can you please tell us also if we will have compatibility with the new Flash player - like could we watch normal YouTube and not just the “mobile” version.

    Thanks and Regards:

Yes please… I think releasing this new browser to us as a sis file is would be a very nice & important step from Nokia. Even more now when Microsoft is releasing their new browser “Deepfish” for Windows Mobile free to their users. I really hope what I’ve read at AAS is true.

  17. Gert wrote

Yes, and please also USER FRIENDLY Contacts and Calender applications. I.e. applications that can stand up against native Palm applications. Thanks.

  18. Aron wrote

I feel guilty for mentioning the updateable real player without a wider description of what I meant. After that comment how can I blame someone to ask for a better calendar…

So here is an explanation why the updateable real player is not off topic, but very much “ON” topic here:

    1. The updateable browser should handle the imbeded videos correctly, so my guess is that it requires the video player being updateable as well.

    2. The same thing goes for the flash player. It is inevitable to use the newer flash player in the new browser.

so please, no off topic whining here!

We have quite enough “relevant” thimgs to whine about… :-) By the way I do agree with the view of the Microsoft competition.

    Please give us Web 2.0…

    Thanks!

    BIG DAY today!
Nokia is anouncing the decision about the updateable web browser.

There is however a warning sign, which frightens me:

There are hints out there, which indicate, that the updateable browser will only be available from FP1.

Do you see how tragicomic is that if it is true?

The origin of the downloadable WEB browser discussion is that Tommi hinted that FP1 will not be available for 3rd edition devices. This statement outraged many people, and some of them started to ask, do we really need to buy a new device if we want an update to the browser?

Than came this topic and the light at the end of the tunnel that finally Nokia does support us and does listen to custumer complaints.

And now? … Will the very people who initiated the idea of the updateable browser will be left out in the cold?

I am hoping that in the afternoon I can come back here and apologize for writting bullshit… :-)
Please Nokia, give us “poor” 3rd edition users who lobbied so hard for the sis browser, the one thing we need the most!

    the updated browser…

It seems the audio broadcast and the corresponding anouncement today had nothing to do with the browser release. So my previous worries did not come into reality and I am so happy for that! Sorry for the mistake!

one thing is curious thoug: On what ground some people are expecting the new browser to be coming only for FP1 devices?

Is that a legitimate thing to worry about?
    Haho!

S60 team! Could this happen that only FP1 will support the updateable browser?

Please cheer us up, that there is hope for Web 2.0 with S60 v3 too!

    Thanks and Best Regards!

I would be amazed if they left us 3rd Ed (non FP1) users out in the cold. Really really hope they’ll give us the new browser… Otherwise I’ll consider switching to windows mobile in the future… I’m getting tired of not getting these kind of updates for my S60 phones from Nokia. They aren’t the cheapest phones in the world, I think Nokia should take better care of their customers. Releasing the new browser for current 3rd ed devices would be a nice move (as I’ve said before) and would definitely give me more positive feelings about Nokia & considerably raise the posibility that I’ll stick with S60 in the future aswell.

I’m wondering if anyone can please help me get Major Nelson’s (from Xbox) RSS feed working on the N95.

I put in the feed (manually or by capturing it from his website http://www.majornelson.com):
    http://feeds.feedburner.com/MajorNelson

And the N95 Browser says “Unable to open feed”. It works fine in the Resco RSS app, but I’d prefer to use the Web Feeds option in the builtin browser if I can.

    Any help please?

    Thanks,
    Shane.
