« How "Different" is the OSS Browser? | Main | Cursors »
You might expect that in a browser development group, we use our browser all the time. And you'd be right! But we don't use it in all the same ways it's going to be used as we ship it. We tend to test specific things, both our personal favorite sites and unique use cases we're working on. We compare it to other browsers, often using two or more side-by-side to understand the differences.
The problem with this, of course, is that we probably miss things that "real people" do with our browser in the rest of the world. Some of these things don't occur to us as likely. Some of them don't occur to us at all!
One use I recently read about was using a mobile browser for five and six hours at a time. Even if it wasn't our browser, the sheer amount of time was amazing. It must take very young eyes to stand up to the strain of that. That got me thinking about how we could make long-term browsing sessions on an S60 more usable?
Increasing the font size in the browser is obvious, I suppose, but it seems like there's more to it. Does anyone reading this blog browse for long periods on an S60 (or any other mobile device, for that matter)? If so, what bugs you? What would help?

AS i using s60 series phone i have three main problems

is that there is one software name theme diy in which u will able to make ur own theme and select the wallpaper of ur choice but its get to time to make and install theme is any one knows pls tell.
3.)from s60 browser when i downloads zip/rar file it will shows u a error (file not supported)
but some there is some sites which have zip file when i download it
it downloads in the form of j2me or something else but i succed to download nd save in my memory and and run it froms x-plore.
cant any one tell me that haow can i dowloads all the zip/rar file .
there is one question mentioned above i have the answer
Can't stress enough how good it would be that E61's browser could:
- select and copy text;
- save images
- save linked files instead of just opening them
- autofill forms (specially passwords)
If this was added, the browser would be almost perfect!

I agree, page-up/page-down shortcuts are a good idea.
But a useful workaround for getting quickly to the bottom / top: press 8 for Page View, then scrolling is REALLY fast. Click when you're at the bottom/top to go back to normal view.
Posted by: Franklin DavisKeyboard shortcut for Page Up/ Page Down is a must. Scrolling to the end of page is very tiring on fingers.

Posted by: Francis Augusto Medeiros | July 15, 2007 08:31 AMHi Folks!
So many questions ... but where can I find answers? Is there any browser out there, that allows you to copy text from webpages? Maybe in a beta version?
Or is there any release date for such an innoative feature, that is elementary for even the lightest pc or mac web browsers?
Thanks for your help and greetings from Austria,
Thomas

I second the page up/page down keyboard shortcut request. For example, try using Google's mobile reader in the browser and you'll soon see why this is so important. "O" for page down and "8 for page up??
Posted by: CW | November 17, 2006 03:34 PMThis is a very cool blog. Being that I am on the web dev/design side of the browser and not the actual browser side, hearing your opinions and views does make a nice and refreshing change of pace. My normal device is a Treo 650, and its mainly a laptop replacement. For that reason, the browser gets a whole lot of work, and as always there is room for improvement.
I played (again) with an E62 yesterday and while it is that I really like the browser, I noticed something that made me go uhmmm. The usability aspect of it is just outstanding IMO. It seems though that the web developer in me sees a handheld browser that is not using the '@media handheld' designation but using the '@media screen' one for rendering sites (that aren't using server side scripting to change the display type). Is this just a figment of my imagination, and if not, could you explain more or less how that works within the browser.
Thanks for being open on aspects of the S60 Browser. This blog really has some great potential to kickstarting a few of us developers for designing for mobiles more often.

