Like probably everybody else, now I want an iPhone! However, I couldn’t help noticing that the announcement blurbs included this:

“Safari — the most advanced web browser ever on a portable device…”

Maybe it’s just me, but wouldn’t you think that since our browser and Safari are pretty much the same thing… I know it’s just marketing, the iPhone looks really cool, and everybody introducing a cool new product gets to lead the crowd in cheers, but geez. OK, harrumphing over. It’s still a cool-looking phone.

I noticed that earlier too. To date the S60 browser is the best I’ve used on a phone, for navigation it simply can’t be beat. I’m not sure about the iPhone either. No 3G puts me off. I suppose we’ll see when it finally launches in the UK. I’ve still got my eyes on the N95 :)

Indeed. What struck me was that a lot of the things the iPhone was shown doing, current Symbian OS-based devices have been doing for months, if not years. Including Safari-based web browsing, as you say.

“5 years ahead of any other phone”? Give me strength. Most Nseries smartphones have higher specs and function lists. And are cheaper and available now.

Apple’s design is top notch, of course. And will spur S60 and UIQ on to new usability heights, hopefully 8-)

Don’t get me wrong, I like the S60 browser, and think it’s by far the best browser available on S60, but I *have* to use Opera Mini, because I am one of those people with an E70, so the S60 browser runs out of memory after 2 maybe 3 pageviews.

Just to reiterate what Steve Jobs said (and have confirmed since)… The iPhone will have the ‘full’ Safari, not just the engine. So it’s likely that useability may be slightly better.

I hope the S60 developments will improve the UI now, because although you can’t install third-party applications on the iPhone, I’m still tempted.
