Forum Nokia just released the Web Runtime (WRT) plug-in for Aptana Studio, the first tool for creating and deploying Web Runtime widgets for your S60 phone. You can download Aptana Studio and the plug-in from Forum Nokia, and find out more about Aptana and their support for WRT widgets on the Aptana Web site.

The Aptana folks also created a video tutorial that shows you how to install and use this useful new tool. The initial reactions are very positive, and we’re looking forward to seeing plenty of new and creative widgets as a result of this release.

The Aptana plug-in is only the beginning of the WRT tools story. Michael Bierman, product manager for the WRT tools team, has this to say about where they go from here:

Our strategy for WRT tools lays the foundation for attracting a wide range of web designers and developers who can create rich internet applications for Nokia devices around the world. We will work with the integrated development environments that developers already know and love to eliminate the time and cost of ramp-up on tools which can be barriers to platform adoption.

The initial reactions to the new tool have been very positive. One developer wrote “this plugin is awesome in every way….it has made development and testing of widgets so much easier.” I’ve even used it myself on a widget project I’m working on, and have been very impressed by how Aptana and the WRT plug-in work together.

Best wishes for a happy and productive 2009!

So… I am reading a lot of upgrades to game, widget support, touch, & video but what about your core? I currently own an E90 and have for a long time. The only thing that is rock solid is the hardware. The software/OS lacks functionality. I moved from the palm OS because they started making their own phones. Palm phones are underpowered. I moved to the E90 because it was supposed to be optimized for efficiency and productivity. It was supposed to be the definition of what business minded people wanted. My calendar has 1/10th the functionality the Palm OS has or had 8+ years ago. Please pick up a palm and learn from what options they allow for. I will not buy another S60 OS product until there are more options for core applications. However, you could be right. Widget capability/creation maybe the only way people get what they really want.

I haven’t posted about this before and I really don’t know where it’s proper to post this. This was supposed to be more informative than just me complaining. This is just from frustration. I have a device, I can’t upgrade, has many limits, and wish I could use more.