Posted by: Patrick | November 2, 2006 01:39 PMThe most obvious flaw in the S60 browser (at least the version in the E62) is the inability to select and copy text. The standard S60 shift+toggle behavior ought to work in the browser too.
More generally, you could use control/num+toggle to allow things like opening a link in a new window or downloading an image rather than opening the link it's on top of.
Posted by: platron | November 2, 2006 11:32 AMi love this browser...but i found something wrong with it!! for example i didn't find a way to save images while i'm browsing web pages! or a way to copy&paste text in web pages!!
and also...will we be able to install browser 2.0 in all s60 3rd edition phones(n80/n91/ect...)??
congratulations for yuor new blog, i think it's so usefull!!
bye
Posted by: saxen | November 2, 2006 10:17 AMI use the browser pretty heavily, often my phone is my only internet connection for a week or so. I'd like to see a Firefox plugin that syncs a certain folder of links with my phone, and vice versa. Typing in links on the phone can be tiresome, as can visiting each site and then bookmarking it. The thing connects to the internet, it'd be neat to have some sort of bookmark syncing solution that does so automatically, everytime I connect.
Posted by: Ricky C | November 2, 2006 09:54 AMHm, can't explain my thoughts on this because of new version (2.0) of browser not available for now. As I can read in reviews, version 2.0 includes many things I'd like to have in mobile browser.
Posted by: Victor Samohin | November 2, 2006 09:28 AMThis is not exactly a browser-specific issue, but scrolling with the E70-style "knob" (which is in quite a few other devices as well) is a pain once you start using it for long periods of time. It's just not a natural movement, because you're not pressing - you're sort of pulling with the thumb.
I'd much rather see dedicated scroll keys (and a select key), e.g. using the keypad as a four-way scroller. Or some other way of making scrolling easier, since on a small screen you're gonna have to be doing it a lot anyway.
Posted by: Janne Jalkanen | November 2, 2006 06:12 AMSince i've got my E61, i hardly switch on my PC at home anymore. It's just easier and more practical to press the email key on the E61 to check if i've got new emails and refresh a page in the web browser to check if there have been new posts or articles posted on my favourite blogs and news sites.
So i browse the web daily and sometimes for quite a long time on my E61 (connected via my home wifi router most of the time).
I'm actually not using OSS but Opera Mobile. I tried to use OSS at the begining but it just didn't work for me. What i liked about OSS was how fast it was to start. Not instant but nearly. The visual history and mini-map were also 2 very cool and clever features that make mobile web browsing so much easier. And page rendering of course was pretty much perfect with all the pages i tried. But it does have 2 major flaws that are a deal-breaker to me:
- OSS is just not suitable for reading. When i browse the web on my E61, i mostly use it to read (as oposed to actually browse). Forum and blog posts, news articles... I've got all my sites in the bookmarks, i load them and i read. So how do you read a long article with OSS? At first, it's alright. The begining of the article is displayed and you can start reading. You can easily adjust the zoom ratio, font size...
But then you reach the bottom of the screen and need to scroll down. That's when things start to get ugly. There is no Page Up / Page down shortcuts. All you can do is press the joystick down to scroll. So the pointer is at the top of the screen and you press the joystick down. The pointer starts to move towards the bottom of the screen (which is not yet scolling) slowly, very slowly. Then suddently and without any warnings, it switches to super-dupper-XTra-fast-turbo scrolling speed and bang! you're at the very bottom of the page, way beyong the point where you wanted to stop. So you press the joystick up to scroll back up and once again, it starts slowly, very slowly then bang! you're back at the very top of the page again. Aaaaaaaaaargh!
- No multiple windows browsing. Being able to have more than one web page opened and loading a page in the background while reading another one is something that i've come to expect from any web browser. And that is not supported in OSS which means that i can't have say my 3 or 4 favourite blogs and forums opened at the same time and simply hit refresh whenever i want to see if there's been anything new posted.
These 2 points were addressed by Opera Mobile, which has Page Up/Down shortcuts and allows multiple windows browsing.
So what bugs me when browsing the web for a long time on a E61? Font size is not an issue for me. I don't have any problems with it.
The single most annoying thing to me must be speed and responsivness (or the lack of). With Opera Mobile, whenever you load a large web page with loads of images (or very large images), it very often freezes for several seconds (3-4 seconds but sometime up to 15-20 seconds) while the page is loading, leaving me with no choice but waiting and waiting before i can do anything else (such as opening an other page in another window for example). This is extremely annoying. And once the page is loaded, scrolling is often not that smooth when large images are on the page. I'd love to have a browser that's fast and always responsive without any freezing and with smooth scrolling no matter what the page looks like.
Note that i noticed a different but equally annoying behaviour in OSS the few times i used it: far too often, when i was loading a web page, it would start rendering it then, suddently, the page would go blank and it would start rendering it from scratch again. Very frustrating from the end-user point of view as it looks like it's loading the page twice. This reminds me of Netscape 4 which constantly got on my nerves by always doing this (which eventually made me switch to Internet Explorer which didn't have this behaviour; I know it's silly but i just couldn't stand these page loading twice anymore).
Last detail that annoyed me a lot the few times i tried OSS: the home page and access points. I don't want a homepage. And i want my default access point to be my home wifi access point. Doesn't sound unreasonalbe, does it? Well, OSS won't let me do that. I often switch between SIM cards (2 UK SIMs, 1 french SIM). And whevener i switched SIM cards, OSS would reset the access point to the GPRS access point of the new SIM card and reset the home page to the SIM card home page. And if there was no home page on the SIM card, it would keep asking me if i wanted to define a home page. Even when i said no, it would ask me again and again and again whenever i launched it. I DON'T WANT NO HOME PAGE! So let me be ;-) And let the access point settings alone please.
And of course, one thing that neither OSS nor Opera Mobile does and that is absolutely essential (but i'm sure you've already heard that one hundreds of thousands of times): copy text and select phone number from web pages.
Well, that's it for now i guess. Looking forward to see what how OSS is going to evolve. Good luck to you guys.
Posted by: Vioccc | November 2, 2006 05:48 AMPage up / Page down keyboard shortcut would be wonderful. 60% of my time in the browser is used to read my rss feeds via bloglines. Using the joystick to to scroll through the headlines is a pain.
Thanks!
