Nokia Messaging Report of the Week: Who Makes “Email” Phones?

S60 Ambassadors - January 8th, 2009 - Written by Daniel Shugrue

We’re a bit behind on showing our Messaging Reports of the Week. Here’s one from Christmas week that fell through the cracks, from adityasinghvi:

A couple of days ago, I had gone to a friend’s house and was just chatting up with him, when his dad came in and asked him which Blackberry to buy as he wanted an ‘email’ phone.
My friend looked at me and smiled, he told his dad that I could be of better help as I was more informed a source and also an S60 Ambassador.
I told him what the S60 Ambassador initiative was. Then quickly got down to business, of asking him why he needed an ‘email’ phone. He said he needed access to his mailbox(es) on the fly. Also it was only the Blackberry which allowed him that functionality (his perception).
I politely corrected him and told him that this service was offered by other phones and/or services too. I told him that Nokia also offered this functionality. He was taken aback. I told him about the Nokia Messaging application(NM). and how it could work on a variety of Nokia S60 phones. He said he had seen the E71 in the hands of a few people and really liked it. I quickly added that it would work on that too.
I told him how the NM allowed one to sync 10 mailboxes simultaneously compared to a lesser number on a BB. I showed him how it worked on my trial E63. He had no problems familiarizing himself with the S60 considering he had an E50. I let him play around with my phone and NM and after a while he was convinced. He said that he needed to pick up a new phone and wanted me to setup his account on NM over the weekend. The last I heard, he had purchased the E71.

Thanks adityasinghvi, we’ll send out a loaner E71 for your friend’s dad. Or, if he’s already gotten his own, feel free to lend it to another friend. :-) Hoping to read more reports from you soon.

The report is too biased; Nokia Email is embarassing compared to Blackberry service. That was laughable:-).
I wonder whom these kind of posts are destinated? Nokia top management?:-)

@horia: We aspire to have as many of these reports read by top management as possible. IMO the more we hear direct, from consumers about what they like/don’t like about our products, the better we are able to serve. If you have more specific feedback about what you’d like to see, you can leave it for us directly in Ambassador reports.

    @Daniel.
Of course I have noticed your good intentions, as I am a fervent reader of S60 blogs.
I was laughing because this “report” is plain stupid and shameless. Everybody knows that Blackberry service is the world’s best email service. Nokia wasn’t capable to release a decent HTML enabled email app in years.
Sorry, I thought this blog space was made for funny and brilliant reports. If you can’t find decent ones, let the classic marketing do its job:-).
    All the best!

@ horia. HTML email has always been a part of the original built in email client found on all S60 devices. Every email you get comes with an attachment. Open that attachment and you’ll find the .html file that is created. It will allow you to view the email in full html.

Like I said, that is with the original email application, built into all S60 devices.

In this new Nokia Messaging application, HTML is coming soon according the developer Davis Fields, head of the project…

“I want to acknowledge specifically the omission of HTML in this release – we have spent plenty of time figuring out the best way to implement HTML and we are close to delivering it, but not in this release. It’s an important feature to us.”

It’s feedback like yours and everyone’s that helps to improve the applications.

Come on, you don’t really want to use that HTML attachment as an escuse for the lack of HTML email support (as in directly available to the users, not a weird attachment to open). It would be better to simply claim that Nokia doesn’t like it because … See “Why HTML in E-Mail is a Bad Idea” at http://www.birdhouse.org/etc/evilmail.html
